SUMMARY:"I Know I'm Home When..." Exhibition Opens
DESCRIPTION:I KNOW I’M HOME WHEN…\n\nAPRIL 15-MAY 15\, 2021\n\n\nWe held a live\, Virtual Artist Reception to celebrate the artists in the “I Know I’m Home When…” exhibition on Thursday\, April 29 from 6:30-7:30 pm. Attendees were able to ask questions of the artists\, and see a slideshow of artwork while hearing from participating artists. \nWATCH A RECORDING OF THE VIRTUAL RECEPTION \nQuestions? email heather@northfieldartsguild.org \n\nI Know I’m Home When…features artists with strong ties to Northfield whose work calls us to reflect on how we experience and envision our community.  Inspired by audio testimonies recorded by Cecilia Cornejo and her multiplatform project The Wandering House\, the exhibition harnesses the power of community to interrogate notions of belonging through a variety of media. \nAt the heart of the exhibition is a Community Quilt comprised of quotes gleaned from audio testimonies recorded by Northfield residents in 2019 through The Wandering House project. All the quotes respond to the prompt “I Know I’m Home When…” and were carefully embroidered by 60 community members—embroidery artists and enthusiasts alike—working in close collaboration with Cecilia Cornejo. The participants in this project met periodically over Zoom to exchange embroidery tips\, techniques\, and ideas and in so doing\, created a place of joy and connection at a time marked by isolation and uncertainty. \nI Know I’m Home When… also includes the work of artists working in painting\, photography\, time-based media\, artist books\, ceramics\, and prints. As a whole the show offers multiple points of entry for audiences to reflect and envision ways to create places where everyone feels heard\, seen\, and valued. \nFeatured regional artists: Allison Albright (painting)\, Cecilia Cornejo (social practice\, public art\, time-based media)\, Megan Dwyer (prints)\, Toni Easterson (artist books)\, Gail Gates (photography)\, Hannah Hamalian (time-based media)\, Thomas Hardy (painting)\, Riki Kölbl Nelson (painting)\, Joanna Manning (ceramics)\, Heriberto Rosas (photography and time-based media) and Ian Turnage-Butterbaugh (photography). \nThe Embroidery Project/Community Quilt participants: Connie Albers\, Molly Andrews\, Katie Arnold\, Louisa Ballinger\, Debra Beck\, Vanessa Bodrie\, Annie Boehm\, Laurel Bradley\, Cecilia Cornejo\, Suzanne Daehlin\, Patsy Dew\, Angelique Dietz\, Joan Ennis\, Kristina Felbeck\, Cortney Fischer\, Lucy Gonzáles Mirón\, Clarice Grenier Grabau\, Hannah Hamalian\, Patricia Johnson\, Margit Johnson\, Jessica Keating\, Brenda Keilen\, Alec Lavoi\, Heather Lawrenz\, Virginia Lorang\, Arielle Loy\, Diane Lyman\, Kellie Lyman\, Allie Lyman\, Natalia Marchan\, Kristal McNamara\, Amy Merritt\, MurphyKate Montee\, Ayaka Moriyama\, Gaby Muñoz\, Liora Newman\, Kate Niemisto\, Chely Og\, Jacque Oman Clinton\, Kristin Partlo\, Jessica Peterson White\, Wendy Placko\, Wanda Playter\, Mary Jean Roberts\, Lorraine Rovig\, Emily Scharf\, Jacyn Schmidt\, Anna Schumacher\, Lisa Sexton\, Yemi Shin\, Marja Steinberg\, Betty Suárez\, Jean Vick\, Jennifer Welbaum\, Candace Wilkinson\, Jennifer Williams Toth\, Erica Zweifel and Christof Zweifel + Cindy Starkey Robinson\, expert quilter. \n\nCecilia Cornejo is an inaugural recipient of the 2020 McKnight Fellowship for Community-Engaged Artists. Her work has been funded in part by the McKnight Foundation and by the Public Works Initiative at Carleton College. \nCecilia Cornejo is a fiscal year 2021 recipient of a Creative Support for Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. SUMMARY:Live from the Guild Theater featuring Andy Flory
DESCRIPTION:MAY 21\, 8:30 PM\nANDY FLORY\n\nAndrew Flory is a musicologist and musician from Northfield. He has played locally as a member of the Counterfactuals and leads the elusive trio Tower Soudan. When armed with a simple acoustic guitar or piano\, Flory offers a quirky but direct take on indie\, Americana and folk that lands somewhere near the intersection of Elliot Smith and John Denver. As an academic\, he is an expert on the music of Motown and the author of the top-selling history of rock textbook in the U.S.\, and is currently writing a book about Marvin Gaye. He is well-versed in Gaye’s catalog\, and has produced a number of historical reissues of material by the Motown legend. His day job is a professor post at Carleton College. Flory produces most of his own records and has also worked behind the desk for local groups like Sam Ryden and Matt Arthur and the Bratlanders. \nLive from the Guild Theater is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund. \n\nWATCH THE LIVE CONCERT\n\nDuring these challenging times\, your support has tremendous impact!  In celebration of this concert\, please consider a donation to the Northfield Arts Guild.
