SUMMARY:Studio ARTour
DESCRIPTION:The Studio ARTour is a co-operative venture among a group of artists in the areas around Farmington\, Northfield\, and Faribault. We open our studios to the public on the third weekend in October (in 2017: Oct 20\, 21 & 22) and invite you to come out and see where and how we work. \nThis year we celebrate the 13th year we have put on the tour. It’s still getting bigger so we must be doing something right! This year features 22 studios and 38 artists. Most studios have several artists working in different media. The artists are glad to answer questions and provide information about the art. Some studios have demonstrations. \nThe range of work is amazing; weaving to welding\, glass to gemstones\, clay to carving – and paper in between. Whether you are a long-time collector\, or are just looking for something unique\, the studio tour is a perfect way to shop for fine art\, and best of all the tour is free! \nFor more information\, please visit the Studio ARTour website\, and check out the FAQs. But if we didn’t answer your question feel free to email us at studioartour@gmail.com \nThe Northfield Arts Guild is a proud sponsor and stop (Studio #20) on this studio tour!  Come by and see work by Melissa Henning\, Matt Leister\, Jessica Prill\, and Leanne Stremcha.

SUMMARY:Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an Artist Reception on Friday\, September 29 from 7 – 9 pm\, with Artist Talks at 7:30 pm.  Refreshments will be served.\nTake The Fork in the Road: Realism and Abstraction\nAn exhibition featuring Paintings by Julie Fakler\, Ceramic Installation by Lisa Truax\, and colored pencil drawings by Steven Watson.\n\nSeptember 28 – October 28\, 2017\n     \nJulie Fakler paints on a gessoed hardboard with many thin watered down layers of acrylic paint. Her subjects are domesticated animals that include cats\, dogs\, and farm animals. This exhibition will feature the work created during her SEMAC grant project after visiting South East Minnesota farms to meet the farm animals and farmers. \nLisa Truax says of her installation pieces in which she combines traditional ceramic materials and found natural materials: ”We think of nature as untouched and wild\, and not something controlled or created by humans. Through my work I attempt to create a sense of connection to nature in the viewer\, yet through the utilization of abstraction avoid direct connections to specific places.” \nSteven Watson uses a familiar medium (colored pencil) in his work\, but takes an unconventional path in his exploration and execution of secular and spiritual themes.  His drawing technique\, described as “regimented rectangles” or simply “color-on\, color-off writing” expands on the already liberating notions of drawing – despite this regimentation. \nExhibition Sponsors: \n    \n\nThis activity made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and culture heritage fund.   \n\n2017-18 Gallery Season sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Artist Conversation with Stephan Koplowitz
DESCRIPTION:Topic for September 28:\nSpecial Exhibition Opportunity for Visual Artists –\nCome learn how you can have work exhibited in The Northfield Experience\nYou asked for opportunities to grow as artists\, and we listened!\nThis conversation will feature an upcoming exhibition opportunity for 2D Visual Artists in The Northfield Experience. Veteran Director/Choreographer/Media Artist Stephan Koplowitz will create a site-specific\, immersive performance event in May 2018 using the town of Northfield\, Minnesota as its canvas and subject matter. Comprised of a series of inter-laced performances of theater\, dance\, visual installations\, and digital media\, this performance event will be inspired by the history\, architecture\, and unique community of Northfield. Koplowitz is excited to work and collaborate with St. Olaf and Carleton Colleges and the greater Northfield community where the spirit of history\, industry\, and scholarship still thrive. \nThe Northfield Experience will engage students\, alumni\, professors and Curriculum from both colleges\, in addition to members of specific Northfield institutions and businesses. It aims not only to create a unique artistic experience\, but to bring together several academic and public communities united towards the development and creation of this work. An intended outcome is that all involved parties will be more closely aligned and acquainted following this shared collaboration. \nStephan Koplowitz is internationally known for his work on the concert stage and for creating original site-specific multi-media works for architecturally significant sites. His site work aims to alter people’s perspectives of place\, site\, and scale\, all infused with a sense of the human condition. Since 1984 he has created 56 works and has been awarded 40 commissions. \nDuring this conversation attendees are encouraged to ask Stephan questions\, and find out how they can get involved in this exhibit. \nInterested in attending? Please reserve your seat by emailing heather@northfieldartsguild.org or calling (507) 645-8877. \nWatch Videos of Stephan’s site-specific work:\nCreating Site-Specific Dance performances\nRed Line Time Compilation \n__________________________________________________________ \nJoin us for our monthly Artist Conversations!  This is a time (every 4th Thursday from 6-8 pm) for emerging and professional artists to gather in a small group setting to discuss topics relevant to visual artists.  These gatherings are free and open to the public\, but as space is limited\, please reserve your seat by emailing heather@northfieldartsguild.org or calling (507) 645-8877. \nEach conversation will focus on one topic such as: \n\nHow to price your work\nHow to regularly show your work\nCreating a website for your work\nHow to create a cohesive body of work\nSocial Media for artists\nBookkeeping for artists\n\nHave a topic to suggest? Please email your idea to heather@northfieldartsguild.org

