SUMMARY:Grand Opening Reception & SEMAC Capstone Events
DESCRIPTION:Fine Craft Collective\nThe Fine Craft Collective is a seasonal cooperative show produced by Cathy Collison and Heather Lawrenz. The show featuring 25+ artisans is open every day from November 9 through December 24\, 2017 in the Main Gallery. \nMore information at finecraftcollective.com \n\n\n\nOpen 7 Days a Week! Nov. 9th – Dec. 24 2017 \nHours: Mon – Sat 10-6\, Sun  12-4 \nSpecial Events:\nGrand Opening Reception: Friday\, Nov. 10 from 6 – 9 pm\nWinter Walk Reception: Thursday\, December 7 from 5 – 9 pm\nHoliday Reception: Saturday\, December 16 from 10 am – 6 pm \n\n\n\n  \nSEMAC Capstone Events\nfeaturing Jill Ewald and Cathy Collison\nJill Ewald received an Established Artist grant from SEMAC for “Pathways There and Now”. From November 1 to December 31\, Jill will display the work she created during this grant project at the Arts Guild’s satellite gallery in the Allina Clinic in Northfield.  Every two weeks she will rotate in new work from the project. \nPlease join us for a Capstone and Presentation of her grant project on Friday\, November 10 at 7 pm in the upstairs Dance Studio at the Northfield Arts Guild Center for the Arts. \n          \n\nArtist Statement\nThe visual images I paint have to do with mapping. I strive to create work from different geological and psychological/emotional places\, work that is informed by movement between the then and here (between time and place). Within this framework\, I explore interior and exterior human connections—our connections to the self\, to others\, to the natural world. A trail\, indeed a map-like mark infuses my work with a grounding and gives it a conceptual time and place. \nAlthough I have addressed the issue of how to portray human interactions and connections that we often sense like palimpsests just under the skin\, for two decades\, the idea of exploring this part of humanity via pathways through landscapes\, seascapes\, and mindscapes is fairly new. It arose from a trip to northern Minnesota where I was surrounded by nature that in turn led me to read “The Old Ways\,” by Robert MacFarlane\, and to mapping my own walking\, then biking and sailing paths using GPS. \nThese works discuss light\, space\, color; they draw on the poetic nature of art. While most of them invoke the feeling of landscape space: broad and/or deep\, some are closer to the center of ourselves. In this body of work\, the pathways are defined with inks and thread. Feel free to wander them\, to bring your own curiosities\, memories\, and experiences to them\, and even perhaps to find your own destination. \n——————————- \nCathy Collison received an Advancing Artist grant from SEMAC for “Exploring Texture and Form in Glass”. From November 10 to December 24\, Cathy will display the work she created during this grant project as part of the Fine Craft Collective \nPlease join us for a Capstone and Presentation of her grant project on Friday\, November 10 at 7:30 pm in the Main Gallery at the Northfield Arts Guild Center for the Arts. \n         \nArtist Statement\nOrnaments are a traditional gift given from one generation to another and are often the only three-dimensional art that an individual or family collects and displays.  They are also a perfect small size in which to explore glass as an artistic medium. During this grant project\, I explored new modes of glass artistry through learning to work with a different type of glass (borosilicate)\, and expanded my repertoire of materials\, skills\, and techniques for glass work.My previous work\, both in beaded jewelry and in blown glass\, has been driven by color and pattern. During this project\, I expanded my technical skill set as well as my methods of artistic expression by using clear glass to create textural forms and not relying much on color and pattern to create beauty and interest. One challenge was to teach myself how to use a different type of glass than what I am used to working with. For making ornaments I have previously used “soft glass\,” but this would crack and loose its shape easily if I tried to manipulate the surface into spikes and other dimensional shapes. Through this project\, I expanded my knowledge and ability as a glass artist\, pushing my glass work further by creating new ornaments that explore texture and form.  This was an opportunity to expand the boundaries of glass ornaments and therefore expanding the boundaries of how the general public views art.\n\n\n\nThis activity made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and culture heritage fund.   \n\n  \n\n\n\n\nNorthfield Arts Guild Gallery:  304 Division St. S. SUMMARY:Give to the Max Day!
