SUMMARY:Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an Artist Reception for About Time: Carleton & St. Olaf Colleges Fifth-Year EA Exhibition on Friday Feb 23 (7-9 pm) with Artist Talks at 7:30 pm.  Refreshments will be served.\nQuinn Batten \nCailan Carpenter \nHolland Hardie \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLaura Nakasaka \nJosh Torkelson \nEvan Weselmann \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbout Time\nCarleton & St. Olaf Colleges Fifth-Year EA Exhibition\nFebruary 22 – March 17\, 2018\n  \nCarleton & St. Olaf Colleges Fifth-Year EA Exhibition \nEvery year following graduation\, a select group of senior art majors are invited to continue their studies at Carleton College and St. Olaf College as part of a Fifth-Year Educational Associate/ Emerging Artist program. The Northfield Arts Guild is proud to showcase these up-and-coming artists! \nThis exhibition features the following artists showing various pieces created during their Fifth-Year experience: \n\nQuinn Batten: Multi-media sculpture\nStand up and walk to the nearest wall. Hold your hand out and move it close to the wall\, as close as you can without touching it. Spend a moment on this task\, getting even closer. How does it feel to give your entire attention to that distance\, that relationship between your hand and the wall?\nComing from a background in photography and moving towards a focus on sculpture\, I find myself taking the photographer’s concept of the “frame” and applying it to space that we experience in ways other than sight— the space that we feel through touch and sound\, the space we remember\, the space we imagine.  My art invites viewers to refocus their attention and reframe their experience in compelling new ways. \nCailan Carpenter: Ceramic sculpture\nI am a ceramic artist and potter who combines my love for painting and carving with my love for clay to create decorated functional ware. My images are inspired by the nature that surrounded me during my upbringing in the boundary waters of northern Minnesota and the Cascade Mountains of Washington state. \nHolland Hardie: Painting and prints\nMy home in the mountains of West Texas has a long history of human habitation\, and each group that occupied this region left their stories painted on the rocks. These stories stretch back over 5\,000 years\, and as cultures appeared and disappeared over the centuries\, so did the knowledge of each culture’s unique symbolism. The abstract designs of the region’s earliest inhabitants had already lost their meaning a thousand years before Jesus was born\, replaced by the new symbols of a new culture — symbolism is an inherently transient form of communication. In this piece\, I play around with that idea\, drawing from more modern symbolism such as Christian iconography to create my own language of symbols. These symbols explore my connection to my home and add a temporary chapter to a 5\,000 year story\, written in a language that will almost certainly die with me. \nLaura Nakasaka: Prints\, photography and books\nI have spent a lot of time this year thinking about time—how time is deceiving\, how time is remembered\, and the inescapable question of how time is best spent. My experimentation attempts to visualize the passage of time at this point in my life\, mapping memories both reliable and unreliable through prints\, drawings\, and photographs. Currently I work at Carleton College in the library and art department. \nJosh Torkelson: Sculpture\nErratic is inspired by naturally occurring glacial erratics\, rocks transported from their native bedrock hundreds of miles by the movement of ancient glaciers. The embedded presence of these rocks in their foreign landscapes mirror their own temporal positions bridging time from their geological formation and later glacial deposition\, to our own contemporary human interactions among them. In creating new erratics out of clay\, I push us to examine and consider our own place in this history. \nEvan Weselmann: Painting\nEvan is a painter and illustrator whose work deals with the intersection of digital image making modes in a contemporary analog capacity. \n\n\n  \n  \nExhibition Sponsors: \n \n\n\n2017-18 Gallery Season sponsored by:

The diverse travelers encounter suffragist Alice Paul\, early civil rights leader Ida Wells-Barnett\, 1970’s ERA proponents (and opponents)\, and women of today. Battling enormous obstacles\, including their own doubts and disagreements\, all arrive in Washington together\, asking: “Whose march is it?” and “What are the stakes?” \nWomen March on Washington is a new play in development and will be presented script-in-hand. From November 1 to December 31\, Jill will display the work she created during this grant project at the Arts Guild’s satellite gallery in the Allina Clinic in Northfield.  Every two weeks she will rotate in new work from the project. \nPlease join us for a Capstone and Presentation of her grant project on Friday\, November 10 at 7 pm in the upstairs Dance Studio at the Northfield Arts Guild Center for the Arts. \n          \n\nArtist Statement\nThe visual images I paint have to do with mapping. I strive to create work from different geological and psychological/emotional places\, work that is informed by movement between the then and here (between time and place). Within this framework\, I explore interior and exterior human connections—our connections to the self\, to others\, to the natural world. A trail\, indeed a map-like mark infuses my work with a grounding and gives it a conceptual time and place. \nAlthough I have addressed the issue of how to portray human interactions and connections that we often sense like palimpsests just under the skin\, for two decades\, the idea of exploring this part of humanity via pathways through landscapes\, seascapes\, and mindscapes is fairly new. It arose from a trip to northern Minnesota where I was surrounded by nature that in turn led me to read “The Old Ways\,” by Robert MacFarlane\, and to mapping my own walking\, then biking and sailing paths using GPS. \nThese works discuss light\, space\, color; they draw on the poetic nature of art. While most of them invoke the feeling of landscape space: broad and/or deep\, some are closer to the center of ourselves. In this body of work\, the pathways are defined with inks and thread. Feel free to wander them\, to bring your own curiosities\, memories\, and experiences to them\, and even perhaps to find your own destination. \n——————————- \nCathy Collison received an Advancing Artist grant from SEMAC for “Exploring Texture and Form in Glass”. From November 10 to December 24\, Cathy will display the work she created during this grant project as part of the Fine Craft Collective \nPlease join us for a Capstone and Presentation of her grant project on Friday\, November 10 at 7:30 pm in the Main Gallery at the Northfield Arts Guild Center for the Arts. \n         \nArtist Statement\nOrnaments are a traditional gift given from one generation to another and are often the only three-dimensional art that an individual or family collects and displays.  They are also a perfect small size in which to explore glass as an artistic medium. During this grant project\, I explored new modes of glass artistry through learning to work with a different type of glass (borosilicate)\, and expanded my repertoire of materials\, skills\, and techniques for glass work.My previous work\, both in beaded jewelry and in blown glass\, has been driven by color and pattern. During this project\, I expanded my technical skill set as well as my methods of artistic expression by using clear glass to create textural forms and not relying much on color and pattern to create beauty and interest. One challenge was to teach myself how to use a different type of glass than what I am used to working with. For making ornaments I have previously used “soft glass\,” but this would crack and loose its shape easily if I tried to manipulate the surface into spikes and other dimensional shapes. Through this project\, I expanded my knowledge and ability as a glass artist\, pushing my glass work further by creating new ornaments that explore texture and form.  This was an opportunity to expand the boundaries of glass ornaments and therefore expanding the boundaries of how the general public views art.\n\n\n\nThis activity made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and culture heritage fund.   \n\n  \n\n\n\n\nNorthfield Arts Guild Gallery:  304 Division St. S. SUMMARY:Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an Artist Reception on Friday\, September 29 from 7 – 9 pm\, with Artist Talks at 7:30 pm.  Refreshments will be served.\nTake The Fork in the Road: Realism and Abstraction\nAn exhibition featuring Paintings by Julie Fakler\, Ceramic Installation by Lisa Truax\, and colored pencil drawings by Steven Watson.\n\nSeptember 28 – October 28\, 2017\n     \nJulie Fakler paints on a gessoed hardboard with many thin watered down layers of acrylic paint. Her subjects are domesticated animals that include cats\, dogs\, and farm animals. This exhibition will feature the work created during her SEMAC grant project after visiting South East Minnesota farms to meet the farm animals and farmers. \nLisa Truax says of her installation pieces in which she combines traditional ceramic materials and found natural materials: ”We think of nature as untouched and wild\, and not something controlled or created by humans. Through my work I attempt to create a sense of connection to nature in the viewer\, yet through the utilization of abstraction avoid direct connections to specific places.” \nSteven Watson uses a familiar medium (colored pencil) in his work\, but takes an unconventional path in his exploration and execution of secular and spiritual themes.  His drawing technique\, described as “regimented rectangles” or simply “color-on\, color-off writing” expands on the already liberating notions of drawing – despite this regimentation. \nExhibition Sponsors: \n    \n\nThis activity made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and culture heritage fund.   \n\n2017-18 Gallery Season sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Artist Conversation with Stephan Koplowitz
DESCRIPTION:Topic for September 28:\nSpecial Exhibition Opportunity for Visual Artists –\nCome learn how you can have work exhibited in The Northfield Experience\nYou asked for opportunities to grow as artists\, and we listened!\nThis conversation will feature an upcoming exhibition opportunity for 2D Visual Artists in The Northfield Experience. Veteran Director/Choreographer/Media Artist Stephan Koplowitz will create a site-specific\, immersive performance event in May 2018 using the town of Northfield\, Minnesota as its canvas and subject matter. Comprised of a series of inter-laced performances of theater\, dance\, visual installations\, and digital media\, this performance event will be inspired by the history\, architecture\, and unique community of Northfield. It aims not only to create a unique artistic experience\, but to bring together several academic and public communities united towards the development and creation of this work. An intended outcome is that all involved parties will be more closely aligned and acquainted following this shared collaboration. \nStephan Koplowitz is internationally known for his work on the concert stage and for creating original site-specific multi-media works for architecturally significant sites. His site work aims to alter people’s perspectives of place\, site\, and scale\, all infused with a sense of the human condition.
