A celebration of the rich choral traditions of our region
The Northfield Arts Guild will host the Choral Arts Ensemble of Rochester, Minnesota for a Choir Country concert on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at 3:00 pm. This celebration of rich choral traditions will be held at St. John’s Hall, 500 Third Street West, Northfield.
Choir Country is a celebration of Minnesota’s finest composers and the deep roots of exceptional choral singing in our region. Minnesota has a tradition of top-quality choral performance and choral composition. Building on the foundations laid by F. Melius Christiansen, Dominick Argento, Stephen Paulus, Libby Larsen and many others, a richly talented and diverse body of contemporary Minnesota-based composers are creating beautiful new music for choirs. The Choir Country concert features works by thirteen of these vibrant and eloquent composers – including video clips of the composers talking about their craft. Minnesota Public Radio classical music host Steve Staruch conducted the video interviews.
Now entering its 33rd season, Choral Arts Ensemble is an auditioned choir founded by Rick Kvam. Its volunteer members are from Rochester and throughout Southeast Minnesota. Seasonal repertoire includes a cappella works from the Renaissance to the present day, in addition to a variety of choral/orchestral works. Since 1996 Choral Arts Ensemble has commissioned and premiered more than fifty new choral works. Its catalog of fifteen CDs includes Minnesota Voices and Hail, Minnesota! – both featuring works by Minnesota composers.
The Northfield Arts Guild aims to showcase the arts of our region across the spectrum of artistic disciplines. The Guild is pleased to host the Choral Arts Ensemble’s performance in Northfield.
Tickets for Choir Country are $15 for adults and $10.00 for seniors & students. Tickets are available online at northfieldartsguild.org, by calling 507.645.8877, or at the Guild’s Center for the Arts, 304 Division Street South, Northfield.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
