We are excited to present this summer education programming, but it is dependent on arriving at a moment where gatherings of various sizes are deemed safe by the CDC, Minnesota Department of Health and you. Classes taking place are also dependent on enrollment – so please register! If for any reason classes cannot take place as scheduled, we will work with you to offer an online option, reschedule the program or refund you in full.

Gadgets and Gizmos… how would a third grader interpret this theme? How about a ninth grader? Tune in at 2 p.m. this Friday, June 26 for the online Young People’s Theater Workshop performance to find out!

The performance will be a series of original, prerecorded plays from the virtual pioneers of YPTW session I, who have used “Gadgets and Gizmos” to guide their play creation. Each new play will become available to view on YouTube every 15 minutes beginning at 2 p.m. – like a live production! Check back in here, on our Facebook or YouTube page Friday to enjoy the performance.

With the smashing success of virtual session I, we’re pleased to share that session II of Young People’s Theater Workshop will be held online! Our instructors and directors have worked hard to make a plan for students to still get a YPTW experience, but in a safe and healthy way. Virtual YPTW session II will have flexible times and pricing. We hope you’ll take advantage of this unique opportunity to still create theater over the summer. And yes, there will still be a t-shirt.

Participants will receive details and Zoom links a few days prior to the start of YPTW session II.

The dates for session II are July 13-31 with a final performance on the last day of class. Here is the general schedule.

9:15-9:45 a.m. – Morning Meeting
Start your morning the YPTW way! All staff and participants will come together for a word of encouragement, some movement and maybe even a theater game or two.

10-10:45 a.m. – Breakout Class I
Each week, you’ll have a variety of breakout classes to choose from throughout the day – everything from movement to improv to accents!

11-11:45 a.m. – Breakout Class II
Keep the day rolling with a new breakout class.

1-1:45 p.m. – Breakout Class III
Come back from lunch to try something new with the third breakout class of the day.

2-2:45 p.m. – Play Creation
Break into small groups by age to create an original play with your directors.

We know that a virtual YPTW is a different experience for students so we are heavily discounting the program and providing two tracks to fit the individual needs of your family and student.

Young People’s Theater Workshop (often referred to as YPTW) is in its 30th year of educational theater programming. YPTW offers experiences in creative drama and performance. Starting with a given theme, each age group works with a director to create, rehearse and perform an original script. These unique scripts meld together for a fun and exceptional show. Most mornings, students also attend theater arts and dance classes. Past Young People’s Theater Workshops have included such themes as Making Waves, Something Wicked this Way Comes, Passages and Break Down the Wall(s). The Young People’s Theater Workshop culminates with performances for the public. YPTW is a tuition based educational theater program.

YPTW is open to students entering grades 3-12. Students are placed in groups up to 14 students according to their age. All students come together for morning and end-of-day meetings.

Who will be working with the students? Bob Gregory-Bjorklund and Beth Breiland manage and lead the program when it’s in-person. YPTW staff includes theater artists, classroom teachers and highly-qualified theater majors.
