DESCRIPTION:See art. Hear art. Make art. Taste art! \n BUY TICKETS \nThis fundraiser\, benefiting the Northfield Arts Guild\, promises a night filled with art in all kinds of forms: a live musical hootenanny\, samplings of local homebrew and craft beer\, the final night of the Northfield Teachers gallery show\, and grown up make-and-take art projects! \nHomebrew samples will be available from local brewers including Randy Clay\, Eric Hazlett\, Gabe Meerts\, Jacob Melby\, and Meetinghouse Brewery in Dundas (Brad Magerkuth and Andrew Burns). College City Beverage will also be sampling beverages from various craft breweries. Light snacks will also be available throughout the night. \nA musical “hootenanny” will start around 8 pm and feature sets of songs from the night’s MC\, Daniel Groll of The Counterfactuals\, Chris Koza\, Michael Ferrier from Fathom Lane\, Wendy Smith from Wendy Smith and the Zillionaires\, Alison Rae\, and Anna Marie Mitchell. \nGallery exhibit featuring work from current art teachers in Northfield Public Schools will be on display\, and the Gift Shop will be open\, too\, to see examples from a wide variety of NAG member artists. \nAttendees can also get their creative side on through art-making activities. Staff and volunteers will be showing folks how to make or personalize their own beer mug\, or coasters in the NAG Clay Studio. Plus professional printmaker Jan Shoger will be helping attendees create beautiful (and easy!) prints in the NAG Art Studio. \nTickets are $40 for a single ticket\, $35/each for two or more tickets. DESCRIPTION:The Northfield Arts Guild invites you to participate in our annual “Members‘ Exhibition”\nSept 4 – 19\, 2015!\n\n\n\n\nOne of the benefits of membership at the Northfield Arts Guild is the opportunity for members to exhibit their original artwork in the Annual Members‘ Exhibition. This year’s Members‘ Exhibition takes place from September 4-19\, 2015. We invite adult members to submit up to three unique pieces of their own work (or one piece if it is over 36″ in any dimension) to be included in this show. This invitation is only open to current adult members of the Guild. All are invited to join or renew their membership at the time of their submission.\n\nDEADLINES:\nInventory: A digital inventory of work to be submitted is to be emailed to heather@northfieldartsguild.org no later than Tuesday\, August 11th\, 2015. \n\nArtwork drop off: All work should be brought to the Northfield Arts Guild gallery on Tuesday\, September 1\, 2015 between 12 and 6 pm. In addition\, each piece must be ready to display: 2D works need to be framed and wired\, and hanging textiles must be configured with the appropriate hardware. No work can be accepted after September 1. If this is an inconvenient date for you\, please have someone else deliver the work\, or call the office to make arrangements to bring your work before this date.\nAny artwork submitted must include the title\, media\, size\, date\, and retail sale price (including the 40% gallery commission). Work that is not ready to display or is exceptionally fragile will be excluded from the show; please submit the work accordingly\n\nThe Artists’ Reception will be Friday\, September 18th from 7 – 9 pm and light refreshments will be served. In addition to celebrating the Artists this evening\, we will also celebrate all members of the Arts Guild at the annual member meeting\, taking place from 6 -7 pm. Many visitors make their way to downtown Northfield during this time of year for the beginning of college school year\, and the Defeat of Jesse James Days. DESCRIPTION:2015 marks the 25th Anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Northfield Arts Guild presents a retrospective of this important moment by featuring artists with disabilities in all of its gallery spaces\, in addition to facilitating community conversations about accessibility and inclusion\, a professional development workshop for educators on inclusive practices\, and a day of performing arts events. \nArtists featured in the Main Gallery include painter Annie Young (Burnsville)\, painter Sherrie Grube (Burnsville)\, wood artist Paul J. Flick (Minneapolis)\, and literary artist Alison Bergblom Johnson. \nThe Up Gallery features the work of visual artists from Laura Baker Services\, facilitated by Martin Thorsheim\, and Rob Morrow’s photographs of  performing artists from the “On Stage” Broadway Review\, facilitated by Rachel Haider and Shari Setchell\, and LBSA Music Therapy department of Jennifer Pelletier\, Jamie Israelson and Joshua Richardson. \nAllina Medical Clinic showcases a photo essay documenting the work of the Guild’s Autism and the Arts program\, led by Laura Goodwin. DESCRIPTION:Screening of the film “FIXED: The Science/Fiction of Human Enhancement\,” a documentary film produced and directed by Regan Pretlow Brashear. The screening will be followed by a discussion facilitated by Dr. Tammy Berberi\, Associate Professor of French with an emphasis in disability studies at the University of MN\, Morris. No reservations are necessary. \nArtists include\n\nDance pieces from…\n\nCary Bittinger has had the opportunity to share her love of dance and the power of movement with diverse populations that range in destinations from her home state of Minnesota to Chicago\, Brooklyn\, Harbour Island\, Bahamas\, Durham\, North Carolina\, Wisconsin\, and even Sydney Australia. Each population she encountered\, she saw the essences of what movement provides: joy\, freedom\, peace\, and