SUMMARY:FREE Workshop: Writing as Excavation
DESCRIPTION:The Northfield Arts Guild hosts…\nWriting as Excavation\nTHIS WORKSHOP IS NOW FULL! To be added to the wait list\, please email Megan Proft at megan@northfieldartsguild.org . \nIn this free\, immersive workshop\, you’ll use generative exercises to unearth the stories within us that are awaiting disclosure and discovery. Exploring new imaginative terrain can be intimidating. Yet it is the writer’s task to peel back layers\, pursue deeper truths\, and see past the surface of the familiar. Using writing prompts that operate as invitations\, you’ll excavate past creative blocks\, find permission to articulate interior worlds\, and locate the heart of our stories in order to bring them to life. \n Please bring to class the following items:  \n\nSomething to write with or on: notebook\, pen\, laptop.\nA spirit of creativity\, a sense of openness\, and a willingness to explore new depths in your writing.\n\n The workshop will be guided in its work by the words of Gaston Bachelard: “When it comes to excavated ground\, dreams have no limit.” \n  \nThis workshop is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. Although free of charge for all participants\, donations ($10 suggested) are welcome and gratefully received. \n About Lara Palmqvist\n \nLara Palmqvist is the recipient of a 2019 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant and a 2019 Elizabeth George Foundation grant for emerging writers. She was a 2017-2018 Fiction Fellow in the Loft Literary Center Mentor Series. Her writing appears in platforms such as The Washington Post and Ploughshares.com\, and has additionally been honored with awards from the Kimmel-Harding-Nelson Center for the Arts\, Ox-Bow School of Art\, Marble House Project\, the Saari Residence in Finland\, the Sozopol Fiction Seminars in Bulgaria\, the Jerome Foundation\, the Kone Foundation\, and the U.S. Fulbright Commission\, through which she taught creative writing at the Ivan Franko National University and Chernivtsi National University in Ukraine. Learn more at www.larapalmqvist.com.

SUMMARY:FREE Workshop: Dance That Makes Music
DESCRIPTION:The Northfield Arts Guild hosts the Flying Foot Forum Workshop…\nDance That Makes Music\nIn this hands-on workshop\, students learn to stomp\, clap\, hit\, shout\, sing and slap\, making music while dancing\, by dancing. The class\, led by Joe Chvala\, begins with improvisations and exercises that teach some of the methods the Flying Foot Forum uses to create their dances. By the end of the workshop students have created a group percussive dance piece that is partly choreographed by the company and partly created by each of the members in the workshop. This is the ultimate Flying Foot Forum workshop. Dancers should wear comfortable clothes and hard soled shoes\, if possible. Ages 8 to adult. \nThis is a free workshop but registration is required! Please email Megan Proft at megan@northfieldartsguild.org by Oct. 22 to register. \nAbout Joe Chvala and Flying Foot Forum\nJoe Chvala has spent most of his adult life based in New York City\, Gothenburg\, Sweden\, and since 1990 Minneapolis. During this time he has worked as a director\, choreographer\, writer\, composer\, performer\, and teacher for opera companies\, experimental and nonexperimental theatres\, concert dance venues\, performing arts academies\, and universities. \nHis work\, noted for its breadth and its singular brand of creativity\, is inspired and informed by his unique combination of artistic skills and experiences. The range of his work has earned him such diverse titles as “Fred Astaire on acid” and “the Agnes Deville of tap.” \nAfter moving to the Twin Cities in 1990\, Joe worked with a variety of theater companies while developing his own choreographic dance/theater work for his company of percussive dancers\, the Flying Foot Forum. Since the premiere of their first full concert (May ’93)\, the Flying Foot Forum has been presented in a variety of venues around the world from Paris to New York City\, Jacob’s Pillow to England. \nJoe has received numerous choreographic and interdisciplinary fellowships and grants from such organizations as the National Endowment for the Arts\, The National Dance Project\, the Minnesota State Arts Board\, the Bush Foundation\, The McKnight Foundation\, The Jerome Foundation\, Intermedia Arts Minnesota and the Minnesota Dance Alliance\, as well as Ivey and Sage Awards for dance and theater. flyingfootforum.com

