SUMMARY:Screening: Lady Parts
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Northfield Arts Guild Theater on June 24\, 2017 for a screening of all six episodes of Lady Parts\, a locally created and produced web series. The series was written and directed by Wendy Placko in collaboration with principal castmates. Production was supported by a SEMAC Emerging Artist grant\, which was awarded to Wendy in 2016. \n\n\n\nThe goal of the series is to take on the subject matter of relationships between women: social situations\, friendships\, competition\, belonging\, alienation and more. Characters engage in these topics with a feminist approach\, all in a comedic and satirical tone. \n\n\nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund.

DESCRIPTION:  \nFeaturing:\nPatrick Marschke: 1(a\nJosiah Simon: Sampler\nAndrea Mazzariello: Wake/Rise \nWake/Rise\, an evening of performance\, presents three artists grappling with their physical limits\, technologically extending their bodies with a variety of tools\, musical and otherwise.  \nIn 1(a Patrick Marschke explores improvisational structures tightly integrated with custom built interactive software\, combining the raw and familiar sounds of acoustic drums with micro-samples\, live signal processing\, and synthesized sound. Josiah Simon’s Sampler is a juggling routine\, literally. Andrea Mazzariello’s Wake/Rise works through an awakening in song\, presented through a one-person-band performance on drums\, keys\, voice\, and electronics. \nAlthough this is a free event\, the artists welcome donations in support of immigrants in our community.  \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund.

Created by librettist JIM PAYNE and composer ROBERT ELHAI\, it tells the story of residents of Winesburg\, as they struggle to overcome loneliness and isolation\, and long to create a life of the imagination in a small town in the early 1900s. \n\n The production is directed by Nautilus’ artistic director BEN KRYWOSZ\, and features performers GARY BRIGGLE\, JP FITZGIBBONS\, JOSHUA HINCK\, NORAH LONG\, and ERIC MORRIS\, with musical direction by JERRY RUBINO and JILL DAWE. The production is touring communities throughout Minnesota\, thanks to a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Nautilus commissioned and developed the work\, and has presented semi-staged-workshop productions over the last few years in the Minnesota Fringe Festival.\n\nSherwood Anderson’s novel Winesburg\, Ohio is a series of interconnected short stories\, published in 1919. Seen as a precursor to the great American novelists such as Fitzgerald\, Faulkner\, and Hemingway\, it is widely respected and now considered to be one of the most influential portraits of small-town life in the United States.\n\nHonoring Anderson as their source material\, Payne and Elhai have created an extraordinary trilogy of theatrical portraits. The score is rooted in musical Americana\, including “roots“ orchestration (piano\, violin\, accordion\, and string bass)\, in a vernacular folk style consistent with the characters’ rural culture and psychological state. Gorgeous melodies and expressive harmonies complement lyrics which are both clever and poignant\, creating a masterpiece of musical storytelling that combines the accessibility of musical theater with the emotional scope of American opera.\n\nTWISTED APPLES: STORIES FROM WINESBURG\, OHIO consists of three one-act pieces: Act One is “Answered Prayers”\, which tells of the Reverend Hartmann’s struggle with his sexual attraction to Kate Swift\, the local high school teacher. Kate\, in turn\, is drawn to her former student George Willard\, both  as an intellectual protege and a possible lover. Act Two is “Untold Lies”\, about farmhand Ray Pearson\, whose friendship with a young co-worker re-ignites in Ray his own longing for domestic freedom and youthful aspirations. From their beginnings on the Midwestern festival circuit\, they have reached new heights with each album. The release of 2012’s Stars And Satellites saw the band play to more fans than ever\, sell close to 100\,000 albums\, make their first national television appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman\, and have their first concert feature\, Live at First Avenue\, broadcast on Palladia. This year\, the band will once again headlined Red Rocks Amphitheatre in addition to holding their second annual Festival Palomino in the fall. \nLead songwriter Dave Simonett has been especially affected by change over the last few years. He relocated from Duluth to the city of Minneapolis. “When I lived in Duluth\, I think I took connection with uncivilized nature for granted. There\, I had to drive 20 minutes and I was in the middle of nowhere\, and I did this almost daily\,” says Simonett. “This was a very important ritual for me. Solitary time in a nearly untouched landscape is my version of church\, so I think there is a bit of loss of religion in a lot of my work these days. I’ve always been a little obsessed with our struggle to stay connected to our simple animal side\, the part of our nature that lived off the earth\, hunted live game\, worshipped trees and mountains. I believe a lot of sadness is caused by feeling disconnected with the rest of nature. A lot of what is instinctual for us is beaten down and frowned upon in modern society.
