Happenings at the Guild
The Northfield Arts Guild Theater is pleased to announce the musical Chicago, to be performed February 12-28, 2010! Fabulous dancing, one show-stopping-song after another, and a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz: all this makes Chicago a show you won't want to miss. From the world of the "Roaring Twenties" comes the story of Roxie Hart, an aspiring performer who shoots her lover and tries to get her husband to take the rap for it. While in jail, Mrs. Hart meets a variety of murderesses on death row, including the famous Velma Kelly. Roxy and Velma vie for the spotlight and the headlines until they are finally joined as a duo in their pursuit of fame, fortune, and acquittal.
Chicago is directed by Julianna Skluzacek, an accomplished director who has staged multiple productions in Faribault and Owatonna. The musical director for this production is Matt Nielsen and the choreographer is Mary Hahn. The cast includes Adam Andreasen, Christina Berget, Elizabeth Braaten Palmieri, Garrick Dietze, Matt Drenth, Jessica Ekeren, Kevin Ely, Tom Ett, Ann Etter, Jane Fenton, Libby Glimsdal, Mary Hahn, Bryanna Hanson, Nathan Kuhlman, Steve Lawler, Paul McGuire, Myrna Mibus, Michelle Olsen, Raelene Ostberg, Melody Pringle, Teresa Schier, Christina Schwietz, Paul Seguin, Shari Setchell, and Jaci Smith.
Tickets for Chicago are $15, and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets are available online here or by contacting the Northfield Arts Guild by phone at 507-645-8877.

You can see a long way from the Arts Guild Gallery during the current exhibit: it's full of landscapes. The two artists featured in the main gallery are Becky Jokela of Cannon Falls and Douglas House of Eagan. Stop in and leave the snow behind for a bit while you visit some fields of flowers, moody sunsets and autumn panoramas of color. Nerstand artist Kirsten Johnson is exhibiting in The Other Room, and her work, also landscape inspired, really gives the gallery three views of nature. The image shown here is a work by Jokela titled Yesterday's Storm
The exhibit will be on display through February 6.
For fifty years, the Northfield Arts Guild has "brought people together for the sake of creating something together," writes local dancer and artist Brian Sostek.
Brian is one of the Voices from the Northfield Arts Guild, portrayed by photographer Craig Perman on the website in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Northfield Arts Guild. Fifty works of art by fifty local artists have been on display in Northfield. Other celebratory events have included the Danse Macabre in October and the upcoming Beaux Arts Ball on December 19 featuring original performances (including Elizabeth Alexander, Chris Brunelle, Don Forsberg, Jerry Fox, Christina Schweitz, Peter Webb, Northfield Youth Choir and more) and art by local artists.
As part of the 50th Anniversary celebration, the Arts Guild will be highlighting our local writers with a Writers' Night on February 25th.
We invite you to be a part of this program by creating poetry, fiction, or prose on the theme of Fifty, in honor of five decades that the Northfield Arts Guild has supported the arts and artists in our community.
Submit a maximum of 3 poems and/or 2 fiction and nonfiction writings. Fiction and nonfiction prose should be no longer than 1500 words each. We reserve the right to choose which of your pieces will be a part of the program.
Deadline to submit writing to be included in the program is Friday, February 5. Submit writing by e-mail to Sheryl at the Arts Guild office or mail to Northfield Arts Guild, 304 Division St, Northfield, MN 55057.