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your support of the Northfield Arts Guild!  Please consider a gift TODAY!\n \n10 Reasons to Support the Arts from www.AmericansfortheArts.org\n1. Arts promote true prosperity. The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us— fostering creativity\, goodness\, and beauty. The arts help us express our values\, build bridges between cultures\, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity\, religion\, or age. When times are tough\, art is salve for the ache.\n2. Arts improve academic performance. Students with an education rich in the arts have higher GPAs and standardized test scores\, and lower drop-out rates—benefits reaped by students regardless of socio-economic status. Students with 4 years of arts or music in high school average 100 points better on their SAT scores than students with just one-half year of arts or music.\n3. Arts strengthen the economy. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reports that the arts and culture sector represents 3.25 percent of the nation’s GDP—a larger share of the economy than tourism and agriculture. The nonprofit arts industry alone generates $135 billion in economic activity annually (spending by organizations and their audiences) that supports 4.1 million jobs and generates $22.3 billion in government revenue.\n4. Arts are good for local merchants. Attendees at nonprofit arts events spend $24.60 per person\, per event\, beyond the cost of admission on items such as meals\, parking\, and babysitters. Attendees who live outside the county in which the arts event takes place spend twice as much as their local counterparts ($39.96 vs. $17.42)—valuable revenue for local businesses and the community.\n5. Arts drive tourism. Arts travelers are ideal tourists\, staying longer and spending more to seek out authentic cultural experiences. The U.S. Department of Commerce reports that the percentage of international travelers including museum visits on their trip has grown steadily since 2003 (18 to 24 percent). The share attending concerts and theater performances has grown from 14 to 17 percent since 2003.\n6. Arts are an export industry. U.S. exports of arts goods (e.g.\, movies\, paintings\, jewelry) grew to $72 billion in 2011\, while imports were just $25 billion—a $47 billion arts trade surplus.\n7. Arts spark creativity and innovation. The Conference Board reports that creativity is among the top 5 applied skills sought by business leaders—with 72 percent saying creativity is of high importance when hiring. The biggest creativity indicator? A college arts degree. Their Ready to Innovate report concludes\, “The arts—music\, creative writing\, drawing\, dance—provide skills sought by employers of the 3rd millennium.” Nobel laureates in the sciences are 17 times more likely to be actively engaged in the arts than average scientists.\n8. Arts have social impact. University of Pennsylvania researchers have demonstrated that a high concentration of the arts in a city leads to higher civic engagement\, more social cohesion\, higher child welfare\, and lower poverty rates. A vibrant arts community ensures that young people are not left to be raised solely in a pop culture and tabloid marketplace.\n9. Arts improve healthcare. Nearly one-half of the nation’s healthcare institutions provide arts programming for patients\, families\, and even staff. 78 percent deliver these programs because of their healing benefits to patients—shorter hospital stays\, better pain management\, and less medication.\n10. Arts mean business. The Creative Industries are arts businesses that range from nonprofit museums\, symphonies\, and theaters to for-profit film\, architecture\, and design companies. A 2014 analysis of Dun & Bradstreet data counts 750\,453 businesses in the U.S. involved in the creation or distribution of the arts that employ 3.1 million people—representing 4.2 percent of all businesses and 2.2 percent of all employees\, respectively.