SUMMARY:Lend Me a Tenor Auditions
DESCRIPTION:Audition Announcement!\nThe Northfield Arts Guild and director Marc Robinson are hosting auditions for our winter production of Ken Ludwig’s Lend Me a Tenor!\nAudition dates are Thursday\, October 17th\, from 6-8pm and Saturday\, October 19th\, from 2-4pm\, with potential callbacks on Sunday\, October 20th\, from 4-6pm \nRehearsals will start after the holiday season\, with performances scheduled for February 14-16 and February 21-23\, 2020. \nPerformers of all genders\, abilities\, races\, ethnicities\, and experience levels are encouraged to audition. We look forward to meeting new performers and seeing familiar faces! \nAbout the show: \nSaunders\, the general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company\, is primed to welcome world-famous Tito Morelli\, known as Il Stupendo\, the greatest tenor of his generation\, to appear for one night only as Pagliacci. The star arrives late and\, through a hilarious series of mishaps\, is given a double dose of tranquilizers and passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant\, Max\, believe he’s dead. In a frantic attempt to salvage the evening\, Saunders persuades Max to get into Morelli’s Pagliacci costume and fool the audience into thinking he’s Il Stupendo. Max succeeds admirably\, but Morelli comes to and gets into his other costume\, ready to perform. Now two Pagliaccis are running around in costume and two women are head over heels\, each thinking she is with Il Stupendo. A sensation on Broadway and in London’s West End\, this madcap\, screwball comedy is guaranteed to leave audiences teary-eyed with laughter. \nCharacters \n\nHenry Saunders – The Cleveland Grand Opera’s general manager. Father to Maggie. A blowhard who often loses his temper at the slightest mishap.\nMax – Saunders’ long-suffering assistant\, who is forced to take Tito’s place.\nMaggie Saunders – Saunders’ daughter\, and Max’s girlfriend; she has great admiration for Tito.\nTito Merelli – The world’s most renowned opera tenor\, and notorious ladies man.\nMaria – Tito’s long-suffering wife\, with an “Italian temper”. Leaves Tito early in the play\, but ultimately returns to him. Loves Tito\, despite his philandering.\nDiana – The opera’s ingenue soprano\, who is “flinging her way” to the top. A seductive woman (and she knows it).\nJulia – Chairwoman of the Cleveland Opera Guild\, who considers herself a “grande dame.”\nThe Bellhop – A comic relief character who has an ongoing feud with Saunders. An obnoxious opera fan\, the Bellhop keeps showing up at the hotel suite at the wrong moment\, trying to get an autograph and a photo of Tito Merelli.\n\nActors will be asked to read in pairs and trios from the script which will be emailed ahead of time when an audition slot is confirmed. Memorization is not required. \nAny men interested in the roles of Max\, Tito Merelli\, or the Bellhop should also prepare a short operatic piece to sing a capella (any song sung operatically – if it’s Hotel California operatically\, that’s great!) \nTo sign-up for a half hour audition slot\, please email Performing Arts Manager Jared Zeigler at jared@northfieldartsguild.org \nQuestions can also be sent there. We look forward to seeing you!

SUMMARY:The Great Northfield Bank Robbery: A Love Story
DESCRIPTION:September 5\, 6\, and 7\, 2019\na World Premier\nduring Northfield’s Defeat of Jesse James Days\n\n  \nPerformances:\nThursday\, September 5\, 2019 at 7:30pm\nFriday\, September 6\, 2019 at 7:30pm\nSaturday\, September 7\, 2019 at 7:30pm\n \nIn 1900\, Jim and Cole Younger\, brothers from Missouri\, had spent nearly a quarter century in Stillwater penitentiary for the notorious raid on the First National Bank of Northfield. As a movement for their pardon grew\, a young reporter for the St. Paul Pioneer Press took an interest in the Youngers’ cause.  Alix J. Muller\, already distinguished in her journalism career at the tender age of 22\, followed her nose for news and went out to Stillwater to interview Jim Younger.  Alix came back with more than just a good story. She and Jim Younger began a mutual appreciation. After the famous bank robbers and killers were released\, the relationship between Alix and Jim turned into its own story — one that shocked the upper crust of St. Paul. The star-crossed romance between an ambitious young woman of high society and an ex-con more than twice her age is a story that seems like fiction — but it was once actual news. \nHow the play came about:\nBill McAuliffe was digging through files at the Minnesota HIstory Center\, researching some now-forgotten news story\, when he came across accounts of the tragic death of bank robber and killer Jim Younger. Younger had been in love with a St. Paul journalist less than half his age\, but of course it couldn’t work. “That’s a play\,” McAuliffe thought.  “Maybe I’ll write it when I retire.” Twenty-five years later\, on his way out the Star Tribune door on his final day\, McAuliffe stopped by the desk of colleague Graydon Royce\, the paper’s long-time drama and arts critic. Was there a play here\, McAuliffe wondered? As the saying goes\, you couldn’t make this stuff up. There was definitely a play there. And here it is.\n\nThe Playwrights:\nIn his 33 years as a reporter at the Minneapolis Star Tribune\, Bill McAuliffe covered politics\, crime\, weather and other obsessions of the day. He is also an award-winning travel writer and has written a wide range of children’s non fiction books. He is a bicyclist\, bread-baker\, undiscovered guitarist and grandfather of four. He lives in Minneapolis. \nGraydon Royce is a retired theater critic and fine arts writer with the Star Tribune. He won the 2016 Ivey Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Twin Cities theater community. He has been a fellow at both the O’Neill Critic’s Institute in New London\, Conn.\, and the NEA Classical Music Fellowship at Columbia University. He is also a playwright and actor. He most recently performed in “Holiday Inn” at Chanhassen Dinner Theatre. Royce currently serves as director of artistic ministry at Diamond Lake Lutheran Church in south Minneapolis. He has four children and eight grandchildren. \nDirected by Rachel Haider\n2018 Best of Southern MN Scene Winner for Best Director\nThroughout most of her life\, Rachel has studied\, taught\, and worked in theater arts and in arts promotion and management. Her extensive resume includes work with professional\, community and educational theaters.  She has taught in private and public schools and with numerous arts organizations.