an understanding of the human connection that is felt through the mind/body/spirit connection. She received her masters degree in Dance/Movement Therapy & Counseling from Columbia College Chicago in 2009\, which taught her how to approach movement from a different lens. In Chicago\, she was able to work with a group of high school students from the westside through a particular style of movement called footworking. Footworking originated in Chicago and allows the people who are dancing to express what they have been through in their lives. Currently\, she is working as a Dance Therapist at Head Start in St.Paul\, MN and for Young Dance in Minneapolis\, MN. Movement has no boundary\, it is limitless\, even in stillness a dance is being created & with each breath a story is being told through movement. \nAngelique Lele has been doing theater for most of her life. Performing in the requisite school plays as a child and then\, when she was older and felt she really wanted to make a statement\, co-founding an all women’s theater company called Toxic Shock Stage. In TSS\, a Los Angeles based theater company\, the women wrote\, produced and directed all their own work. In LA\, Angelique was introduced to the aerial arts and began to do trapeze and silks. It was only a matter of time before she became interested in performing. She began performing around LA and then Minneapolis when she moved to town in 2008. In 2012\, an accident while she was training on the trapeze paralyzed her. Introduced to the beautiful world of integrative dance in 2014\, Angelique is excited to have the chance to begin performing again and open to the challenge of exploring a new physicality on stage. She feels excited to be performing with Cary and Kathleen. \nKathleen Pender grew up in Northfield and received her B.A. in Dance from St. Olaf College. Kathleen teaches creative ballet\, ballet\, tap\, and modern classes at the Northfield Arts Guild and assists classes with Young Dance in Minneapolis. She is also Company Manager with performance company Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater and performs for Minneapolis-based choreographer Taja Will. With deep passion for dance education and performance\, Kathleen is grateful to be teaching for the Northfield Arts Guild’s dance program\, which served as her dance foundation and fostered her development as an artist. Directed by Sara Pillatzki-Warzeha\, and performed by the Northfield Arts Guild’s A+ Art Club and special guests Sara Pillatzki-Warzeha\, Brian Warzeha\, Ryan Puffer  \n“Las Chiapanecas” dance piece (music: Traditional music from Chiapas) danced by The Baile Folklórico Mexicano dance group. The Baile Folklórico Mexicano dance group of the Northfield Arts Guild was founded in 2005 by Ana Baez Toquillas.  Four dancers\, two students and two teachers\, will be performing today.  Atia Cole has danced with the group for nine years and is a high school student.  Liana Cole is also a student and has been with the group for eight years.  Ana Baez came to Minnesota from Culiacán\, Mexico\, after 15 years of dancing professionally throughout Mexico while earning degrees in dance education\, choreography\, and traditional Mexican folk arts.  Kate Stuart has been teaching dance and music for many years\, and joined Ana seven years ago as the associate teacher for the group.\nTheatre piece featuring the ArtMakers College Apprentice Program\, featuring Skye Curtis\, Jaynee Purchase\, Andrew Rossow\, Jim Rossow\, Nora Serres\n \nArtMakers is a new arts organization born in Northfield to create an inclusive\, community-centered\, career arts day program for individuals of varying abilities. ArtMakers combines a Career Arts Group and a College Arts Apprentice Program to bring artists with disabilities together with students from the colleges and other artists from the community to create and share their work. \n“Over the Rainbow” is a story montage that blends works by Robert Munsch\, Maurice Sendak\, and L. Frank Baum with the music of Paul Williams\, Harold Arlen and Edgar Harburg\, and Steven Schwartz. ArtMakers is grateful to stand on the shoulders of such wonderful artists. \n\nDance piece\, “Three Little Birds” from Emma Hilson\nEmma Hilson is a 10 year old who is new to the MN Dance world has always enjoyed dancing\, whether by herself or in front of a group of others.  She has recently performed  in the Arts Access Chautauaua “Here I am” concert.\n Dance piece\, “Uptown Funk\,” performed by Michael Cohn (music by Bruno Mars)\nMichael Cohn was born in Iowa and raised in the Twin cities.  Originally he started dancing as a form of therapy and socialization in 2010 and found over time that he has learned techniques and skills that have broadened his scope of dance. He brings a slight twist with his dancing as he utilizes a walker and sometimes a dance wheelchair to help him move across the dance floor. Watch as Mike moves and shows how life can be free as we move with music!\n\nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.\n\n\nThe Artists Disabling Assumptions exhibition is sponsored by:\n\n

