SUMMARY:Virtual Riverfront Fine Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:VIRTUAL RIVERFRONT FINE ARTS FESTIVAL\nThe artist shops on the Virtual Festival page will go live on Saturday\, September 12. From this page\, visitors and shoppers will be directed to the participating artists’ websites. \n  \nEvery year\, the Northfield Arts Guild presents the Riverfront Fine Arts Festival on the weekend after Labor Day along the idyllic banks of the Cannon River in downtown Northfield.  In 2020\, we are excited to host this year’s festival online for the first time in our history. We recognize the importance of keeping this economic opportunity active for artists during a year where large\, in-person gatherings aren’t possible. \nThe Guild’s 2020 Virtual Riverfront Fine Arts Festival features a tremendous variety of local and regional artists offering their works for sale\, accompanied by online artist interviews\, art making demonstrations and studio tours.

SUMMARY:Virtual Reception for 20/20 Optics: New Approaches
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live\, Virtual Reception to celebrate the artists on Thursday\, September 17 from 6:30-7:30 pm. Attendees will be welcome to ask questions of the artists\, and see a slideshow of artwork while hearing from each of the participating artists. Any questions please email heather@northfieldartsguild.org. \n\nClick here to tune in to the Virtual Reception via Zoom \n\n  \n  \n\n\n20/20 Optics: New Approaches\nSEPT 3 – OCT 2\, 2020\n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition features works by five regional artists Sheri Grube\, Sharol Nau\, Michael Ruth\, Erika Terwilliger and Annie Young. The work in this exhibition showcases how each of these artists explore traditional methods and media with fresh perspectives and techniques. \nWatch the Virtual Tour of the exhibition\n\nFEATURED ARTISTS: \nSheri Grube \n\n \n\nSheri is an acrylic artist\, who loves to incorporate textures and colors into her art while delving into deep emotions. Her pieces are often vivid\, imaginative\, and expressive. Many who view her art feel her definitive passion. Art helps transfer her to another part of the world and sometimes the universe\, as she draws reference from the natural world around her. Creating art takes her mind off of chronic pain and isolation. During the current isolation\, Sheri has been painting more frequently because her art helps her remember happier experiences. \nShe has a rare neurological movement disorder called DYSTONIA\, which affects her jaw\, neck\, shoulder and hand. Dystonia is a chronic\, often painful\, neurological disorder characterized by extreme muscle spasms that cause involuntary movements and postures in the body and limbs. She finds that while she is tremoring\, picking up a paintbrush makes the tremor stop. While she is painting\, she finds that it calms her soul as well as her body. \n\n\n\nSharol Nau \n\n \nSharol has been painting\, printing\, and sculpting since the 1970’s\, and after attending Art & Math Conference in 1998\, felt compelled to experiment with simple mathematical principles as a guide to further her artistic expression. \nThe particular idea of Book Folding came to her when she was helping sort books at an annual book sale that benefits a local hospital\, and it occurred to her that a good portion of the books would be left unsold and possibly end up in a landfill. On the last day of the sale she bought some of these recycled books for experimentation. \nSharol creates these folded book sculptures by folding the individual pages based on mathematical principles\, such as the parabola\, the longest crease\, and others to fuel her creative energy. The parabola is a curve with reflective symmetry in which each point on the curve is the same distance from a fixed focus point and a fixed line. This is one of Sharol’s favorites because it is quite versatile and gives her plenty of options for creative considerations. In each of her folded book sculptures\, the wave-like forms resulting from the sequence of folds are varied and beautiful. \nSharol has also created mixed media pieces inspired by Goldbach’s conjecture – one of the oldest and best-known unsolved problems in number theory and all of mathematics. It states: every even integer greater than 2 can be expressed as the sum of two primes.  This Goldbach Conjecture that had never been proven became the visual that Sharol discovered she could work with\, inspiring many designs in this series. \n\nMichael Ruth \n\n\nNeedless to say that the Coronavirus has greatly impacted the psyche of people all across the globe. One not need be an artist to see and feel the emotional change that has taken place. Being in this situation we find ourselves is that it does impact the creative structure of our minds. What we are creating now\, may never be repeated once this pandemic is past.  This could be viewed as one of the creative times in modern history. \nSince late February I have been creating a series which I call “Pandemia”.  The series is made up of digital visuals that are sequential representing\, to me\, the spread of COVID-19 \n\n\n\n\nErika Terwilliger \n\n\nThrough my practice I’m interested in taking stock of the mundane objects and materials that surround me. I want to care for these things\, but in a way that eventually wears them into nothing. I want to work within systems that toe the line of absurdity\, but still know when it’s time to shed their lining. Every year my family picks\, peels\, cans\, and stores 40 quarts of pears. The fruit moves from tree to kitchen to jar to shelf to table to human to toilet. I’m interested in the evolving relationship between object and container\, value and utility\, and the labor required to move domestic objects through these progressing stages of use and value. \nCurrently I am building ceramic and plant-based sculptures inspired by roof vents. Over the course of the summer these pieces\, which I’ve planted with a variety of cover crops like alfalfa and clover\, will grow and change as the plant roots take the shape of their ceramic container. At the end of the growing season I will open the molds to reveal the sculptural plantings inside. Through this work I consider how buildings like barns and houses can act like bodies\, maintaining homeostasis through ventilation and moisture control for the organisms they contain. \n\nAnnie Young \n\n\n\n\nPainting has always been a means for me to communicate what I am unable to say using words. I had looked forward to exhibiting in the year 2020 because as a person and artist living without the use of my eyesight\, I was eager to ‘play’ on the idea of what 20/20 vision actually meant. And\, in a way\, this collection does just that. Maybe not in the way I envision it would (pun intended). I typically paint with bright\, brilliant\, bold colors. Lots of them. However\, I found myself painting with merely two or three.  Most often blues or greens. I reached for white to add contrast and from time to time orange if necessary\, possibly yellow. Again\, this is so unlike me. Very unusual. \nMy process is dictated by my dreams. I have no say really. And my dreams have been simple. Very simple. And I trust my process\, my dreams. So I paint out what I dream and when I do\, I am rewarded. I received this was of peace to my soul. A calming. It is my hope those who view will experience the same.

