SUMMARY:Artist Reception @ Tandem Bagels
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an Artist Reception on Wednesday\, January 31 from 3:30 – 5 pm\nat Tandem Bagels.  Riki will have some additional paintings and prints on display; refreshments will be served. \n   \nA Few of My Favorite Things\nOctober 4\, 2017 – January 31\, 2018\nPaintings by Riki Kölbl Nelson\nArtist Statement\nI have been working as an artist for years\, taking and giving workshops and classes\, and exhibiting my work in personal and group shows here and abroad. \nOver the decades of making art I have explored a variety of themes and styles. For this exhibit I have  chosen a cross section: from micro close-ups of butterfly wings to memories of dresses. The unifying element is my interest in energy (élan vital\, chi) which underlies all things animate and inanimate and in good moments courses through my eye and hand. \nI have worked as artist in the schools and have given art lessons to students of all ages in my home/studio. I have taught in the Art Department and the Honor’s Program at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis\, also in the Split Rock Arts Program\, as well as in Elderhostels through St.Olaf College and in the Cannon Valley Elder Collegium. \nI have a long\, fruitful association with the Northfield Arts Guild and continue to teach a weekly art workshop at the Northfield Retirement Center\, open to its residents and to the wider community. \nRiki Kölbl Nelson \n  \nTandem Bagels  |  317 Division Street S.  |  Northfield\, MN 55057

SUMMARY:Give to the Max Day!
DESCRIPTION:Thank you for your support of the Northfield Arts Guild!  Please consider a gift TODAY!\n \n10 Reasons to Support the Arts from www.AmericansfortheArts.org\n1. Arts promote true prosperity. The arts are fundamental to our humanity. They ennoble and inspire us— fostering creativity\, goodness\, and beauty. The arts help us express our values\, build bridges between cultures\, and bring us together regardless of ethnicity\, religion\, or age. When times are tough\, art is salve for the ache.\n2. Arts improve academic performance. Students with an education rich in the arts have higher GPAs and standardized test scores\, and lower drop-out rates—benefits reaped by students regardless of socio-economic status. Students with 4 years of arts or music in high school average 100 points better on their SAT scores than students with just one-half year of arts or music.\n3. Arts strengthen the economy. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reports that the arts and culture sector represents 3.25 percent of the nation’s GDP—a larger share of the economy than tourism and agriculture. The nonprofit arts industry alone generates $135 billion in economic activity annually (spending by organizations and their audiences) that supports 4.1 million jobs and generates $22.3 billion in government revenue.\n4. Arts are good for local merchants. Attendees at nonprofit arts events spend $24.60 per person\, per event\, beyond the cost of admission on items such as meals\, parking\, and babysitters. Attendees who live outside the county in which the arts event takes place spend twice as much as their local counterparts ($39.96 vs. $17.42)—valuable revenue for local businesses and the community.\n5. Arts drive tourism. Arts travelers are ideal tourists\, staying longer and spending more to seek out authentic cultural experiences. The U.S. Department of Commerce reports that the percentage of international travelers including museum visits on their trip has grown steadily since 2003 (18 to 24 percent). The share attending concerts and theater performances has grown from 14 to 17 percent since 2003.\n6. Arts are an export industry. U.S. exports of arts goods (e.g.\, movies\, paintings\, jewelry) grew to $72 billion in 2011\, while imports were just $25 billion—a $47 billion arts trade surplus.\n7. Arts spark creativity and innovation. The Conference Board reports that creativity is among the top 5 applied skills sought by business leaders—with 72 percent saying creativity is of high importance when hiring. The biggest creativity indicator? A college arts degree. Their Ready to Innovate report concludes\, “The arts—music\, creative writing\, drawing\, dance—provide skills sought by employers of the 3rd millennium.” Nobel laureates in the sciences are 17 times more likely to be actively engaged in the arts than average scientists.\n8. Arts have social impact. University of Pennsylvania researchers have demonstrated that a high concentration of the arts in a city leads to higher civic engagement\, more social cohesion\, higher child welfare\, and lower poverty rates. A vibrant arts community ensures that young people are not left to be raised solely in a pop culture and tabloid marketplace.\n9. Arts improve healthcare. Nearly one-half of the nation’s healthcare institutions provide arts programming for patients\, families\, and even staff. 78 percent deliver these programs because of their healing benefits to patients—shorter hospital stays\, better pain management\, and less medication.\n10. Arts mean business. The Creative Industries are arts businesses that range from nonprofit museums\, symphonies\, and theaters to for-profit film\, architecture\, and design companies. A 2014 analysis of Dun & Bradstreet data counts 750\,453 businesses in the U.S. involved in the creation or distribution of the arts that employ 3.1 million people—representing 4.2 percent of all businesses and 2.2 percent of all employees\, respectively.