SUMMARY:Zeitgeist: "For the Birds"
DESCRIPTION:Kracum Performance Hall\, Weitz Center for Creativity\n“For the Birds”-Performed by Zeitgeist\, Victor Zupanc and Kevin Kling.\nSponsored by the Northfield Arts Guild and Arts @ Carleton\nSeating is free and open to the public: no tickets required. \n\n\n\n\n\nCo-written in 2010 by composer Victor Zupanc and humorist Kevin Kling\, For the Birds is a concert length work that\, on the surface\, seems to be about birds. It features a series of musical pieces extolling the nature of each particular bird (sparrows\, roosters\, woodpeckers\, Canadian geese\, hawks)\, drawing parallels with our own human nature. Interspersed between\, is insightful storytelling created by Kling reflecting on childhood memories\, immigration\, illness\, accidents\, and healing. However\, just below the surface (but discernible to those that look)\, For the Birds is a work about that part of our human nature that compels us to reach beyond ourselves for more —more opportunity for our family\, more money\, more fun\, more speed\, more knowledge\, more love. When all goes well\, we call that need aspiration. When it doesn’t\, and we plunge to the earth with melting wings\, we call it hubris. Through utterly delightful music and a worldview only Kevin Kling can provide\, For the Birds gives us the space to contemplate our nature\, laugh at ourselves\, and heal.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nZeitgeist’s For the Birds tour is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBack to calendar\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKevin Kling is a well-known playwright and storyteller\, best known for his popular commentaries on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. His storytelling stage shows like Tales from the Charred Underbelly of the Yule Log\, deliver hilarious\, often tender stories. Kling’s autobiographical tales are as enchanting as they are true to life: hopping freight trains\, getting hit by lightning\, performing his banned play in Czechoslovakia\, growing up in Minnesota\, and eating things before knowing what they are. \nKevin Kling describes his zodiac sign as “Minnesota with Iowa rising…” He grew up in Brooklyn Park and Maple Grove\, Minneapolis suburbs\, and graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in theater. His storytelling started when a friend from the now defunct Brass Tacks Theatre asked him to perform his stories. Since then\, he has been awarded numerous arts grants and fellowships. The National Endowment for the Arts\, The McKnight Foundation\, The Minnesota State Arts Board\, The Bush Foundation\, The Jerome Foundation and others have recognized Kling’s artistry.  In 2014 Mayor RT Rybak named Kling “Minneapolis Story Laureate”. \nKevin was born with a congenital birth defect — his left arm is about three-quarters the size of his right arm\, and his left hand has no wrist or thumb  In 2001 Kevin was in a motorcycle accident and suffered brachial plexus injury (BPI). The brachial plexus nerves in his right arm were pulled completely out of their sockets. Currently\, he has partial use of his left arm and cannot use his right arm at all. Kevin Kling continues to write plays and stories in a rigorous fashion\, and travels around the globe to numerous storytelling festivals\, residencies\, and has been invited to perform the acclaimed National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough\, TN for several years. Kevin has released a number of compact disc collections of his stories\, has published five books\, “The Dog Says How”\, “Holiday Inn”\,  “Big Little Brother”\, “Big Little Mother” and “On Stage with Kevin Kling.” His plays and adaptations have been performed around the world. He lives in Minneapolis. \n\nVictor Zupanc\, born in Canada\, began his musical career studying violin and piano at the age of six at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Victoria\, British Columbia. After receiving his Bachelor of Music Degree at the University of Victoria he earned his Masters Degree in Music Composition at University of California at San Diego in 1983. \nSince 1983 Mr. Zupanc has been involved in over 300 theatrical productions as composer\, musical director\, sound designer and performer. He has worked at some of the most respected theaters in the country including The La Jolla Playhouse\, San Diego Rep\, Missouri Rep\, The Kennedy Center\, Berkeley Rep\, The Brooklyn Academy of Music\, The Joyce Theater\, SITI Company\, Playwright’s Horizons\, The Acting Company and New Victory Theater; in Minneapolis\, The Guthrie Theater\, Theatre de la Jeune Lune\, The Jungle Theatre and The Mixed Blood Theater. His music has been heard abroad in China\, Japan\, South America\, Great Britain\, Spain\, France\, Australia\, New Zealand and Canada. Artists that Mr. Zupanc has worked with include Des McAnuff\, Robert Woodruff\, Ann Bogart\, Marion McClinton\, Nilo Cruz\, Graciela Daniele\, Kevin Kling\, Bill Irwin\, Stephen Sondheim\, Randy Newman and David Byrne. \nMr. Zupanc is a two time recipient of The Theater Critics Circle Award for his theater scores (A Man’s A Man\, director: Robert Woodruff and Nineteen Fifty One\, director: Ann Bogart) and was twice awarded with a Hollywood DramaLogue Award for his work\, most notably for the acclaimed New York production of Romulus Linney’s Holy Ghost! \nIn 1989 he accepted and still retains the position of Music Director/Composer at the Tony Award winning Children’s Theater Company of Minneapolis (CTC). At CTC\, Mr. Zupanc composes scores and conducts orchestras comprised of the finest professional musicians in the country. \nLauded for providing “a once-in-a-lifetime experience for adventurous concertgoers\,” Zeitgeist is a new music chamber ensemble comprised of two percussion\, piano and woodwinds. One of the longest established new music groups in the country\, Zeitgeist commissions and presents a wide variety of new music for audiences in the Twin Cities and on tour. Always eager to explore new artistic frontiers\, Zeitgeist collaborates with poets\, choreographers\, directors\, visual artists and sound artists of all types to create imaginative new work that challenges the boundaries of traditional chamber music. The members of Zeitgeist are: Heather Barringer\, percussion; Patti Cudd\, percussion; Pat O’Keefe\, woodwinds; Nicola Melville\, piano. \nZeitgeist has maintained a fierce dedication to the creation of new music for the past three decades\, commissioning more than 400 works and collaborating with emerging composers and some of the finest established composers of our time\, including Frederic Rzewski\, Terry Riley\, John Cage\, Pauline Oliveros\, Paul Dresher\, Mark Applebaum\, Arthur Kreiger\, Scott Lindroth\, Pamela Madsen\, Edie Hill\, Libby Larsen\, John Luther Adams\, Jin Hi Kim\, Mary Ellen Childs\, Martin Bresnick\, Harold Budd\, La Monte Young\, Guy Klucevsek\, and Chinary Ung. Zeitgeist’s upcoming commissioning projects include new works by Mary Ellen Childs\, Davu Seru\, Andrew Rindfleisch\, and Pamela Z. \nFurther\, Zeitgeist has earned an international reputation for superb craftsmanship\, virtuosic performance\, and an innovative approach to the presentation of contemporary music. Highlights include Sound Stage by Paul Dresher (2001)\, a music-theater work featuring Zeitgeist and a 17-foot high musical pendulum\, Walker Art Center premieres of Pine Eyes by Martin Bresnick (2006) and The Making of Americans by Anthony Gatto and Jay Scheib (2008)\, a 30th anniversary celebration (2008) Glancing Back/Charging Forward: 30 Years of Groundbreaking Musicfeaturing the world premieres of works by 30 Minnesota composers\, For the Birds (2010)\, an evening-length chamber suite with narration by composer Victor Zupanc and humorist Kevin Kling\, the premiere of Spiral XIV “Nimmitta” (2012) by Cambodian American composer Chinary Ung\, and Saint Paul Food Opera (2016)\, a dining and music collaboration between composer Ben Houge and five Saint Paul chefs. SUMMARY:Artist Reception @ Tandem Bagels
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an Artist Reception on Wednesday\, January 31 from 3:30 – 5 pm\nat Tandem Bagels.  Riki will have some additional paintings and prints on display; refreshments will be served. \n   \nA Few of My Favorite Things\nOctober 4\, 2017 – January 31\, 2018\nPaintings by Riki Kölbl Nelson\nArtist Statement\nI have been working as an artist for years\, taking and giving workshops and classes\, and exhibiting my work in personal and group shows here and abroad. \nOver the decades of making art I have explored a variety of themes and styles. For this exhibit I have  chosen a cross section: from micro close-ups of butterfly wings to memories of dresses. The unifying element is my interest in energy (élan vital\, chi) which underlies all things animate and inanimate and in good moments courses through my eye and hand. \nI have worked as artist in the schools and have given art lessons to students of all ages in my home/studio. I have taught in the Art Department and the Honor’s Program at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis\, also in the Split Rock Arts Program\, as well as in Elderhostels through St.Olaf College and in the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium. \nI have a long\, fruitful association with the Northfield Arts Guild and continue to teach a weekly art workshop at the Northfield Retirement Center\, open to its residents and to the wider community. \nRiki Kölbl Nelson \n  \nTandem Bagels  |  317 Division Street S.  |  Northfield\, MN 55057
