SUMMARY:Give to the Max Day!
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your support of the Northfield Arts Guild!  Please consider a gift TODAY!\n \n10 Reasons to Support the Arts from www.AmericansfortheArts.org\n1. Arts promote true prosperity. The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us— fostering creativity\, goodness\, and beauty. The arts help us express our values\, build bridges between cultures\, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity\, religion\, or age. When times are tough\, art is salve for the ache.\n2. Arts improve academic performance. Students with an education rich in the arts have higher GPAs and standardized test scores\, and lower drop-out rates—benefits reaped by students regardless of socio-economic status. Students with 4 years of arts or music in high school average 100 points better on their SAT scores than students with just one-half year of arts or music.\n3. Arts strengthen the economy. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reports that the arts and culture sector represents 3.25 percent of the nation’s GDP—a larger share of the economy than tourism and agriculture. The nonprofit arts industry alone generates $135 billion in economic activity annually (spending by organizations and their audiences) that supports 4.1 million jobs and generates $22.3 billion in government revenue.\n4. Arts are good for local merchants. Attendees at nonprofit arts events spend $24.60 per person\, per event\, beyond the cost of admission on items such as meals\, parking\, and babysitters. Attendees who live outside the county in which the arts event takes place spend twice as much as their local counterparts ($39.96 vs. $17.42)—valuable revenue for local businesses and the community.\n5. Arts drive tourism. Arts travelers are ideal tourists\, staying longer and spending more to seek out authentic cultural experiences. The U.S. Department of Commerce reports that the percentage of international travelers including museum visits on their trip has grown steadily since 2003 (18 to 24 percent). The share attending concerts and theater performances has grown from 14 to 17 percent since 2003.\n6. Arts are an export industry. U.S. exports of arts goods (e.g.\, movies\, paintings\, jewelry) grew to $72 billion in 2011\, while imports were just $25 billion—a $47 billion arts trade surplus.\n7. Arts spark creativity and innovation. The Conference Board reports that creativity is among the top 5 applied skills sought by business leaders—with 72 percent saying creativity is of high importance when hiring. The biggest creativity indicator? A college arts degree. Their Ready to Innovate report concludes\, “The arts—music\, creative writing\, drawing\, dance—provide skills sought by employers of the 3rd millennium.” Nobel laureates in the sciences are 17 times more likely to be actively engaged in the arts than average scientists.\n8. Arts have social impact. University of Pennsylvania researchers have demonstrated that a high concentration of the arts in a city leads to higher civic engagement\, more social cohesion\, higher child welfare\, and lower poverty rates. A vibrant arts community ensures that young people are not left to be raised solely in a pop culture and tabloid marketplace.\n9. Arts improve healthcare. Nearly one-half of the nation’s healthcare institutions provide arts programming for patients\, families\, and even staff. 78 percent deliver these programs because of their healing benefits to patients—shorter hospital stays\, better pain management\, and less medication.\n10. Arts mean business. The Creative Industries are arts businesses that range from nonprofit museums\, symphonies\, and theaters to for-profit film\, architecture\, and design companies. A 2014 analysis of Dun & Bradstreet data counts 750\,453 businesses in the U.S. involved in the creation or distribution of the arts that employ 3.1 million people—representing 4.2 percent of all businesses and 2.2 percent of all employees\, respectively.

SUMMARY:Storied Design exhibit opens
DESCRIPTION:Photographs by Timothy Schacker and The Jewell Wolk Quilt Project presented by Jean Wakely\nJanuary 5 – February 4\, 2017\nMeet the artists and learn more about their work at the Artist Reception on Friday\, January 6th from 6:30-9 pm. Light refreshments will be served. \nFrom 6:30-7:00 pm Jean Wakely will present the story of The Purple Sandwich Quilt  from The Jewell Wolk Quilt Project created by her mother\, Jewell Wolk. \nAt 7:30 pm  Artist Talks featuring Tim Schaker\, Jean Wakely and Barb Pendergrass \n  \nThe Jewell Wolk Quilt Project is a collection of 11 story quilts by Jewell Wolk (1924-2011) of Cut Bank\, Montana. The quilts depict a wide scope of topics from Jewell’s childhood memories\, her children’s lives\, women’s history and biblical storytelling. \nJewell was a student of life\, a teacher at heart\, and curious person about life. She found her quiliting passion after her seven children left home. She was a strong believer in the art form of storytelling\, which she felt was becoming lost in the multi-media age. \nAs Jewell entered her 80’s\, she was going blind. The object of her quilts is not perfection in art nor in stitch\, but in the story it depicts. Each quilt tells a story\, about 45 minutes in length. Her quilts have traveled extensively\, have been widely published and documented\, and have been used for many storytelling events.  Her daughter\, Jean is creating a booklet for each quilt\, and presents a portion of the collection in this exhibition. \nTim Schacker Artist Statement: \nI have always been interested in the design of a building as a statement about our culture and way of life. A stunning example of this is the entire city of Brazila\, Brazil where an entire city was designed to reflect the values and culture of a modern Brazil. The same can be said when local communities design and build a house of worship that reflects the religious values of the religion and the age and time in which it was built. \nThe photographs in this portfolio were taken in churches\, synagogues\, mosques\, and temples over the last 2 decades of my travels throughout the world. They share a common theme of reverence and faith to what I think ultimately is the same core value. When I was traveling with my family on the island of Santorini\, Greece our guide stood on the worn steps of the local church we were visiting and took the hand of my eldest son and placed it in the worn grooves of the banister leading up to the church entrance. He asked him to feel all of the stories\, all of the hope\, all of the grief\, and all of the joy of the people who had walked these steps before him into his church that had been built 500 years ago. He called it an almost perfect place. I didn’t think to ask why it was “almost” perfect but now believe that he wanted us to understand that how we interpret our faith and the way we live in that faith is through our own human eyes and imperfections. This body of work\, which continues to grow and evolve\, examines our houses of worship\, through a lens of when it was built and how it has served its faithful overtime. \n\n\n2016-17 Gallery Season Sponsor:\n \n\n\n\n\nExhibit Sponsor:

SUMMARY:411 Concert featuring Dave Simonett
DESCRIPTION:This concert is sold out.  A handful of $25.00 backless jumpseats may be available at the box office one hour prior to the concert. \nNow in its 5th season\, the 411 Concert Series features regional and nationally-recognized artists in the intimate venue of the Northfield Arts Guild Theater and offers a truly unique listening and viewing experience. Each concert opens with a local musician. \nSecond 411 Concert: Dave Simonett(of Trampled by Turtles)\nSaturday\, January 14 at 7:30 pm\n \nTrampled By Turtles formed in 2003 in Duluth\, Minnesota. From their beginnings on the Midwestern festival circuit\, they have reached new heights with each album. The release of 2012’s Stars And Satellites saw the band play to more fans than ever\, sell close to 100\,000 albums\, make their first national television appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman\, and have their first concert feature\, Live at First Avenue\, broadcast on Palladia. This year\, the band will once again headlined Red Rocks Amphitheatre in addition to holding their second annual Festival Palomino in the fall. \nLead songwriter Dave Simonett has been especially affected by change over the last few years. He relocated from Duluth to the city of Minneapolis. “When I lived in Duluth\, I think I took connection with uncivilized nature for granted. There\, I had to drive 20 minutes and I was in the middle of nowhere\, and I did this almost daily\,” says Simonett. “This was a very important ritual for me. Solitary time in a nearly untouched landscape is my version of church\, so I think there is a bit of loss of religion in a lot of my work these days. I’ve always been a little obsessed with our struggle to stay connected to our simple animal side\, the part of our nature that lived off the earth\, hunted live game\, worshipped trees and mountains. I believe a lot of sadness is caused by feeling disconnected with the rest of nature. A lot of what is instinctual for us is beaten down and frowned upon in modern society. It has to be confusing for the subconscious. \n  \n  \n2016-17 411 Concert Series sponsored by: \n \nBeverage sponsors: \n \nLodging sponsor: \n \nMedia Sponsor:

Jean Wakely leads guests through The Jewell Wolk Story Quilt Project\, a collection of 11 story quilts created over a period of 20 years by Jewell Wolk (1924-2011) of Cut Bank\, Montana. The quilts depict a wide scope of topics from Jewell’s childhood memories\, her children’s lives\, women’s history and biblical storytelling. Jewell left her quilts to her eldest daughter\, Jean\, who manages the project in Jewell’s honor. At each hour-long Lunch and Learn\, Jean will share Jewell’s artistic process and cover the stories included in one of her mother’s quilts\, including time for questions from attendees. Guests should bring a bag lunch. She was also an extraordinary artist and creative storyteller. Born in 1924 to a German sodbuster farmer\, Henry Otto Peterson and schoolmarm\, Mary Blyth Peterson\, Jewell was their third child of five.  Jewell attended country school and Cut Bank High School.  After high school\, she was a telephone operator for the Cut Bank party line system.  Jewell married Robert Walter Wolk and they raised seven children in Cut Bank.  She found her quilting passion after her seven children left home. She was a strong believer in the art form of storytelling\, which she felt was becoming lost in the multi-media age. \n  \nEach new quilt that Jewell made started with a question\, launching Jewell on a research adventure. It would take her one to three years to fully develop the theme of each quilt. \nAs Jewell entered her 80’s\, she was going blind\, and eventually had to pack away her fabric\, thread and needles and stop making her story quilts. The object of her quilts is not perfection in art nor in stitch\, but in the story it depicts. \n  \nEach quilt tells a story\, taking about 45 minutes to cover. Her quilts have traveled extensively\, have been widely published and documented\, and have been used for many storytelling events. Her daughter Jean is creating a booklet for each quilt\, and presents a portion of the collection in this Storied Design exhibition. \n  \n  \nJean Wakely \nJean’s storytelling with her mother’s quilts has taken her across the county to many quilter and museum programs. Jean is currently creating booklets documenting each of her mother’s quilts and the stories they tell.  To book Jean as a speaker\, to find out more information about the quilts\, visit www.StoryQuiltProject.com \n