I Can Dance You Can Dance. \nBrian J. Evans is a Professional Performing Human. For the past eight years\, Evans has had the privilege and pleasure of engaging in a vast array of fields. Teaching in public and private institutions\, working with healthcare providers in the US and abroad\, performing as singer\, actor\, dancer in churches\, theaters\, basements\, outdoor stages\, any space provided that encourages the arts to thrive. An artist striving for social justice\, Evans places high value in process and product\, having had most of his training out in the ‘Arts field’ of the Twin Cities\, working with over 50 artistic directors on more than 200 projects from solo endeavors to collaborating as a self-employed professional performer & teaching artist. Primarily as a principle dancer and musical director for Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater\, Evans has continued to investigate the idea that connections exist between us all and it’s the responsibility of the Arts to rediscover those connections\, highlight them to allow us to feel holistically human. \nJ-Sun is a teacher and community leader in the Twin Cities; a competitor and an academic\, recipient of the 2013 Sage Award for Outstanding Performance and consultant for The Annual Groundbreaker Battle. A long-time CVRO member and resident of Northfield\, Stoltzfus teaches at the University of St. Thomas and United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. He is a graduate of one of the first Suzuki programs in the country\, the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City\, IA. The Mendelssohn Violin Concerto stands as a major work in the violin repertoire and an orchestral mainstay of the early Romantic era. \nThe orchestra will conclude with Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony\, premiered in Vienna after his death\, and\, for a finale\, his “March Militaire.” Schubert is popular not only among listeners but also among musicians\, for his very engaging compositional style.  All works for this concert were written in the early 1800s\, at the dawn of the “Romantic” era of music. \nBoth performances are open to the public and newcomers are always welcome! Patrons are encouraged to support the orchestra through suggested admission of $15 for adults\, $10 for students and seniors\, and nobody will turned away because of an inability to pay. DESCRIPTION:Join others at our partner organization\, the Northfield Senior Center\, for a great discussion on Creativity and Longevity led by Mary Logue. \nAs a writer and a fiber artist\, Mary Logue has become interested in the link between creating art and living a long and productive life.  To this end she has been studying a number of artists who have lived and worked into their nineties and longer.  In this talk she will read from some of her own work\, show some of her hooked rugs\, and talk about the role of creativity in making a full\, rich life.

DESCRIPTION:2015 marks the 25th Anniversary of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Join us for the final day of a  retrospective of this important moment by featuring artists with disabilities in all of its gallery spaces. \nArtists featured in the Main Gallery include painter Annie Young (Burnsville)\, painter Sherrie Grube (Burnsville)\, wood artist Paul J. Flick (Minneapolis)\, and literary artist Alison Bergblom Johnson. \nThe Up Gallery features the work of artists from Laura Baker Services and facilitated by Martin Thorsheim. \nAllina Medical Clinic showcases a photo essay documenting the work of the Guild’s Autism and the Arts program\, led by Laura Goodwin. Let’s see if we can get another NAG member to win this year! \n2016 NORTHFIELD LIVING TREASURE AWARD \nDO YOU HAVE A NOMINEE? \nThe Arts and Culture Commission invites Northfielders to submit the name of anyone whom they feel is worthy of being considered its 2016 Northfield Living Treasure. \nThe deadline for nominations is November 6\, 2015.  Nomination forms can be downloaded from http://www.ci.northfield.mn.us/DocumentCenter/View/1507 or picked up in hard copy here at the Guild. \nThe annual award honors an individual who has\, over a period of time\, made significant contributions to Northfield in\, through\, or on behalf of the arts and culture\, so as to enhance the reputation of the city and the quality of life of its citizens. \nNominees may be either a practitioner in one or more of the arts\, or an arts or cultural leader\, supporter\, or advocate.  The award is one of recognition and has no financial value. \nCriteria for nomination are adapted from the United Nations guidelines to countries\, states\, and cities who also offer such awards: \n\nThe nominee must be living and a Northfield area resident.\nThe nominee must have amassed a body of work that demonstrates consistency of excellence.\nThe nominee must be an inspiration to others.\nPersonal admirable attributes that the nominee may possess include: kindness\, courage\, wisdom\, grace\, authenticity\, humor\, humility\, respectfulness and generosity.\nThe nominee is encouraged to serve the community and share their expertise for a period of no less than twelve months from January 1 to December 31 during the year after receiving the award\, to the extent they are able.\n\nPrevious recipients of the award have been Ray Jacobson\, sculptor and visual artist; Myrna Johnson\, theatre director\, performer and arts-community leader; Cora Schultz\, Northfield Youth Choirs founder and leader; Paul Niemisto\, Vintage Band Festival founder and Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra founder and conductor; Patsy Dew\, photographer\, theatre artist\, NAG and Senior Center arts programming developer and mentor; and Dewayne and Theo Wee\, accomplished pianists\, music teachers\, and unstinting performers and accompanists for individuals and groups at more Northfield events than can be accounted for.
