At the Northfield Arts Guild, we offer a diverse range of visual art classes to inspire creativity and enhance skills for all levels, for which you can pre-register. Whether you are exploring the world of ceramics, figure drawing, canvas making, or painting in our guided sessions or enjoying the freedom to create in our open studio sessions, we provide the space, equipment, and guidance to support your artistic journey. There are classes for everyone at any level of experience and age!

Color and Composition Through Collage: A Series
April 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th
Explore the expressive power of color through hands-on collage and mixed-media techniques. You will investigate color relationships, balance, contrast, and visual rhythm while learning the fundamentals of composition. Using painted papers, found images, and a variety of textured materials, participants will experiment with layering, cutting, and assembling to create dynamic, original artworks.

Around the Samovar: Insights into Folk Embroidery of the Slavic World
Saturday May 2nd, 9:00AM-12:00PM
Spanning from the Caspian Sea to the Carpathian Mountains, the Slavic world has a rich and dynamic history of craft embroidery practices, folk dress traditions, and creative rituals. Participants in this introductory course will have an opportunity to learn about some of the regional designs and histories of Slavic folk embroidery, experience a traditional Slavic tea service, and examine vibrant antique and archival textile samples of Slavic folk costumes. The tactile element of this course includes instruction in the basic-intermediate cross stitch technique fundamental to traditional Slavic embroidery. Participants will be provided with all craft material necessary to enjoy the lesson (e.g. canvas materials, needles, threads, printed take-home instructions, and full-color pattern).

Mosaic Workshop

Join Artist Michael Sweere for a free all-day mosaic workshop! Michael has been chosen to design and construct the mural going in the new Northfield Ice Arena. Participants will spend the morning learning the differences in types of tile, mosaic materials, adhesives, and tools. After a hour lunch break, participants will come back and spend the the afternoon working on the actual mosaic mural that will eventually be installed in the new ice arena. Each class is meant as a single session.

Spoon Carving Workshop
Saturday, May 9th and 16th – 2:00PM-4:00PM
Over two sessions, students will learn how to carve a wooden spoon. Each student will finish the class with a handmade wooden spoon of their own design and making. The class will use spoon carving as a framework to learn the basics of woodcarving, including wood’s material properties, carving and gouging techniques, finishing, knife/gouge sharpening, and safe working practices. The class will examine functional carving traditions around the world, and the spectrum from highly decorative to highly functional carving. Woodcarving is the most budget-friendly and storage-friendly form of woodworking, great for working in a small space (like an apartment) or outdoors. It’s an easy-to-start practice, and can be either social or highly meditative.
