SUMMARY:Hedwig and the Angry Inch: Feb 15-24
DESCRIPTION:text by John Cameron Mitchell\nmusic and lyrics by Stephen Trask\nAfter a botched sex change operation\, young Hansel Schmidt takes his mother’s name\, marries an American GI\, and moves to America to escape his bleak existence in the shadow of the Berlin Wall. The following year\, living as Hedwig Robinson\, she watches her marriage and the Wall collapse. Living in poverty\, she revisits her love for American pop\, punk\, and glam music\, and meets a new man who she turns into a superstar. But\, when that relationship sours\, Hedwig takes to the stage with her band\, The Angry Inch\, to weigh her future\, realign her past\, and scream her story in ways caustic\, exotic\, and erotic.\n\nHedwig’s life is not your ordinary tale. It’s a half-cocked\, full-schlock\, Soviet-bloc\, hard-knock\, sex-op\, punk-rock musical.  This show is for mature audiences.\nFeaturing Brendon Etter and Shari Setchell \nPerformances:\nThursday\, February 15\, 2018 at 7:30pm\nFriday\, February 16\, 2018 at 7:30pm\nSaturday\, February 17\, 2018 at 7:30pm\nThursday\, February 22\, 2018 at 7:30pm\nFriday\, February 23\, 2018 at 7:30pm\nSaturday\, February 24\, 2018 at 7:30pm \nVenue: Northfield Arts Guild Theater\, 411 Third Street West\, Northfield\n\nTickets: $15.00\nwith special college student pricing of $10 for the Saturday\, February 17 performance ONLY.  This show is for mature audiences.  \na LAB theater series production \n  \nCo-directed and acted by Brendon Etter and Shari Setchell.\nMusic Direction and Keyboard: Jon Madden\nGuitar: Ray Coudret\nBass: Maddie Thies\nDrums:  Ryan Van Gundy \nThank you to our Production Sponsors! \n     \nThank you to our Beverage Sponsors! \n

SUMMARY:Six Mile Grove: 411
DESCRIPTION:Part of our 2017-18 411 Music Concert Series\n\nPerformance: Saturday\, October 14\, 2018 at 7:30 pm \nVenue: Northfield Arts Guild Theater\, 411 Third Street W.\, Northfield \nSix Mile Grove is rooted in the energy of Americana Rock and the simplicity of Classic Country music: all delivered with Farmboy charm. \nTickets:  $25.00 General Admission   \n \n\nIt all started in the small town of Lyle\, MN (pop. 500) with a skid loader and a fence post\, when Six Mile Grove frontman Brandon Sampson was 7 years old. He injured his hand when helping his dad on the family farm. The physician recommended guitar playing for rehabilitation\, and a few weeks later\, Sampson came home from the music store with a new guitar. His younger brother Brian threw a fit\, and was appeased with a shiny drum set. And so the seeds of Six Mile Grove were planted. \nThe brothers spent years pounding away on their instruments in the kitchen of their great grandmother’s old house\, as well as singing in church with their mom\, an organist and devoted music lover. Soon Brian’s friend Barry\, from across the woods\, wanted to join the noise\, and so his years of piano lessons began paying off. The boys realized they would need a bass player\, put an ad in the paper\, and dug up Dezi Wallace from the “big city” of Austin\, MN\, who arrived courtesy of his mom\, as he did not yet have a driver’s license. \nFast forward 20 years\, and Six Mile Grove has a lot to be proud of. They have weathered the ever changing music scene as a primarily self-managed\, self-produced\, and self-recorded band. Their music has evolved accordingly\, as an organic\, honest voice that has not been tinkered with or tainted by the lure of record labels or flashy music producers. You’re sure to find influences of Minnesota music’s founding fathers; from Bob Dylan to the Jayhawks.  Six Mile Grove honors it’s roots\, but has also managed to forge it’s own sound and space on a stage without compromise.  In addition\, their friendship\, touring and recording with legendary Johnny Cash guitarist Bob Wootton\, has lended even more distinctly to their “good all-American boy” sound and style. \nSix Mile Grove is releasing it’s seventh album this Summer 2017.  In this album\, Sampson muses on the responsibilities of providing for a family\, keeping love alive\, and fighting for what’s right in the world. These themes resonate with all the members of the band\, as guys with day jobs\, wives and kids. You’ll hear the whines and growls in Nelson’s piano and lead guitar licks; the take-it-easy pace of Wallace’s bass\, the newly added color of John Wheeler’s steel guitar and the simple to furious tempos in Brian Sampson’s drums.\nAs Wootton states\, “There’s nothing fancy about them and they don’t try to be something they’re not. And that’s what I like about them.”

Cordoba\, Spain)\nAt the early age of 12 years old\, guitarist Angel Ruiz González began his journey learning guitar into the world of Flamenco\, under the study of Phillipe Donnier and Rafael Rodriguez “Merengue de Córdoba”.  At the age of 18 years old\, he starts his professional career in the Tablao “El Cardenal” and Tablao “La Buleria” (Cordoba\, Spain) and performing in a few Flamenco festivals.  He won the first price in a guitarist competition called “Jóvenes Flamencos” de Córdoba.  After he moved to Seville\, he joined the Compañía Andaluza de Danza under the direction of Antonio Gades and José Antonio Ruiz\, performing in many national and international productions.  He participated in “Encuentros/“Bodas de Sangre”\, under the musical direction of Juan \nRequena and José Antonio Ruiz\, in Teatro La Maestranza in Seville.  The artist has also worked in 2004 Flamenco festival held in the USA. Marseille\, France)\nJosé Cortés Fernández was born in the south of France in 1974 from an important gypsy family from Almería. At the age of ten\, Jose began his career in Jerez de la Frontera where he won the “premio del joven aficionado del cante flamenco\,” accompanied on guitar by Terremoto hijo. \nHe was immersed in the world of flamenco with the greatest artists\, such as Terremoto\, Pansequito\, Camarón de la Isla\, Moraito Chico and Tomatito. Since then\, he has shared the stage with the best artists\, including Belen Lopez\, Alfonso Losa\, Sergio Arranda\, Juan Ogalla\, María del Mar Moreno\, Antonio de la Malena\, Manuel de la Malena\, Mara Martinez\, Andrés Peña\, Pilar Ortega\,  Juan Carnona\, David Paniagua\, Juaniare\, Niñp de Los Reyes and Carmen Ledesma.  He has sung for the workshops of Israel Galván\, Angelita Gómez and Javier Latorre. \nIn 2010\, he moved to the United States and now works with many amazing artists such as Jason McGuire\, Yaelisa “Camino Flamencos”\, Carola Zertuche “Teatro Flamenco”\, Melissa Cruz\, and Cristina Hall.  Recently\, Jose was invited to be Antonio Carmona (Ketama)’s backup singer at the Nokia Theater for the Eva Longoria’s Foundation.  In 2014\, Jose had the honor to sing for the San Francisco Opera in “Giselle”.  Since 2014\, Jose has worked with the Aspen Ballet Juan Siddi Company with whom he toured in Hawaii and New Mexico\, and had the honor to perform at the Joyce Theater in New York City last Spring. \nAn incredible and traditional artist\, José Cortés Fernández surprises us now by taking a step forward in his conception of flamenco by making pure flamenco live alongside other genres. \n \n\n\n\n\nManuel Gutierrez Flamenco at El Cid restaurant los Angeles\n\n\n\n  \n\nLuis de La Tota (Palmero / hand-percussionist. Jerez de la Frontera\, Spain)\nBorn into one of the oldest Gypsy neighborhoods of Jerez de La Frontera\, El Barrio de Santiago\, on Flamenco’s most famous street\, La Calle Nueva\, Jose Luis Bermudez Peña aka Luis de La Tota\, takes his artistic name from his grandmother ‘La Tota’\, who has been an inspiration to him since his infancy. Luis carries with him a distinct humor\, grace\, and rhythmic charisma that started his career as a percussionist and festero at the tender age of 8. Where others spend decades studying and crafting their artistry\, Luis simply IS purity in the form of Flamenco. His proof is in his presence on stage and in person where he creates at the moment\, in every moment\, music that will have you laughing to tears or eyes tearing up until you smile once you have discovered that you could lose yourself inside the world of Luis de La Tota. \nAs a percussionist and palmero\, Luis currently tours with flamenco’s top artists such as Maria Del Mar Moreno\, Antonio Del Pipa\, Fernando de La Morena\, El Capullo\, and Diego Carrasco. He is the only holder of a license to teach flamenco rhythms given by the Flamenco Foundation of Spain in 1990. He is also the ‘official’ percussionist for Viernes Flamencos (Flamenco Fridays) in Jerez de la Frontera\, Spain.  As a Flamenco lyricist\, his verses (letras) have been sought after recorded by respected Spanish singers such as Antonio de la Malena (Album: Yo soy Asi\, Asi Soy Yo\, 1997). His work as a percussionist can be heard on CD’s such as Duende y Compas and Gitanos de Jerez to name a few. He currently lives in Boise Idaho where he is building a school\, Escuela de Ritmo that is dedicated to the art of Flamenco rhythms\, dance\, and guitar. In 2013\, Luis gathered his family members to perform as Familia Bermudez at the prestigious Switzerland festival\, Obwald Festival. He and Familia Bermudez were invited to return to Obwald Festival in 2015 where they filmed a documentary about Luis’s talented family. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nFiesta por Bulerias en El Sol\, La Sal\, El Son\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThere will be another performance at Icehouse MPLS in Minneapolis on Sunday October 8 at 6:30 pm.  For more information about the performance in Minneapolis\, visithttps://www.icehousempls.com/events/2017/10/8/flamenco-sin-frontera

SUMMARY:Wake/Rise
DESCRIPTION:  \nFeaturing:\nPatrick Marschke: 1(a\nJosiah Simon: Sampler\nAndrea Mazzariello: Wake/Rise \nWake/Rise\, an evening of performance\, presents three artists grappling with their physical limits\, technologically extending their bodies with a variety of tools\, musical and otherwise. \nIn 1(a Patrick Marschke explores improvisational structures tightly integrated with custom built interactive software\, combining the raw and familiar sounds of acoustic drums with micro-samples\, live signal processing\, and synthesized sound. Josiah Simon’s Sampler is a juggling routine\, literally. Andrea Mazzariello’s Wake/Rise works through an awakening in song\, presented through a one-person-band performance on drums\, keys\, voice\, and electronics. \nAlthough this is a free event\, the artists welcome donations in support of immigrants in our community. \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund.

