SUMMARY:Reception for Krisi Lillie: Tiny Impressions
DESCRIPTION:Krisi Lillie: Tiny Impressions\nAugust 1 – August 31\, 2019\n \nIn the Guild Members Gallery. This exhibition features oil paintings by Krisi Lillie which explore the landscape of Southern Minnesota. \nArtist Statement:\nTiny Impressions reflects my interpretation of the natural beauty that surrounds us\, providing endless compositions to paint. I am especially intrigued by the moods of the clouds. My primary focus is to portray nature in a whimsical\, semi-abstract fashion as opposed to a more literal depiction. I reach this goal by selecting a creative color palette which I apply with a painting knife to generate movement\, texture\, and a modicum of whimsy. \n\nPlease join us for an Artist Reception on Friday\, August 2\, from 7 – 9 pm.  Refreshments will be served. \n  \n2018-19 Gallery Season sponsored by: \n\n\n\nTiny Impressions supported by:

SUMMARY:"Baggage" Capstone Event
DESCRIPTION:Baggage: Immigrants\n\nby Isabella Rose\nAugust 1-31\, 2019\nIsabella Rose’s solo exhibition is a snapshot of her long-term project featuring mixed media collages inside suitcases interpreting personal interviews. This series features the life stories of three immigrants. She received a SEMAC Emerging Artist grant for this project. \nSEMAC Capstone Event: Friday August 2\, 6:30 pm \n  \nRose’s art explores what makes people who they are\, the parts we hide and the parts we share. The parts of people that seem inconsequential interest her\, the parts that are not perfect or pretty\, but add up to make them whole. Through her art she wants to share these facets of people unprocessed and raw. Her desire is to create unease by revealing the beauty in the imperfect and broken. She hopes this unease leads to reflection\, connection\, and empathy. \nIsabella Rose was born and raised in Northfield\, MN and graduated from the Northfield ALC in 2018. She has worked with numerous Minnesota artists in Northfield and the Twin Cities and currently lives in St Paul. She will be attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the fall. \n  \n\n \n  \n  \n  \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2018-19 Gallery Season sponsored by:

SUMMARY:Fingerstyle Guitar Deluxe ft. Pat Donohue and Jerry Kosak
DESCRIPTION:  \nSaturday\, May 11\, 2019 at 7:30 pm\n$25.00\nVenue:  Northfield Arts Guild Theater\n411 Third Street W.\, Northfield\, MN \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \nGrammy award-winning finger-picker Pat Donohue’s devotion to acoustic guitar has made him an American standard\, as he echoes the tones of Robert Johnson\, Blind Blake\, Merle Travis or Muddy Waters. Chet Atkins called Pat one of the greatest fingerpickers in the world today; Leo Kottke called his playing “haunting.” https://www.patdonohue.com/ \n\nThe music and playing of Jerry Kosak has incorporated the structure and complexity of classical\, the soul and passion of the blues\, the happiness and drive of Americana\, and the groove and swing of R&B and jazz. His music has been described as a fusion of rhythmic drumming\, grooving bass lines\, and thoughtfully disjointed melodies\, producing “a great reflection of many different styles” according to Kevin Barnes of KBEM Jazz 88. http://jerrykosak.com/ \nView Concert Trailer \n  \n \nJerry Kosak is a fiscal year 2019 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board. SUMMARY:Capstone Event-Cell Persona: Incarceration's Impact on Black Lives
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an free Artist Talk (SEMAC Capstone Event) at 5 pm on Friday\, March 22\, where Paul will present on his grant project. Followed by a reception from 6-8 pm; refreshments will be served.\nCell Persona: Incarceration’s Impact on Black Lives\nby Paul Briggs\nMarch 21 – May 11\, 2019\n   \nArtist Statement\nBy addressing the impact of incarceration on black lives\, Cell Persona draws attention to an aspect of society that prevents the world from reaching Utopia and the “restless yearning for a more livable\, just\, and meaningful world.” Indeed\, Cell Persona is about the far psychological and civic reach of incarceration into the lives of persons and their families’ ability to participate in democratic life even after incarceration. The disenfranchisement of blacks due to incarceration is what Michelle Alexander explores in her book\, “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.” \nMy cells discover the fact that disproportionately black persons populate our prisons and the cell reaches beyond its interior. Again\, the exploration is two-fold in exploring the reach beyond the actual cell and the reach of incarceration beyond an individual’s prison sentence. The forms dramatize both the reach of incarceration but primarily my own personal\, emotional\, experience of working with families with incarnated loved ones. Under the present laws a literal felon label and a cell mentality becomes part of the life of freed persons and their families perpetually. \nPreceding the Artist Reception on Friday\, March 22\, Briggs will lead a Capstone Event at 5 pm discussing the ideas he explored in his grant project. \n  \n\nThis exhibition presented in conjunction with Claytopia\, National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Annual Conference\, March 27-30\, 2019\, Minneapolis\, MN. \n\n\n\n2018-19 Gallery Season sponsored by:\n\n\n\nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund.

The\nprogram is a partnership between the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota (PAM) and Springboard for the Arts\, with support from the Bush Foundation. The program explores the intersection of arts and culture\, downtown revitalization\, and historic preservation in eleven Minnesota Main Street communities over a four year period. \nMinnesota Main Street is an economic development program of PAM that uses a historic preservation based strategy to revitalize downtown districts in Greater Minnesota communities. The program works with communities long-term and provides training and resources\, including a Main Street Project Fund; to help community members revitalize their downtown. \nSpringboard for the Arts is a national leader in creative community development. Their approach is rooted in the principles of community organizing and focuses on a “lots of little” strategy that surfaces unrecognized leaders in communities\, builds public narratives from a multiplicity of perspectives and voices; and creates low-risk opportunities for collaboration. This equity-based model centers on the lives and experiences of the people in and of the place; values the relationships\, partnerships\, and creative capacity that artists and communities build together; and aims to build power and agency for individuals\, neighborhoods and communities. \nAbout the Northfield Downtown Development Corporation \nThe Northfield Downtown Development Corporation (NDDC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2000 to support\, strengthen\, and grow Northfield’s unique downtown district. It is made up of business owners\, buildings owners\, and engaged residents who value the role downtown plays in Northfield’s vibrancy. \nNorthfield\, Minnesota\, is a picturesque river town with a walkable downtown district along the scenic Cannon River. Northfield is home to St Olaf and Carleton Colleges\, and so is one of the upper Midwest’s best college towns. It is home to historic buildings\, a swirl of art and cultural activities\, state-of-the-art businesses\, a rich offering of hotels and restaurants\, and a sophisticated retail environment. \nThe program will help the NDDC to sustain a vibrant downtown by providing art and creative placemaking experiences that draw people to shop\, dine and connect in Downtown Northfield; enhancing the downtown’s aesthetics through the creativity of our local artists; and utilizing the arts as a springboard for improving diversity and inclusiveness in Downtown Northfield across all cultures. As the Designated MN Main Street organization\, the NDDC will coordinate the Artists on Main Street program in collaboration with the City of Northfield’s Arts & Culture Commission and the Northfield Arts Guild.