From November 1 to December 31\, Jill will display the work she created during this grant project at the Arts Guild’s satellite gallery in the Allina Clinic in Northfield.  Every two weeks she will rotate in new work from the project. \nPlease join us for a Capstone and Presentation of her grant project on Friday\, November 10 at 7 pm in the upstairs Dance Studio at the Northfield Arts Guild Center for the Arts. \n          \n\nArtist Statement\nThe visual images I paint have to do with mapping. I strive to create work from different geological and psychological/emotional places\, work that is informed by movement between the then and here (between time and place). Within this framework\, I explore interior and exterior human connections—our connections to the self\, to others\, to the natural world. A trail\, indeed a map-like mark infuses my work with a grounding and gives it a conceptual time and place. \nAlthough I have addressed the issue of how to portray human interactions and connections that we often sense like palimpsests just under the skin\, for two decades\, the idea of exploring this part of humanity via pathways through landscapes\, seascapes\, and mindscapes is fairly new. It arose from a trip to northern Minnesota where I was surrounded by nature that in turn led me to read “The Old Ways\,” by Robert MacFarlane\, and to mapping my own walking\, then biking and sailing paths using GPS. \nThese works discuss light\, space\, color; they draw on the poetic nature of art. While most of them invoke the feeling of landscape space: broad and/or deep\, some are closer to the center of ourselves. In this body of work\, the pathways are defined with inks and thread. Feel free to wander them\, to bring your own curiosities\, memories\, and experiences to them\, and even perhaps to find your own destination. \n——————————- \nCathy Collison received an Advancing Artist grant from SEMAC for “Exploring Texture and Form in Glass”. From November 10 to December 24\, Cathy will display the work she created during this grant project as part of the Fine Craft Collective \nPlease join us for a Capstone and Presentation of her grant project on Friday\, November 10 at 7:30 pm in the Main Gallery at the Northfield Arts Guild Center for the Arts. \n         \nArtist Statement\nOrnaments are a traditional gift given from one generation to another and are often the only three-dimensional art that an individual or family collects and displays.  They are also a perfect small size in which to explore glass as an artistic medium. During this grant project\, I explored new modes of glass artistry through learning to work with a different type of glass (borosilicate)\, and expanded my repertoire of materials\, skills\, and techniques for glass work.My previous work\, both in beaded jewelry and in blown glass\, has been driven by color and pattern. During this project\, I expanded my technical skill set as well as my methods of artistic expression by using clear glass to create textural forms and not relying much on color and pattern to create beauty and interest. One challenge was to teach myself how to use a different type of glass than what I am used to working with. For making ornaments I have previously used “soft glass\,” but this would crack and loose its shape easily if I tried to manipulate the surface into spikes and other dimensional shapes. Through this project\, I expanded my knowledge and ability as a glass artist\, pushing my glass work further by creating new ornaments that explore texture and form.  This was an opportunity to expand the boundaries of glass ornaments and therefore expanding the boundaries of how the general public views art.\n\n\n\nThis activity made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and culture heritage fund.   \n\n  \n\n\n\n\nNorthfield Arts Guild Gallery:  304 Division St. S. SUMMARY:Artist Reception @ FTown Brewing
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an artist reception on\nThursday\, Nov 2 from 5:30-7 pm atF-Town Brewing\n\nThe Northfield Arts Guild and The Paradise Center for the Arts are collaborating to exhibit local and regional artists’ artwork in Faribault’s F-Town Brewing Company. \n  \n \nDriven to Abstraction\nMixed Media work by Joyce Francis\nOct 4-Dec 31\, 2017\nArtist Statement\nJoyce Francis \nMY MANTRA:\n“TO INCREASE THE QUALITY OF THE DAY\, THAT IS THE HIGHEST OF ARTS”\n-HENRY DAVID THOREAU \nThis quotation has been my mantra since I first started studying calligraphy in the mid 1970s. I\ncame to realize that art is one of the most profound means to “increase the quality of the day.” \nTHIS I BELIEVE:\nI believe that everyone should own a little piece of original art that adds light to the day. A glance at the colors\, shapes\, textures and the many other aspects of a piece of art has the power to lift the spirit. \nMY MISSION:\nMy mission is to bring more color into your daily life. \nUPDATE:\nI am updating this mission statement on October 4\, 2017 and feel even more strongly that we need art and color in our lives. The current times are too often dark\, heavy\, confusing\, and depressing. Art offers a bit of color and light into these days. Art can channel and hold emotions that otherwise get stuck inside our heads. We strive digest and resolve obvious daily issues that confront us. But we also need to create and maintain joy in our lives. I believe even a little bit of art will feed that joy and encourage us along our way. \n_____________________________ \nJoyce is a calligrapher and paper artist living in Northfield\, Minnesota.  A maniac for color\, she has a lifetime love of paper\, ink\, and letters.  Over the years her work has expanded beyond calligraphy into development of a line of cards and prints featuring her paper batik artwork\, the “Northfield Fairies\,” Zentangle-inspired cards\, and cards using her current artwork. \nIn fall of 2012 Joyce initiated a major departure from calligraphy and Zentangle.  She began studying non-objective painting and drawing.  Joyce’s “Art for Small Spaces” series evolved out of daily experimentation which explored many different styles of painting and collage.  The works in this exhibit feature Joyce’s exploration of color and line.  The fun of sharing the art is a bonus added to her joy of creating it. \nF-Town Brewing  |  22 4th Street NE  |  Faribault\, MN 55021\n2017-18 Season Sponsor: \n \n

SUMMARY:Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an Artist Reception on Friday\, September 29 from 7 – 9 pm\, with Artist Talks at 7:30 pm.  Refreshments will be served.\nTake The Fork in the Road: Realism and Abstraction\nAn exhibition featuring Paintings by Julie Fakler\, Ceramic Installation by Lisa Truax\, and colored pencil drawings by Steven Watson.\n\nSeptember 28 – October 28\, 2017\n     \nJulie Fakler paints on a gessoed hardboard with many thin watered down layers of acrylic paint. Her subjects are domesticated animals that include cats\, dogs\, and farm animals. This exhibition will feature the work created during her SEMAC grant project after visiting South East Minnesota farms to meet the farm animals and farmers. \nLisa Truax says of her installation pieces in which she combines traditional ceramic materials and found natural materials: ”We think of nature as untouched and wild\, and not something controlled or created by humans. Through my work I attempt to create a sense of connection to nature in the viewer\, yet through the utilization of abstraction avoid direct connections to specific places.” \nSteven Watson uses a familiar medium (colored pencil) in his work\, but takes an unconventional path in his exploration and execution of secular and spiritual themes.  His drawing technique\, described as “regimented rectangles” or simply “color-on\, color-off writing” expands on the already liberating notions of drawing – despite this regimentation. \nExhibition Sponsors: \n    \n\nThis activity made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and culture heritage fund.   \n\n2017-18 Gallery Season sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Artist Reception
DESCRIPTION: \n\nPlease join us for an Artist Reception on Friday\, August 4 from 7 – 9 pm\, with Artist Talks at 7:30 pm.  Refreshments will be served. \n  \nOf Brush and Lens\nPaintings by Rachel Egeberg and photographs by Michael Wetteland\nJuly 20 – August 19\, 2017\n   \nRachel Egeberg Artist Statement: \nThis show encompasses work I’ve made over the past two years. The earliest work is 2′ x 2′ foot masonite boards\, followed by the cut paper and acrylic on mat board\, and most recently the small works on mat board with graphite and acrylic. Several months passed between each body of work\, yet they all represent my interest in mark making\, color\, composition\, shape and movement through a space. \nThese paintings are about movement – the way that line and form traverse space.  They embody the energy and looseness with which I work.  I paint rapidly and instinctively\, keeping my eyes sharp and my brush strokes confident\, which in turn provides great freedom to play with the subtleties of color in an evolving composition.  This way of working requires trust.  Letting go.  Embracing the raw and “unfinished” and compelling all that builds up in the body to egress. \nThey are about finding and trusting in the flow of your life. Trusting in the darkness and the light. Experimenting with line and color and pace and movement and letting it all come together to create something that feels alive and expansive. A manifestation of the powerful creative force that is within each of us. \n   \nMichael Wetteland Artist Statement: \nThere is something elusive that touches and captivates me in the blossom’s detail\, the magnificence of a grand landscape\, or the minutiae of the forest floor. It is there in the fragrance of lilac\, the oblique light of an autumn afternoon\, or the wind moving through prairie grass. It is palpable yet eludes concept and description. \nExperienced\, I wish to express and share it with others. My endeavor to do so utilizes the medium of digital photography to capture the raw materials for an image. I do not use the medium to document an event or moment in time. I use it to capture a moment that will become the foundation for an image that will move beyond a photographic document. Creating the image\, that is to bring the raw digital file to completion\, I use the wonderful artistic tools the photographic medium offers today. \nMy intent is to create a bridge of light\, color\, and form between myself and the viewer. If I am successful the image becomes an invitation for the viewer to enter\, participate in\, and hopefully enjoy what the landscape has shared with me. \nExhibition Sponsors:\n\n \n \n2016-17 Gallery Season sponsored by:
