SUMMARY:For the Love of Cities
DESCRIPTION:Two Events about Cities\, Planning\, and Northfield\n Where and When: \n\nOn April 16\, Thursday\, the Northfield Arts and Culture Commission is sponsoring a discussion of the book For the Love of Cities: The Love Affair between People and their Places\, by Peter Kageyama. The April 16 event will take place from 7:15 to 9:00 p.m. around the fireplace in the Great Hall at Carleton College. (You can order the book at Content Bookstore\, downtown.)\nOn April 23\, Thursday\, ACC will sponsor a viewing of the TED Talk featuring Kageyama\, followed by a panel discussion of his ideas. The moderator will be Suzie Nakasian\, Council Member\, First Ward; respondents will include Scott Bradley\, MnDOT Office of Environmental Stewardship\, Director of Context Sensitive Solutions; and Nick Haggenmiller\, City Manager of Northfield. The event will take place from 7:15 to 9:00 p.m. at the Weitz Center for Creativity Cinema.\n\nWho’s Involved: \n\nThe main sponsor of the events is the Arts and Culture Commission\, which works with the Council to advance the arts as a vital part of city identity. Event co-sponsors include the Northfield Library\, the Northfield Arts Guild\, and the Beautify Northfield Coalition\, but there are many organizations involved in planning.\n\nWhy? \n\nRecently Northfield has seen an outpouring of thinking and planning about the future of the city\, including discussions of built environment\, cultural life\, and economic planning. Bridge Square planning\, Roundtable work on models of urban design\, including an “arts corridor”; and deliberations by the City Council about Rte. 3 re-design options . . . all of these discussions are shaping the future and livability of the city. Discussion of Kageyama’s book is an opportunity for people to think about what they love about their city and want to develop for the future.\n\nWho’s Kageyama? \n\nKageyama\, former president of Creative Tampa Bay\, is the co-founder and producer of the Creative Cities Summit\, an interdisciplinary event that brings together citizens and practitioners around the big idea of the city. In his book\, he explores how city leaders and citizens have identified and developed their emotional connections with their cities\, opening up new possibilities for community\, social\, and economic developmen

SUMMARY:Jill Ewald Exhibit Opens
DESCRIPTION:Fiber Art \nApril 13-May 31 \nSince the mid-1990s\, I have explored ways to visualize interior and exterior human connections though painting and drawing. Stylistically\, my work is as abstract as the concepts addressed by it.  Recently I began to enlist a variety of materials including ink and thread on raw canvas as a means to explore movement in time and space. My investigation of these concepts includes creating trails through landscapes\, waterways\, and mindscapes. \n–Jill Ewald \nJill Ewald received the M.F.A. in visual arts from The Vermont College\, Montpelier\, Vermont\, and a B.A. from St. Olaf College\, Northfield\, Minnesota. She was an art apprentice at St. Olaf for the year following graduation. From 1998 through 2013\, she served as director of the Flaten Art Museum at St. Olaf College\, where she has also taught visual art classes. She served on the artist panel of the Minnesota Artist Exhibition Program at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. She has received awards and grants from shows\, the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council and the State Arts Board. Her work has been exhibited frequently in the Midwest at venues such as the Rochester Art Center\, Rochester\, MN\, Minneapolis Institute of Arts\, Circa Gallery\, Minneapolis\, the Duluth Art Institute\, Duluth\, MN\, and the Plains Arts Museum\, Fargo\, North Dakota. Her work was also included in the American Drawing Biennial at the Muscarelle Museum of Art in Williamsburg\, VA\, and the Westmorland Art Nationals in Youngblood\, PA. Ewald’s work is also found in several public and private collections around the U.S. and in Norway and Canada. She lives with her husband Ken and works in Northfield\, Minnesota. She is a member of the Northfield Arts Guild.