SUMMARY:Twisted Apples
DESCRIPTION:*Members please note: Because this is a special theater event\, member vouchers may not be redeemed for Twisted Apples.* \n \n \nFriday\, March 17 at 7:30pm\nSaturday\, March 18 at 7:30pm\nSunday\, March 19 at 2:00pm\nNorthfield Arts Guild Theater\, 411 Third Street W\, Northfield\n\n\n\nListen to playwright Brendon Etter talk about Twisted Apples on MPR’s Art Hounds! \nTWISTED APPLES: STORIES FROM WINESBURG\, OHIO is a new music-theater piece based on Sherwood Anderson’s classic American novel Winesburg\, Ohio. Created by librettist JIM PAYNE and composer ROBERT ELHAI\, it tells the story of residents of Winesburg\, as they struggle to overcome loneliness and isolation\, and long to create a life of the imagination in a small town in the early 1900s. \n\n The production is directed by Nautilus’ artistic director BEN KRYWOSZ\, and features performers GARY BRIGGLE\, JP FITZGIBBONS\, JOSHUA HINCK\, NORAH LONG\, and ERIC MORRIS\, with musical direction by JERRY RUBINO and JILL DAWE. The production is touring communities throughout Minnesota\, thanks to a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. Nautilus commissioned and developed the work\, and has presented semi-staged-workshop productions over the last few years in the Minnesota Fringe Festival.\n\nSherwood Anderson’s novel Winesburg\, Ohio is a series of interconnected short stories\, published in 1919. Seen as a precursor to the great American novelists such as Fitzgerald\, Faulkner\, and Hemingway\, it is widely respected and now considered to be one of the most influential portraits of small-town life in the United States.\n\nHonoring Anderson as their source material\, Payne and Elhai have created an extraordinary trilogy of theatrical portraits. The score is rooted in musical Americana\, including “roots“ orchestration (piano\, violin\, accordion\, and string bass)\, in a vernacular folk style consistent with the characters’ rural culture and psychological state. Gorgeous melodies and expressive harmonies complement lyrics which are both clever and poignant\, creating a masterpiece of musical storytelling that combines the accessibility of musical theater with the emotional scope of American opera.\n\nTWISTED APPLES: STORIES FROM WINESBURG\, OHIO consists of three one-act pieces: Act One is “Answered Prayers”\, which tells of the Reverend Hartmann’s struggle with his sexual attraction to Kate Swift\, the local high school teacher. Kate\, in turn\, is drawn to her former student George Willard\, both  as an intellectual protege and a possible lover. Act Two is “Untold Lies”\, about farmhand Ray Pearson\, whose friendship with a young co-worker re-ignites in Ray his own longing for domestic freedom and youthful aspirations. Act Three\, “Twisted Apples”\, tells of George’s mother Elizabeth Willard\, her thwarted artistic ambitions\, and her determination to ensure that George will not be railroaded into a conventional life of mediocrity.\n\nAUDIENCES AND CRITICS RESPONSES:\n\nANSWERED PRAYERS: “Beautifully staged\, gorgeous and evocative libretto and score\, and knock-out singing / a human character study set to music and acted with superb and believable nuance / what a gorgeous show! / another fine example of how Nautilus and its typically superb composers\, actors\, and musicians pay attention to the subtle details that establish real characters and show us what they think and feel; they take away the extraneous\, punctuate musically\, and the heart reveals itself onstage”\n\nUNTOLD LIES: “It’s hard to imagine a more deeply affecting work / The musical idiom is hearty Americana\, with the simplicity of folk music and an operatic richness and complexity / the songs are beautifully complex and the singers and musicians are well up to their demands / gorgeous\, moving\, and beautifully done show / plenty of musically rewarding moments / the music and lyrics are rich and compelling / very well written\, composed\, and performed\, this show is probably more folk opera than musical theatre\, but utterly accessible”\n\n\nTWISTED APPLES: “This show has been mounted by seasoned and richly talented professionals / the subtle\, nuanced text is amplified by delicate\, gossamer music / an excellent script and some truly gorgeous music\, approachable and singable\, yet boasting Charles Ives-like intensity / breath-taking; heart-wrenching; quietly powerful; beautiful / both the music and the libretto are fantastic; poetic\, yet always serving to develop the characters and story / it gives beauty and nobility and a clear voice to natural facts that are easy to repress / as usual\, Nautilus comes through with top quality in all aspects.” \n\nABOUT NAUTILUS MUSIC-THEATER:\n\nNautilus provides opportunities for the artistic growth of music-theater artists who create\, develop\, and produce new operas and other forms of music-theater that are emotionally expansive\, dramatically engaging\, and spiritually stimulating.