SUMMARY:Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION: \n\nPlease join us for an Artist Reception on Friday\, August 4 from 7 – 9 pm\, with Artist Talks at 7:30 pm.  Refreshments will be served. \n  \nOf Brush and Lens\nPaintings by Rachel Egeberg and photographs by Michael Wetteland\nJuly 20 – August 19\, 2017\n   \nRachel Egeberg Artist Statement: \nThis show encompasses work I’ve made over the past two years. The earliest work is 2′ x 2′ foot masonite boards\, followed by the cut paper and acrylic on mat board\, and most recently the small works on mat board with graphite and acrylic. Several months passed between each body of work\, yet they all represent my interest in mark making\, color\, composition\, shape and movement through a space. \nThese paintings are about movement – the way that line and form traverse space.  They embody the energy and looseness with which I work.  I paint rapidly and instinctively\, keeping my eyes sharp and my brush strokes confident\, which in turn provides great freedom to play with the subtleties of color in an evolving composition.  This way of working requires trust.  Letting go.  Embracing the raw and “unfinished” and compelling all that builds up in the body to egress. \nThey are about finding and trusting in the flow of your life. Trusting in the darkness and the light. Experimenting with line and color and pace and movement and letting it all come together to create something that feels alive and expansive. A manifestation of the powerful creative force that is within each of us. \n   \nMichael Wetteland Artist Statement: \nThere is something elusive that touches and captivates me in the blossom’s detail\, the magnificence of a grand landscape\, or the minutiae of the forest floor. It is there in the fragrance of lilac\, the oblique light of an autumn afternoon\, or the wind moving through prairie grass. It is palpable yet eludes concept and description. \nExperienced\, I wish to express and share it with others. My endeavor to do so utilizes the medium of digital photography to capture the raw materials for an image. I do not use the medium to document an event or moment in time. I use it to capture a moment that will become the foundation for an image that will move beyond a photographic document. Creating the image\, that is to bring the raw digital file to completion\, I use the wonderful artistic tools the photographic medium offers today. \nMy intent is to create a bridge of light\, color\, and form between myself and the viewer. If I am successful the image becomes an invitation for the viewer to enter\, participate in\, and hopefully enjoy what the landscape has shared with me. \nExhibition Sponsors:\n\n \n \n2016-17 Gallery Season sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Experiential Exhibition Opens
DESCRIPTION:Experiential\nFeaturing Roxanne Richards & Joy Davis Ripley\nJune 15 – July 15\, 2017\n\nPlease join us for an Artist Reception on Friday\, June 23 from 7 – 9 pm\, with Artist Talks at 7:30 pm.  Refreshments will be served.  This reception also features the SEMAC Capstone Event for Tintypes and Authenticiy by Terra LaChance. \n \nRoxanne Richards Artist Statement:\nI have read that being comfortable alone with one’s self is a great gift. During the past two years\, I have found myself alone for long periods of time. Although being alone is not something I would have chosen for myself\, life decided to give it to me anyway. I had to overcome seeing aloneness as a punishment or a burden so I could embrace the freedom that being alone can bring. My work explores how we think aloneness feels\, how aloneness feels and the opportunities aloneness brings. \nAs a colorist\, I find dry pastel the perfect medium to explore the depths of color since dry pastels are almost pure pigment. Isopropyl alcohol mixed with dry pastels allows me to both draw and paint with the pastels. This handling of the medium produces a very atmospheric and layered effect\, which conveys the ambiguity of my new normal. The figures move in and out of the picture plane confirming my uncertainty of what the future holds and conveys the loss and incertitude over what was but us no more. The one thing all of the figures possess is the desire to be comfortable again. \nRoxanne Richards Website \n \nJoy Davis Ripley Artist Statement:\nAfter my daughter was born prematurely in 2010 she experienced significant development delays. In an attempt to get distance on my own life during this time\, I picked up my camera and used the LCD display. I realized that my anxiety and fear for my daughter were greatly reduced as I lost myself in trying to defamiliarize the subjects in my viewfinder. I’m drawn to strong lines\, bursts of color\, and details that allow for fresh perspectives. As I continued to experience an increased sense of well-being from my photography\, I began wondering if mindfully integrating art into our daily lives could lead to a reprieve from our harried\, hurried lives. In the late fall of 2015\, I began creating designs from my fine-art photographs and transferring the results onto durable\, long-lasting textiles in environmentally-friendly processes. The result is eye-catching\, flattering ArtWear in performance-wear fabrics\, able to go straight from a strenuous hike to dinner and drinks. \nJoy Davis Ripley website \nExhibition Sponsor: \n\n\n2016-17 Gallery Season sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Artist Reception for Patsy Dew
DESCRIPTION:Days of Wine & Roses\, Beer & Blooms\nphotography by Patsy Dew\nApril 7-June 30\, 2017\nPlease join us for an artist reception on Thursday\, June 1 from 5:30-7 pm at F-Town Brewing\n22 4th Street NE\nFaribault\, MN 55021 \nArtist Statement\nPatsy Dew \nI play with my camera\, as if tasting visual candy.  Flowers intrigue me because of their beauty\, color and changing nature with time.  I find great beauty in wilting blooms.  I am a voyeur\, trying to catch significant moments without the subject’s awareness of The Photographer. \nThe camera is a marvelous tool for capturing moments\, for freezing time. I look for those images that show the symbolism of the moment: the fleeting nature of life in a small town\, or the eternal qualities of peaceful moments in a noisy metropolis.

SUMMARY:411 Concert Series: Peter Mayer
DESCRIPTION:Peter Mayer writes songs for a small planet—songs about interconnectedness and the human journey; about the beauty and mystery of the world. Whimsical\, humorous\, and profound\, his music breaks the boundaries of “folk”\, and transcends to a realm beyond the everyday love song\, to a place of wonder at the very fact of life itself. \nPeter began playing the guitar and writing songs when he was in high school. In college he studied theology and music\, and then spent two years in seminary. Afterward he took a part-time job as a church music director while performing at clubs and colleges\, and writing and recording his music. In 1995\, he quit his job and started performing full-time. Since then\, Peter has gradually gained a dedicated\, word-of-mouth following\, playing shows from Minnesota to Texas\, New England to California. He has ten albums to his credit\, and has sold over 80 thousand of them independently.\n \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n2016-17 411 Concert Series sponsored by: \n \nBeverage sponsors: \n \nLodging sponsor: \n \nMedia Sponsor:
