SUMMARY:The Pirates of Penzance
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nSet sail with this classic comedy that boasts one of the most famous patter songs in musical theatre history. On the coast of Cornwall\, a band of tenderhearted pirates celebrates the coming of age of Frederic\, who was mistakenly apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday. Now\, Frederic has vowed to devote his life to the extermination of piracy – until a ludicrous leap year snag threatens to keep him apprenticed to the pirates for life! Throw in a bevy of beauties\, a brash Pirate King\, the delightfully stuffy Major-General Stanley and you’ve got an endearing evening of fun for the entire family.  Performances for this Northfield Arts Guild Theater production are held at Arcadia Charter School’s theater. \nProduction Support:

SUMMARY:"Of Brush and Lens" Exhibition Closes
DESCRIPTION:Of Brush and Lens\nPaintings by Rachel Egeberg and photographs by Michael Wetteland\nJuly 20 – August 19\, 2017\n   \nRachel Egeberg Artist Statement: \nThis show encompasses work I’ve made over the past two years. The earliest work is 2′ x 2′ foot masonite boards\, followed by the cut paper and acrylic on mat board\, and most recently the small works on mat board with graphite and acrylic. Several months passed between each body of work\, yet they all represent my interest in mark making\, color\, composition\, shape and movement through a space. \nThese paintings are about movement – the way that line and form traverse space.  They embody the energy and looseness with which I work.  I paint rapidly and instinctively\, keeping my eyes sharp and my brush strokes confident\, which in turn provides great freedom to play with the subtleties of color in an evolving composition.  This way of working requires trust.  Letting go.  Embracing the raw and “unfinished” and compelling all that builds up in the body to egress. \nThey are about finding and trusting in the flow of your life. Trusting in the darkness and the light. Experimenting with line and color and pace and movement and letting it all come together to create something that feels alive and expansive. A manifestation of the powerful creative force that is within each of us. \n   \nMichael Wetteland Artist Statement: \nThere is something elusive that touches and captivates me in the blossom’s detail\, the magnificence of a grand landscape\, or the minutiae of the forest floor. It is there in the fragrance of lilac\, the oblique light of an autumn afternoon\, or the wind moving through prairie grass. It is palpable yet eludes concept and description. \nExperienced\, I wish to express and share it with others. My endeavor to do so utilizes the medium of digital photography to capture the raw materials for an image. I do not use the medium to document an event or moment in time. I use it to capture a moment that will become the foundation for an image that will move beyond a photographic document. Creating the image\, that is to bring the raw digital file to completion\, I use the wonderful artistic tools the photographic medium offers today. \nMy intent is to create a bridge of light\, color\, and form between myself and the viewer. If I am successful the image becomes an invitation for the viewer to enter\, participate in\, and hopefully enjoy what the landscape has shared with me.\nExhibition Sponsors:\n\n \n \n2016-17 Gallery Season sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Gallery Exhibition Opens
DESCRIPTION:Take The Fork in the Road: Realism and Abstraction\nAn exhibition featuring Paintings by Julie Fakler\, Ceramic Installation by Lisa Truax\, and colored pencil drawings by Steven Watson.\nSeptember 28 – October 28\, 2017\n\nPlease join us for an Artist Reception on Friday\, September 29 from 7 – 9 pm\, with Artist Talks at 7:30 pm.  Refreshments will be served. \n     \nJulie Fakler paints on a gessoed hardboard with many thin watered down layers of acrylic paint. Her subjects are domesticated animals that include cats\, dogs\, and farm animals. This exhibition will feature the work created during her SEMAC grant project after visiting South East Minnesota farms to meet the farm animals and farmers. \n  \nLisa Truax says of her installation pieces in which she combines traditional ceramic materials and found natural materials: ”We think of nature as untouched and wild\, and not something controlled or created by humans. Through my work I attempt to create a sense of connection to nature in the viewer\, yet through the utilization of abstraction avoid direct connections to specific places.” \n  \nSteven Watson uses a familiar medium (colored pencil) in his work\, but takes an unconventional path in his exploration and execution of secular and spiritual themes.  His drawing technique\, described as “regimented rectangles” or simply “color-on\, color-off writing” expands on the already liberating notions of drawing – despite this regimentation. \n  \n  \n  \nExhibition Sponsors: \n    \n\nThis activity made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and culture heritage fund.   \n\n  \n  \n2017-18 Gallery Season sponsored by:

Since then\, he has shared the stage with the best artists\, including Belen Lopez\, Alfonso Losa\, Sergio Arranda\, Juan Ogalla\, María del Mar Moreno\, Antonio de la Malena\, Manuel de la Malena\, Mara Martinez\, Andrés Peña\, Pilar Ortega\,  Juan Carnona\, David Paniagua\, Juaniare\, Niñp de Los Reyes and Carmen Ledesma.  He has sung for the workshops of Israel Galván\, Angelita Gómez and Javier Latorre. \nIn 2010\, he moved to the United States and now works with many amazing artists such as Jason McGuire\, Yaelisa “Camino Flamencos”\, Carola Zertuche “Teatro Flamenco”\, Melissa Cruz\, and Cristina Hall.  Recently\, Jose was invited to be Antonio Carmona (Ketama)’s backup singer at the Nokia Theater for the Eva Longoria’s Foundation.  In 2014\, Jose had the honor to sing for the San Francisco Opera in “Giselle”.  Since 2014\, Jose has worked with the Aspen Ballet Juan Siddi Company with whom he toured in Hawaii and New Mexico\, and had the honor to perform at the Joyce Theater in New York City last Spring. \nAn incredible and traditional artist\, José Cortés Fernández surprises us now by taking a step forward in his conception of flamenco by making pure flamenco live alongside other genres. \n \n\n\n\n\nManuel Gutierrez Flamenco at El Cid restaurant los Angeles\n\n\n\n  \n\nLuis de La Tota (Palmero / hand-percussionist. Jerez de la Frontera\, Spain)\nBorn into one of the oldest Gypsy neighborhoods of Jerez de La Frontera\, El Barrio de Santiago\, on Flamenco’s most famous street\, La Calle Nueva\, Jose Luis Bermudez Peña aka Luis de La Tota\, takes his artistic name from his grandmother ‘La Tota’\, who has been an inspiration to him since his infancy. Luis carries with him a distinct humor\, grace\, and rhythmic charisma that started his career as a percussionist and festero at the tender age of 8. Where others spend decades studying and crafting their artistry\, Luis simply IS purity in the form of Flamenco. His proof is in his presence on stage and in person where he creates at the moment\, in every moment\, music that will have you laughing to tears or eyes tearing up until you smile once you have discovered that you could lose yourself inside the world of Luis de La Tota. \nAs a percussionist and palmero\, Luis currently tours with flamenco’s top artists such as Maria Del Mar Moreno\, Antonio Del Pipa\, Fernando de La Morena\, El Capullo\, and Diego Carrasco. He is the only holder of a license to teach flamenco rhythms given by the Flamenco Foundation of Spain in 1990. He is also the ‘official’ percussionist for Viernes Flamencos (Flamenco Fridays) in Jerez de la Frontera\, Spain.  As a Flamenco lyricist\, his verses (letras) have been sought after recorded by respected Spanish singers such as Antonio de la Malena (Album: Yo soy Asi\, Asi Soy Yo\, 1997). His work as a percussionist can be heard on CD’s such as Duende y Compas and Gitanos de Jerez to name a few. He currently lives in Boise Idaho where he is building a school\, Escuela de Ritmo that is dedicated to the art of Flamenco rhythms\, dance\, and guitar. In 2013\, Luis gathered his family members to perform as Familia Bermudez at the prestigious Switzerland festival\, Obwald Festival. He and Familia Bermudez were invited to return to Obwald Festival in 2015 where they filmed a documentary about Luis’s talented family. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nFiesta por Bulerias en El Sol\, La Sal\, El Son\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nThere will be another performance at Icehouse MPLS in Minneapolis on Sunday October 8 at 6:30 pm.  For more information about the performance in Minneapolis\, visithttps://www.icehousempls.com/events/2017/10/8/flamenco-sin-frontera

SUMMARY:Six Mile Grove: 411
DESCRIPTION:Part of our 2017-18 411 Music Concert Series\n\nPerformance: Saturday\, October 14\, 2018 at 7:30 pm \nVenue: Northfield Arts Guild Theater\, 411 Third Street W.\, Northfield \nSix Mile Grove is rooted in the energy of Americana Rock and the simplicity of Classic Country music: all delivered with Farmboy charm. \nTickets:  $25.00 General Admission   \n \n\nIt all started in the small town of Lyle\, MN (pop. 500) with a skid loader and a fence post\, when Six Mile Grove frontman Brandon Sampson was 7 years old. He injured his hand when helping his dad on the family farm. The physician recommended guitar playing for rehabilitation\, and a few weeks later\, Sampson came home from the music store with a new guitar. His younger brother Brian threw a fit\, and was appeased with a shiny drum set. And so the seeds of Six Mile Grove were planted. \nThe brothers spent years pounding away on their instruments in the kitchen of their great grandmother’s old house\, as well as singing in church with their mom\, an organist and devoted music lover. Soon Brian’s friend Barry\, from across the woods\, wanted to join the noise\, and so his years of piano lessons began paying off. The boys realized they would need a bass player\, put an ad in the paper\, and dug up Dezi Wallace from the “big city” of Austin\, MN\, who arrived courtesy of his mom\, as he did not yet have a driver’s license. \nFast forward 20 years\, and Six Mile Grove has a lot to be proud of. They have weathered the ever changing music scene as a primarily self-managed\, self-produced\, and self-recorded band. Their music has evolved accordingly\, as an organic\, honest voice that has not been tinkered with or tainted by the lure of record labels or flashy music producers. You’re sure to find influences of Minnesota music’s founding fathers; from Bob Dylan to the Jayhawks.  Six Mile Grove honors it’s roots\, but has also managed to forge it’s own sound and space on a stage without compromise.  In addition\, their friendship\, touring and recording with legendary Johnny Cash guitarist Bob Wootton\, has lended even more distinctly to their “good all-American boy” sound and style. \nSix Mile Grove is releasing it’s seventh album this Summer 2017.  In this album\, Sampson muses on the responsibilities of providing for a family\, keeping love alive\, and fighting for what’s right in the world. These themes resonate with all the members of the band\, as guys with day jobs\, wives and kids. You’ll hear the whines and growls in Nelson’s piano and lead guitar licks; the take-it-easy pace of Wallace’s bass\, the newly added color of John Wheeler’s steel guitar and the simple to furious tempos in Brian Sampson’s drums.\nAs Wootton states\, “There’s nothing fancy about them and they don’t try to be something they’re not. And that’s what I like about them.”
