Set during the 1980’s British miners’ strike, motherless, working-class Billy Elliot dreams of being a professional ballet dancer. However, his father and brother want nothing to do with the so-called “nonmasculine” art of dance, and Billy’s teacher resolves to give Billy secret dance lessons so that he can audition for the Royal Ballet school. The winner of 14 Tony, Olivier, and Drama Desk awards, including Best Musical, Book, and Original score, Billy Elliot is an exploration of how we can find our place and passions in an unbalanced world. The empowering music is by Elton John, with book and lyrics by Lee Hall, who wrote the original film screenplay of the same name.
