SUMMARY:The Great Northfield Bank Robbery: A Love Story
DESCRIPTION:September 5\, 6\, and 7\, 2019\na World Premier\nduring Northfield’s Defeat of Jesse James Days\n\n  \nPerformances:\nThursday\, September 5\, 2019 at 7:30pm\nFriday\, September 6\, 2019 at 7:30pm\nSaturday\, September 7\, 2019 at 7:30pm\n \nIn 1900\, Jim and Cole Younger\, brothers from Missouri\, had spent nearly a quarter century in Stillwater penitentiary for the notorious raid on the First National Bank of Northfield. As a movement for their pardon grew\, a young reporter for the St. Paul Pioneer Press took an interest in the Youngers’ cause.  Alix J. Muller\, already distinguished in her journalism career at the tender age of 22\, followed her nose for news and went out to Stillwater to interview Jim Younger.  Alix came back with more than just a good story. She and Jim Younger began a mutual appreciation. After the famous bank robbers and killers were released\, the relationship between Alix and Jim turned into its own story — one that shocked the upper crust of St. Paul. The star-crossed romance between an ambitious young woman of high society and an ex-con more than twice her age is a story that seems like fiction — but it was once actual news. \nHow the play came about:\nBill McAuliffe was digging through files at the Minnesota HIstory Center\, researching some now-forgotten news story\, when he came across accounts of the tragic death of bank robber and killer Jim Younger. Younger had been in love with a St. Paul journalist less than half his age\, but of course it couldn’t work. “That’s a play\,” McAuliffe thought.  “Maybe I’ll write it when I retire.” Twenty-five years later\, on his way out the Star Tribune door on his final day\, McAuliffe stopped by the desk of colleague Graydon Royce\, the paper’s long-time drama and arts critic. Was there a play here\, McAuliffe wondered? As the saying goes\, you couldn’t make this stuff up. There was definitely a play there. And here it is.\n\nThe Playwrights:\nIn his 33 years as a reporter at the Minneapolis Star Tribune\, Bill McAuliffe covered politics\, crime\, weather and other obsessions of the day. He is also an award-winning travel writer and has written a wide range of children’s non fiction books. He is a bicyclist\, bread-baker\, undiscovered guitarist and grandfather of four. He lives in Minneapolis. \nGraydon Royce is a retired theater critic and fine arts writer with the Star Tribune. He won the 2016 Ivey Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Twin Cities theater community. He has been a fellow at both the O’Neill Critic’s Institute in New London\, Conn.\, and the NEA Classical Music Fellowship at Columbia University. He is also a playwright and actor. He most recently performed in “Holiday Inn” at Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. Royce currently serves as director of artistic ministry at Diamond Lake Lutheran Church in south Minneapolis. He has four children and eight grandchildren. \nDirected by Rachel Haider\n2018 Best of Southern MN Scene Winner for Best Director\nThroughout most of her life\, Rachel has studied\, taught\, and worked in theater arts and in arts promotion and management. Her extensive resume includes work with professional\, community and educational theaters.  She has taught in private and public schools and with numerous arts organizations. Her most recent directing credits with the Guild include Mansfield Park\, Les Misérables (which won Best Production in 2018) and The King’s New Clothes. Other recent directing credits include The Miracle Worker\, A Christmas Carol\, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever and A Charlie Brown Christmas. Rachel is the Performing Arts Manager at the Guild and directs/teaches/manages Purple Door Youth Theater.  Rachel brings a broad range of arts expertise to her productions\, creating quality and memorable theatrical experiences. \nFeaturing:\nJim Younger: Steve Lawler\nAlix Muller: Alison Haider\nCole Younger: Jonathan Larson\nLenora/Prostitute/Editor: Innana Antley\nGovernor Samuel Van Sant: Brendon Etter\nEdward Schurmeier/Male Guard at Stillwater Prison: Paul Seguin\nRutter/Reporter 1/Schoch: Rolf Kragseth\nSchmitz/Reporter 2: Samuel Temple\nJohnson/Con on a Crutch: Will McIntyre\nWarren Bronaugh/Reporter 3: Andy Franklin\nAdolph Grethen: Bryan Reed\nAid to Van Sant/Female Guard at Stillwater Prison/Panhandler/Ex-con/Landlady/Reporter in Boise: Esme’ Elzi\nBarker/Heckler: Joran Peterson \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany thanks to our Production Co-sponsor:

SUMMARY:The Odyssey
DESCRIPTION:August 2-11\, 2019 \nby Mary Zimmerman\nThese dramatic scenes from Homer’s myth begin with a modern young woman who is struggling to understand Robert Fitzgerald’s translation of The Odyssey. A classical muse appears\, and the young woman becomes the goddess Athena–a tireless advocate for Odysseus in his struggle to get home. With her trademark irreverent and witty twist on classic works\, Zimmerman brings to life the story of Odysseus’s ten-year journey\, depicting his encounters with characters such as the Cyclops\, Poseidon\, Calypso\, the Sirens\, and others. The show is done in “bare bones grandeur” with imagined environments and epic landscapes with creative storytelling. \nDirected by Marc Robinson \n Marc Robinson is a professor of Russian at St. Olaf College who specializes in contemporary Russian theater.  He has directed a number of shows at the Arts Guild over the years including Death of a Salesman\, Dracula\, The Importance of Being Earnest\, his own play\, The Singer Sisters\, and Cabaret. Marc’s interest in Russian physical theater inspiring his work. \nMany thanks to our 2018-19 Theater Season Sponsors:\n  \nThank you to our Production Sponsor:

They’re about as idiosyncratic as anything in the wide world of ‘popular music.’” \n\n Mary’s new album ‘Rifles & Rosary Beads” was named one of NPR’s “Best Albums of 2018.”\n\n\n“…her razor-sharp eye for detail and her commitment to unsentimental self-reflection puts her in a class with greats such as Kris Kristofferson\, John Prine and yes\, Bob Dylan.”   – Los Angeles Times \n“The importance of this effort cannot be overstated.”  -Country Standard Time \n“The album’s honesty and insight into an often overlooked aspect of American democracy – the on-the-ground experiences of soldiers and\, especially\, the aftermath of their time in combat – is a gift in a contemporary moment full of chatter and political rhetoric.”\n-NPR World Cafe \nRead more about Mary Gauthier\n  \n Many Thanks to our 2018-19 411 Concert Series sponsors:\n   \n\n\n\nCo-sponsorship provided In Memory of Jackie Henry\nAdditional support by our Media Sponsor\,\nour Lodging Sponsor and our Beverage Sponsors \n\n        \n\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:A Christmas Story
DESCRIPTION:by Philip Grecian \nDecember 7-9 and December 13-16\, 2018 \nSet in the 1940s this comedy follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother\, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself\, at Higbee’s Department Store. The consistent response?? “You’ll shoot your eye out!” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here\, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking and everything needed to make your holidays hilarious. (This is the play\, not the musical version.) \n\nDirected by Justin Cervantes \nMany thanks to our 2018-19 Theater Season Sponsors:\n  \nThank you to our Production Co-Sponsors!\n

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 6\, 2018 at 7:30 pm\n$25.00\nSOLD OUT\n“the duo’s gorgeous harmonies and ageless sound spell out just the beginning for these brothers.”\n-All Things Considered\, NPR \n“The group is led by Minneapolis-based brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum\, who\, despite different last names\, put their genetically encoded harmonizing skills and reverence for musical history to good use on the collection of energetic toe-tappers and emotionally resonant ballads — which all seem filtered through David Lynch’s surrealist lens. There’s no getting around it: You’re Dreaming is pretty damn dreamy.”  – The Rolling Stone\n“It’s an honest\, unvarnished\, completely engaging style that is clearly retro but in no way musty. Take some rockabilly\, add some melancholy bluesy swoon\, waltz time C&W and peppy folk-pop  and mix with natural\, innocent\, fresh faced vocals that feel as if these guys have been singing together their whole lives…  music guaranteed to make your day better.”  – American Songwriter \nRead more about The Cactus Blossoms\nVenue:  Northfield Arts Guild Theater\n411 Third Street W.\, Northfield\, MN \nWith Opener \nCannon River Currents\nFolk duo Delia Kain and Helen Forsythe play a unique blend of old time and bluegrass music on their fiddles and banjos with sweet vocal harmonies.\n  \n Many Thanks to our 2018-19 411 Concert Series sponsors:\n   \n  \nand to The Cactus Blossom Concert Sponsor:\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Leaves of Grass - Illuminated
DESCRIPTION:SEE THIS SHOW IN NORTHFIELD BEFORE IT PLAYS AT THE GUTHRIE (next summer). \nThe capstone event for Northfield Poetry Festival. \nAdmission is free for this first-come-first-serve non-ticketed event.\nA free will offering will be accepted. \nLeaves of Grass – Illuminated has received rave reviews in Minneapolis and New York City:\n“Both Whitman and Scully are major figures; they contain multitudes.” (Village Voice)\n“Scully is the perfect caretaker for Whitman’s legacy.” (StarTribune)\n“Patrick Scully was born to play Walt Whitman.” (Lavender Magazine)\n\n\n“Leaves of Grass – Illuminated is about history\, art\, and literature – presenting aspects of Walt Whitman’s life and work that are fascinating for our time\, in which discussions of male/male relations have moved out of the shadows into the light of day. The show reveals relationships between men in Whitman’s era\, from Whitman’s utopian vision for male/male relations to the forces that sought to deny them.\nLeaves of Grass – Illuminated  reveals how we got here. I believe there would be no marriage equality in the US today if Whitman hadn’t first written Leaves of Grass in 1855. This show celebrates that\, making historical connections from the past to our present\, and provides sustenance for battles that still remain.  \nThere is a focus in this show on Whitman’s sexuality. It presents him as a complete human being\, as opposed to traditional approaches which erase his sexuality\, denying its importance to his life and to his poetry. Whitman made clear the pressures he faced writing about taboo topics (including\, but not only\, men loving men)\, and the consequences he faced for doing this. This show reflects that. There is nothing in the show that is sexually explicit. This show is appropriate for high school age and above.\nWhitman was a subversive artist\, a radical.”\n-Patrick Scully\n\n\nWhitman wrote:\nDoubtless I could not have perceived the universe\, or written one of my poems\, \nIf I had not freely given myself to comrades\, to love.         \n– Excerpt from Leaves of Grass\n\nFind our more about the show.\n\nFind our more about Patrick Scully.\n\n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