SUMMARY:Virtual Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live\, virtual Artist Reception on Thursday\, January 14 from 6:30-7:30 pm to celebrate three artists: Anne Rynearson\, Mary Welke and Julie Fakler. Attendees will be able to ask questions of the artists\, and see a slideshow of artwork while hearing from each of the participating artists. \nCLICK HERE TO JOIN THE VIRTUAL RECEPTION \nEmail heather@northfieldartsguild.org with any questions! \n\nSEE EXHIBITION CATALOG\nWATCH EXHIBITION VIRTUAL TOUR\n\n“Nature: Seen and Unseen” features recent artwork by Anne Rynearson and Mary Welke. \nThe inspiration for Rynearson’s current series on canvas and paper is informed by her interests in natural processes and forms\, as well as research into areas of cosmology\, philosophy\, mythical narratives\, mysticism and symbolism in visual art. These concepts and image references share themes that involve shifting reality\, altered states of perception and fantastic journeys or destinations. \nMary Welke’s mixed media paintings explore both the physicality and fragile nature of prairie renewal\, farmland restoration\, and soil health as she interprets these ideas into her latest art techniques. Her work has a playful and whimsical quality as she moves from delicate line work to heavily collaged prairie ash and organic matter embedded onto some of her pieces. Others\, she simply burned with a torch. \nAnne Rynearson and Mary Welke are each fiscal year 2020 recipients of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation by the Minnesota State Legislature\, and by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \n\nIn the “Paint a Portrait of Your Pet” exhibition Julie Fakler is displaying her example paintings from the Paint Your Pet classes she facilitates. For every class she teaches she creates an example painting\, which generally takes her 15 to 20 minutes to complete. Julie teaches the pet portrait classes step-by-step\, giving instruction for every step before the students start painting. Most of the class time is spent giving each student individual attention. \nJulie will be offering a Paint Your Pet class at the Guild along with this exhibition on Saturday\, Jan 30 from 1-3 pm.  This class is open to youth and adults\, and beginning painters are welcome! \nJulie Fakler is a fiscal year 2021 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. \n2020-21 Gallery Season Sponsor:

SUMMARY:All School Art Show: Creativity is Essential! opens
DESCRIPTION:ALL SCHOOL ART SHOW:\nCREATIVITY IS ESSENTIAL\nFEB 11-MARCH 6\, 2021\n  \n\nEvery year the Northfield art teachers curate the All School Art Show to celebrate the incredible artistic talent that is bubbling up in the young people of our community. This show has been an annual celebration at the Northfield Arts Guild for the past three decades.  The 2020-21 school year has been anything but typical.  But even in the midst of uncertainty and less-than-ideal learning environments\, the students have continued to experiment\, grow\, and achieve as artists. \nMuch of the artwork that has been created this year is not in teachers’ actual hands. Rather\, it exists in digital files submitted by students working remotely. From the student digital collection and from the teacher’s own digital archives\, each art teacher has selected four images that best summarized their collective experience during this unprecedented year.  These images form a quilt of ideas that represent the struggles and successes of teaching art remotely.  These images will also\, one day\, allow future educators to understand some of what it was like to teach and learn through a global pandemic. \nIn a typical year nearly 1000 pieces of student art would fill the Guild’s gallery space\, and our community would gather in person to celebrate and share the students’ accomplishments.  Although this years’ show is different\, the hope is that it will nevertheless create the same sense of pride in our community of art educators and the art students who continued to create even in the midst of vast turmoil and separation. This show will demonstrate that even in the middle of a pandemic our community’s creative spirit was able to create something beautiful together. \n\n \nE-magination Celebration (Feb 27\, 11 am-1 pm)\non the Guild’s Facebook and YouTube pages \nThe Guild invites our community to E-magination Celebration\, a free day of online programming including Gallery Tours\, Arts Making and performances from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday\, February 27\, 2021. Follow along on the Guild’s Facebook and YouTube pages with new content added regularly throughout the celebration\, or watch later as all of the videos will remain online. \nPERFORMANCES Watch Dancing Through the Storm 2020 and highlights from the Project Purple Door Youth Theater production of The Importance of Being Earnest in a Pandemic . \nGALLERY TOURS A highlight of E-magination Celebration will be a series of videos of teacher reflections\, digital student artwork\, and a tour of Creativity is Essential\, this year’s All School Art Show installed in our Main Gallery. \nART MAKING Make your own art at home throughout the day! SUMMARY:"Fermenation" Exhibition Opens
