SUMMARY:Centered Mindfulness exhibition opens
DESCRIPTION:CENTERED MINDFULNESS\nJULY 23– AUG 29\, 2020\n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition features installation works by six regional artists Marilyn Larson\, Tim Lloyd\, John Saurer\, Jan Shoger\, Elizabeth Simonson and Michon Weeks. Each artist has developed a specific visual language that aims to shift viewers’ perspective toward a more meditative view of the world\, either through repetitive forms\, mathematical theories\, grid systems or circular structures. \n  \nWatch a recording of the Virtual Reception that was held on August 6\, 2020 to celebrate the artists. See a slideshow of artwork and hear remarks from the featured artists followed by an artist Q & A portion. \n\n\n\n\n\nSEE EXHIBITION VIDEOS AND PHOTOS\n\n\n\n\n\nFEATURED ARTISTS:\nMarilyn Larson \n\n \n\nMarilyn Larson is a Minneapolis-based artist\, ceremonialist\, and labyrinth maker. Since 1996 she has been building contemplative labyrinths for wall\, floor and outdoors. Labyrinths have been found worldwide over the past 5\,000 years. Patterns found in nature are reflected in walkable art called labyrinths. A labyrinth is an enclosed meandering path that leads into a center and out again. A sacred space is created each time we trace the form of a labyrinth with eyes\, fingers\, or feet.  A labyrinth is also a mirror and a listening device. Intentions set upon entering the image invite response. Wherever found\, labyrinths continue to offer an opportunity to experience a pace that can bring inner peace. Like the meandering movement of a river that revitalizes water\, the ever-turning\, rhythmical walk of a labyrinth calls forth clarity. \n\n\n\nTim Lloyd \n\n \n\nTim Lloyd is a Northfield artist whose ideas come from nature\, and whose work has always made reference to some aspect of the natural world. \nBoreal Studies\, a series.\nDrawing for me has always been a way to get into the mind of an artist. Without the intent of making a work of art the direct activity putting marks on a surface gets close to the thinking of a person. It’s something like what I like to say “picking the brain of another human”.This series of drawings of trees from an area of Minnesota’s Arrowhead gives this group of graphite drawings “ a sense of place” not only of boreal species\, that of old growth White Pine\, White Spruce\, and Balsam Fir\, but of my intent to describe the trees. I hope too that they also give a glimpse of my thought process. I love graphite as a tool for mark making\, for me its’ spontaneity conveys how I’m mindful as I draw. \n\nJohn Saurer \n\n\n \n\nI created this monoprint series of over 100 impressions of simple objects collected at my feet\, off the ground (natural and man-made\, beautiful and ugly). I am intrigued by the “multiple” and the potential to construct a larger composition from a single print matrix and the “ghosts” of previous impressions as the series moves forward. \nMy artwork is a metaphor for order: sometimes re-expressing order found in the landscape\, a mechanical process\, the rhythm of form\, personal relationships\, and the life around me. Each work is often a collaboration of many independent parts that are crafted to come together and express a larger whole. \n\n\n\nJan Shoger \n\n \n\nMy sketchbooks are chock full of drawings of natural phenomena: logs caught in a stream\, bird’s nests\, cells magnified 2500 times by the scanning electron microscope\, rock formations\, trees hanging tenaciously to nearly bare rock\, great blue herons\, twisted thistles\, driftwood fragments\, seeds picked up on a walk\, shells found at ocean’s edge\, organic shadows from plants\, striated stones or weathered bones. \nShadows\nWintry\, distorted shadows of tree\, shrubs\, grasses\,\nFall across the white undulations on the hill behind the house\nThe mind focuses\, empties of all thoughts\nWhat I see\, feel\, at this moment is all that matters\nTotally caught up\, charcoal marks are made\, responding to what I see\, what I take in\nHand and eye movements merge\nSpontaneous\, meditative\, gestures quickly mark the paper. \n\nElizabeth Simonson \n\n\n \n\n My work is structured through the creation of repetitive systems. Where better can this order be found than in the building blocks of life? From simple molecular structures to complex organisms\, life grows blindly\, motivated by creating self sustaining structures that foster survival. I see my work as an aspect of nature. \nIt was not my intention to create system-based art\, but I feel that abstraction and the use of logic\, systems and patterns is a powerful language\, and it is important to me that the viewer has an accessible path to share in my exploration of it. I use common everyday materials like tape\, wire\, beads\, tiles\, fishing line\, office supplies or anything that comes in multiples as my inspiration. One pattern may involve covering from ceiling to floor\, a wall or room with consecutive rows of tape. Each successive layer conforms to the imperfections of the previous row where by a subtle crease evolves into a voluminous shape. The enormous task of both building and attaching the units underscores the complex relationship between a rigid and fixed system with the limitations of the material and the maker. \n\n\nMichon Weeks \n \n\nDrawings: Airplane\, Boombox\, Car\nAs an artist\, I work to see as concretely as possible what my mind can think and imagine. Inspiration can come from anything and anywhere: things\, thoughts\, memories\, sensations\, etc. My collection of subjects for this group of drawings came from direct conversations with my choir mates at St. Peter’s in Northfield\, MN. I asked my fellow singers questions about themselves. What is important to you? How do you spend your time? What are your prized possessions? Often\, their answers yielded specific objects–a sewing machine\, a stocking cap\, an airplane\, a ring\, etc. I draw to see a materialized view of each object distilled through my ink\, tools\, hands\, brain\, senses\, heart\, and gut. I made many of the drawings within a grid of lines or dots. The grid provides a field where I can find imagery and avoid dishonest marks. Blocky-shaped objectsalong with my mistakes\, edits\, and dabs of unpolished doubt are unconcealed in the drawings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEXHIBITION CATALOG

SUMMARY:FREE Workshop: Writing as Excavation
DESCRIPTION:The Northfield Arts Guild hosts…\nWriting as Excavation\nTHIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL! To be added to the wait list\, please email Megan Proft at megan@northfieldartsguild.org . \nIn this free\, immersive workshop\, you’ll use generative exercises to unearth the stories within us that are awaiting disclosure and discovery. Exploring new imaginative terrain can be intimidating. Yet it is the writer’s task to peel back layers\, pursue deeper truths\, and see past the surface of the familiar. Using writing prompts that operate as invitations\, you’ll excavate past creative blocks\, find permission to articulate interior worlds\, and locate the heart of our stories in order to bring them to life. \n Please bring to class the following items:  \n\nSomething to write with or on: notebook\, pen\, laptop.\nA spirit of creativity\, a sense of openness\, and a willingness to explore new depths in your writing.\n\n The workshop will be guided in its work by the words of Gaston Bachelard: “When it comes to excavated ground\, dreams have no limit.” \n  \nThis workshop is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Although free of charge for all participants\, donations ($10 suggested) are welcome and gratefully received. \n About Lara Palmqvist\n \nLara Palmqvist is the recipient of a 2019 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant and a 2019 Elizabeth George Foundation grant for emerging writers. She was a 2017-2018 Fiction Fellow in the Loft Literary Center Mentor Series. Her writing appears in platforms such as The Washington Post and Ploughshares.com\, and has additionally been honored with awards from the Kimmel-Harding-Nelson Center for the Arts\, Ox-Bow School of Art\, Marble House Project\, the Saari Residence in Finland\, the Sozopol Fiction Seminars in Bulgaria\, the Jerome Foundation\, the Kone Foundation\, and the U.S. Fulbright Commission\, through which she taught creative writing at the Ivan Franko National University and Chernivtsi National University in Ukraine. Learn more at www.larapalmqvist.com.

SUMMARY:FREE Workshop: Dance That Makes Music
DESCRIPTION:The Northfield Arts Guild hosts the Flying Foot Forum Workshop…\nDance That Makes Music\nIn this hands-on workshop\, students learn to stomp\, clap\, hit\, shout\, sing and slap\, making music while dancing\, by dancing. The class\, led by Joe Chvala\, begins with improvisations and exercises that teach some of the methods the Flying Foot Forum uses to create their dances. By the end of the workshop students have created a group percussive dance piece that is partly choreographed by the company and partly created by each of the members in the workshop. This is the ultimate Flying Foot Forum workshop. Dancers should wear comfortable clothes and hard soled shoes\, if possible. Ages 8 to adult. \nThis is a free workshop but registration is required! Please email Megan Proft at megan@northfieldartsguild.org by Oct. 22 to register. \nAbout Joe Chvala and Flying Foot Forum\nJoe Chvala has spent most of his adult life based in New York City\, Gothenburg\, Sweden\, and since 1990 Minneapolis. During this time he has worked as a director\, choreographer\, writer\, composer\, performer\, and teacher for opera companies\, experimental and nonexperimental theatres\, concert dance venues\, performing arts academies\, and universities. \nHis work\, noted for its breadth and its singular brand of creativity\, is inspired and informed by his unique combination of artistic skills and experiences. The range of his work has earned him such diverse titles as “Fred Astaire on acid” and “the Agnes Deville of tap.” \nAfter moving to the Twin Cities in 1990\, Joe worked with a variety of theater companies while developing his own choreographic dance/theater work for his company of percussive dancers\, the Flying Foot Forum. Since the premiere of their first full concert (May ’93)\, the Flying Foot Forum has been presented in a variety of venues around the world from Paris to New York City\, Jacob’s Pillow to England. \nJoe has received numerous choreographic and interdisciplinary fellowships and grants from such organizations as the National Endowment for the Arts\, The National Dance Project\, the Minnesota State Arts Board\, the Bush Foundation\, The McKnight Foundation\, The Jerome Foundation\, Intermedia Arts Minnesota and the Minnesota Dance Alliance\, as well as Ivey and Sage Awards for dance and theater. flyingfootforum.com

The star arrives late and\, through a hilarious series of mishaps\, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant\, Max\, believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening\, Saunders persuades Max to get into Morelli’s Pagliacci costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably\, but Morelli comes to and gets into his other costume\, ready to perform. Now two Pagliaccis are running around in costume and two women are head over heels\, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. A sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End\, this madcap\, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter. \nCharacters \n\nHenry Saunders – The Cleveland Grand Opera’s general manager. Father to Maggie. A blowhard who often loses his temper at the slightest mishap.\nMax – Saunders’ long-suffering assistant\, who is forced to take Tito’s place.\nMaggie Saunders – Saunders’ daughter\, and Max’s girlfriend; she has great admiration for Tito.\nTito Merelli – The world’s most renowned opera tenor\, and notorious ladies man.\nMaria – Tito’s long-suffering wife\, with an “Italian temper”. A seductive woman (and she knows it).\nJulia – Chairwoman of the Cleveland Opera Guild\, who considers herself a “grande dame.”\nThe Bellhop – A comic relief character who has an ongoing feud with Saunders. An obnoxious opera fan\, the Bellhop keeps showing up at the hotel suite at the wrong moment\, trying to get an autograph and a photo of Tito Merelli.\n\nActors will be asked to read in pairs and trios from the script which will be emailed ahead of time when an audition slot is confirmed. Memorization is not required. \nAny men interested in the roles of Max\, Tito Merelli\, or the Bellhop should also prepare a short operatic piece to sing a capella (any song sung operatically – if it’s Hotel California operatically\, that’s great!) \nTo sign-up for a half hour audition slot\, please email Performing Arts Manager Jared Zeigler at jared@northfieldartsguild.org \nQuestions can also be sent there. We look forward to seeing you!

SUMMARY:Reception for Krisi Lillie: Tiny Impressions
DESCRIPTION:Krisi Lillie: Tiny Impressions\nAugust 1 – August 31\, 2019\n \nIn the Guild Members Gallery. This exhibition features oil paintings by Krisi Lillie which explore the landscape of Southern Minnesota. \nArtist Statement:\nTiny Impressions reflects my interpretation of the natural beauty that surrounds us\, providing endless compositions to paint. I am especially intrigued by the moods of the clouds. My primary focus is to portray nature in a whimsical\, semi-abstract fashion as opposed to a more literal depiction. I reach this goal by selecting a creative color palette which I apply with a painting knife to generate movement\, texture\, and a modicum of whimsy. \n\nPlease join us for an Artist Reception on Friday\, August 2\, from 7 – 9 pm.  Refreshments will be served. \n  \n2018-19 Gallery Season sponsored by: \n\n\n\nTiny Impressions supported by:

SUMMARY:"Baggage" Capstone Event
DESCRIPTION:Baggage: Immigrants\n\nby Isabella Rose\nAugust 1-31\, 2019\nIsabella Rose’s solo exhibition is a snapshot of her long-term project featuring mixed media collages inside suitcases interpreting personal interviews. This series features the life stories of three immigrants. She received a SEMAC Emerging Artist grant for this project. \nSEMAC Capstone Event: Friday August 2\, 6:30 pm \n  \nRose’s art explores what makes people who they are\, the parts we hide and the parts we share. The parts of people that seem inconsequential interest her\, the parts that are not perfect or pretty\, but add up to make them whole. Through her art she wants to share these facets of people unprocessed and raw. Her desire is to create unease by revealing the beauty in the imperfect and broken. She hopes this unease leads to reflection\, connection\, and empathy. \nIsabella Rose was born and raised in Northfield\, MN and graduated from the Northfield ALC in 2018. She has worked with numerous Minnesota artists in Northfield and the Twin Cities and currently lives in St Paul. She will be attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the fall. \n  \n\n \n  \n  \n  \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2018-19 Gallery Season sponsored by:
