SUMMARY:Population 485
DESCRIPTION:by Michael Perry with music by S. Carey.  Adapted from the book Population 485: Meeting Your Neighbors One Siren at a Time.\n\nSeptember 21 – September 30\, 2018\nMeeting your neighbors one siren at a time!  Based on Perry’s bestselling book by the same title\, this newly released stage version celebrates Middle America and the understanding that one must give of themselves to truly live and be a part of a community. The book and play center on the conscientious members of the volunteer fire department and the community relationships they build. This is a sometimes comic\, sometimes heartbreaking bestselling memoir of life and death.  We are one of the first community theaters to produce this brilliant stage adaptation.\nDirected by Mishia Edwards\n \nMishia Edwards’ previous work with the Guild include directing Little Women The Musical\, Proof\, The Merry Wives of Windsor\, Crimes of The Heart\, Little Shop of Horrors\, It’s a Wonderful Life\, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and\, most recently God Girl.  Edwards also works with The Chameleon Theatre and directs St. Olaf College’s Summer Theatre Camp. \n\nMany thanks to our 2018-19 Theater Season Sponsors:\n  \nThank you to our Production Sponsor!

DESCRIPTION:  \n\nGalen Arthur Brown: Shapes and Shadows\n September 28-October 27\, 2018\n\n\nOn Friday\, September 28 from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. we invite the community help us celebrate Galen Brown and experience his artwork at the Opening Reception of this exhibition; refreshments will be served. \n\n6:30 pm Selections from Shrapnel in the Heart: Letters and Remembrances from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial by Laura Palmer\, read by actors: Susan Carlson\, Kevin Chapman\, Felicia Crosby\, Elin Odegaard\, Jill Luoma-Overstreet\, Bryan Reed\, and Rob Schanilec. Directed by Rachel Haider.\n7:30 pm Remarks from Curator\, Kay Adkins Brown.\n\n\n  \n“My art is not a lecture\, I just want people to think.” – Galen Brown \nOver his career as an artist\, Brown’s work centered around that theme. His images delve into the shapes and shadows of what he observed. Whether it was the shapes related to war and peace\, the shapes of justice and injustice\, shapes behind other artist’s works\, shapes in landscapes\, and even the shapes related to his own cancer\, he challenges the viewer to think. For many years\, Galen Brown was involved with the Northfield Arts Guild\, as an exhibitor\, volunteer and Gallery Committee member.  The Guild is proud to host this Minnesota premier. \n“We are so pleased to bring this exhibit to the Northfield Arts Guild\, at the close of the 50th Anniversary of the national commemoration of the Vietnam War. SUMMARY:Leaves of Grass - Illuminated
DESCRIPTION:SEE THIS SHOW IN NORTHFIELD BEFORE IT PLAYS AT THE GUTHRIE (next summer). \nThe capstone event for Northfield Poetry Festival. \nAdmission is free for this first-come-first-serve non-ticketed event.\nA free will offering will be accepted. \nLeaves of Grass – Illuminated has received rave reviews in Minneapolis and New York City:\n“Both Whitman and Scully are major figures; they contain multitudes.” (Village Voice)\n“Scully is the perfect caretaker for Whitman’s legacy.” (StarTribune)\n“Patrick Scully was born to play Walt Whitman.” (Lavender Magazine)\n\n\n“Leaves of Grass – Illuminated is about history\, art\, and literature – presenting aspects of Walt Whitman’s life and work that are fascinating for our time\, in which discussions of male/male relations have moved out of the shadows into the light of day. The show reveals relationships between men in Whitman’s era\, from Whitman’s utopian vision for male/male relations to the forces that sought to deny them.\nLeaves of Grass – Illuminated  reveals how we got here. I believe there would be no marriage equality in the US today if Whitman hadn’t first written Leaves of Grass in 1855. This show celebrates that\, making historical connections from the past to our present\, and provides sustenance for battles that still remain.  \nThere is a focus in this show on Whitman’s sexuality. It presents him as a complete human being\, as opposed to traditional approaches which erase his sexuality\, denying its importance to his life and to his poetry. Whitman made clear the pressures he faced writing about taboo topics (including\, but not only\, men loving men)\, and the consequences he faced for doing this. This show reflects that. There is nothing in the show that is sexually explicit. This show is appropriate for high school age and above.\nWhitman was a subversive artist\, a radical.”\n-Patrick Scully\n\n\nWhitman wrote:\nDoubtless I could not have perceived the universe\, or written one of my poems\, \nIf I had not freely given myself to comrades\, to love.         \n– Excerpt from Leaves of Grass\n\nFind our more about the show.\n\nFind our more about Patrick Scully.\n\n \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

The songs communicate complex ideas delivered with pop-sensible charm. SUMMARY:411: The Cactus Blossoms
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 6\, 2018 at 7:30 pm\n$25.00\nSOLD OUT\n“the duo’s gorgeous harmonies and ageless sound spell out just the beginning for these brothers.”\n-All Things Considered\, NPR \n“The group is led by Minneapolis-based brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum\, who\, despite different last names\, put their genetically encoded harmonizing skills and reverence for musical history to good use on the collection of energetic toe-tappers and emotionally resonant ballads — which all seem filtered through David Lynch’s surrealist lens. There’s no getting around it: You’re Dreaming is pretty damn dreamy.”  – The Rolling Stone\n“It’s an honest\, unvarnished\, completely engaging style that is clearly retro but in no way musty. Take some rockabilly\, add some melancholy bluesy swoon\, waltz time C&W and peppy folk-pop  and mix with natural\, innocent\, fresh faced vocals that feel as if these guys have been singing together their whole lives…  music guaranteed to make your day better.”  – American Songwriter \nRead more about The Cactus Blossoms\nVenue:  Northfield Arts Guild Theater\n411 Third Street W.\, Northfield\, MN \nWith Opener \nCannon River Currents\nFolk duo Delia Kain and Helen Forsythe play a unique blend of old time and bluegrass music on their fiddles and banjos with sweet vocal harmonies.\n  \n Many Thanks to our 2018-19 411 Concert Series sponsors:\n   \n  \nand to The Cactus Blossom Concert Sponsor:\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Give to the Max Day!
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your support of the Northfield Arts Guild!  Please consider a gift TODAY!\n \n10 Reasons to Support the Arts from www.AmericansfortheArts.org\n1. Arts promote true prosperity. The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us— fostering creativity\, goodness\, and beauty. The arts help us express our values\, build bridges between cultures\, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity\, religion\, or age. When times are tough\, art is salve for the ache.\n2. Arts improve academic performance. Students with an education rich in the arts have higher GPAs and standardized test scores\, and lower drop-out rates—benefits reaped by students regardless of socio-economic status. Students with 4 years of arts or music in high school average 100 points better on their SAT scores than students with just one-half year of arts or music.\n3. Arts strengthen the economy. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reports that the arts and culture sector represents 3.25 percent of the nation’s GDP—a larger share of the economy than tourism and agriculture. The nonprofit arts industry alone generates $135 billion in economic activity annually (spending by organizations and their audiences) that supports 4.1 million jobs and generates $22.3 billion in government revenue.\n4. Arts are good for local merchants. Attendees at nonprofit arts events spend $24.60 per person\, per event\, beyond the cost of admission on items such as meals\, parking\, and babysitters. Attendees who live outside the county in which the arts event takes place spend twice as much as their local counterparts ($39.96 vs. $17.42)—valuable revenue for local businesses and the community.\n5. Arts drive tourism. Arts travelers are ideal tourists\, staying longer and spending more to seek out authentic cultural experiences. The U.S. Department of Commerce reports that the percentage of international travelers including museum visits on their trip has grown steadily since 2003 (18 to 24 percent). The share attending concerts and theater performances has grown from 14 to 17 percent since 2003.\n6. Arts are an export industry. U.S. exports of arts goods (e.g.\, movies\, paintings\, jewelry) grew to $72 billion in 2011\, while imports were just $25 billion—a $47 billion arts trade surplus.\n7. Arts spark creativity and innovation. The Conference Board reports that creativity is among the top 5 applied skills sought by business leaders—with 72 percent saying creativity is of high importance when hiring. The biggest creativity indicator? A college arts degree. Their Ready to Innovate report concludes\, “The arts—music\, creative writing\, drawing\, dance—provide skills sought by employers of the 3rd millennium.” Nobel laureates in the sciences are 17 times more likely to be actively engaged in the arts than average scientists.\n8. Arts have social impact. University of Pennsylvania researchers have demonstrated that a high concentration of the arts in a city leads to higher civic engagement\, more social cohesion\, higher child welfare\, and lower poverty rates. A vibrant arts community ensures that young people are not left to be raised solely in a pop culture and tabloid marketplace.\n9. Arts improve healthcare. Nearly one-half of the nation’s healthcare institutions provide arts programming for patients\, families\, and even staff. 78 percent deliver these programs because of their healing benefits to patients—shorter hospital stays\, better pain management\, and less medication.\n10. Arts mean business. The Creative Industries are arts businesses that range from nonprofit museums\, symphonies\, and theaters to for-profit film\, architecture\, and design companies. A 2014 analysis of Dun & Bradstreet data counts 750\,453 businesses in the U.S. involved in the creation or distribution of the arts that employ 3.1 million people—representing 4.2 percent of all businesses and 2.2 percent of all employees\, respectively.

SUMMARY:A Christmas Story
DESCRIPTION:by Philip Grecian \nDecember 7-9 and December 13-16\, 2018 \nSet in the 1940s this comedy follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder BB gun under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother\, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself\, at Higbee’s Department Store. The consistent response?? “You’ll shoot your eye out!” All the elements from the beloved motion picture are here\, including the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; the Little Orphan Annie decoder pin; Ralphie’s father winning a lamp shaped like a woman’s leg in a net stocking and everything needed to make your holidays hilarious. (This is the play\, not the musical version.) \nWe are excited to announce that Unum Vox will welcome our audience with caroling from 6:30-7:00pm on opening night!  Many thanks to the singers and their director Jonah Heinen. \n  \n  \n  \nDirected by Justin Cervantes \nMany thanks to our 2018-19 Theater Season Sponsors:\n  \nThank you to our Production Co-Sponsors!\n