DESCRIPTION:ANNUAL EA SHOW:\nFERMENTATION\nMARCH 11-APRIL 10\, 2021\n\nEach year following graduation\, a select group of artists are invited to continue their studies as part of an Educational Associate (Carleton) / Fifth-Year Emerging Artist (St. Olaf) programs. This exhibition features recent works by artists in those programs; the Guild is proud to showcase these up-and-coming artists! Fermentation features the following artists showing pieces created during their EA experience: Eddie Bryson V (painting)\, Thomas Hardy (painting)\, Sijin Kim (prints and sculpture)\, Junyi Min (time-based and mixed media)\, Paddy Mittag-McNaught (prints and sculpture) and Alekz Thoms (mixed media) in the Main Gallery of the Northfield Arts Guild\, 304 Division Street South. \nWe held a live\, Virtual Artist Reception to celebrate these artists on Thursday\, April 8 from 6:30-7:30 pm. Attendees were able to ask questions of the artists\, and see a slideshow of artwork while hearing from each of the participating artists. \nWATCH A RECORDING OF THE VIRTUAL RECEPTION: \nQuestions? email heather@northfieldartsguild.org \n\n\n\n\nEddie Bryson V \n \n\n\n\nMy hometown of Memphis\, TN has deep roots in the history of music\, being world-renowned as the “Home of The Blues” and an influential center for soul\, rock n’ roll\, and hip-hop. Being a proud Memphian often includes having a good ear and a strong respect of the music we grew up listening to. That respect is grown from an important role: Music makes you feel; music makes you move. Movement and feelings are rhythmic\, full of ups and downs and plateaus and pace. Brief and static. Forceful and energetic. Prolonged and reflective. Sad and romantic. The works I present are inspired by songs\, some originals written by myself and others written and performed by my growing musical inspirations. They seek to share a place in the rhythm of everyday life for us just as music does. \n\nThomas Hardy \nThe ecological and climate crises we find ourselves in cannot be fixed with surface-level solutions. It has become abundantly clear that to do anything about them\, we must confront their deeper causes: attitudes and practices like the human-nature dichotomy\, universal commodification\, white supremacy\, and the paradigm of endless growth. Unspeakable things become possible when we are made to think in impersonal abstractions rather than engage with the world as something complex and elegant\, interconnected and mutually dependent\, inscrutable and irreducible. \n\nSijin Kim \n \nViolence does not end when the act is over. The affect carries over\, in the lives of the people directly involved\, and further to the people who experience it vicariously through images and descriptions; the voyeurs. In my works\, I am repeating abstracted violence in an attempt to isolate the act of violence from the perpetrators\, the victims\, and the voyeurs. Thereby\, I want to explore the way we view images or descriptions of violence\, the way we enjoy media saturated with violence\, and the way we now experience violence. \n\nJunyi Min \n \nWhat is “nature” and the “natural” in the age of digital technologies\, the anthropocene\, and capitalism? The definition of nature to be in opposition to human and human creations may prove to be a moot point in the near future. My works shown in this exhibition can be seen as musings about the rifts between man and nature\, physical and digital\, the natural and the technological. \n\nPaddy Mittag-McNaught \n \nAfter a childhood of stacking blocks and a collegiate study of architecture\, I have realized my artwork uses motifs of modularity to explore community. I find within this exploration\, I place an importance on space and structure\, light and shadow. \n\nAlekz Thoms \nCombining the art of darning and the tarot deck\, I’ve painted my late mother and her sister as children before methodically and meditatively weaving myself into their absence. The Death tarot card is one of ending eras and new beginnings; holding the tension of gray space\, of the good with the bad\, new from the old\, closing doors to opening windows. Every aspect holds meaning – Death’s five petaled white rose is the purity and innocence of change\, the black dress an armor of invincibility and mystery. Death’s boat the journey from one world to the other\, from life to death\, from here to there. The presentation of the sisters and the second diptych bring the cycle of life\, the beauty of death back home\, back to the walls where we preserve the keepsakes of the love of grief. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n2020-21 Gallery Season Sponsor: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFermentation Sponsors: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n
