SUMMARY:Post-show Discussion with Kari Halker-Saathoff
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a post-show discussion with Kari Halker-Saathoff on Sunday\, August 4 at the Guild Theater.\n     \nSpecial exhibition at the Guild Theater\nOdysseus and Penelope: The Long Journey showcases the work of Kari Halker-Saathoff\, who has always been fascinated with stories of adventure.  In creating her interpretation\, Kari fashioned images on ceramic vessels that represent Penelope’s remarkable story\, while her illustrations tell the story of Odysseus. For many\, even those who have not read Homer’s The Odyssey\, Odysseus’ adventures are part of our cultural knowledge. Given this familiarity\, Halker-Saathoff depicts his journey within the mythological time period while reimagining the timeless and transcendent story – a story that has stayed with her throughout the years. \nWhile many of the illustration titles are inspired by the text of The Odyssey\, in contrast\, the titles accompanying each of Penelope’s vessels are inspired by the Women’s March of 2017\, as well as current news stories.  Halker-Saathoff has purposely chosen to align Penelope’s heroic journey within the present context of female struggle and empowerment. Her ambition for this show is to illuminate the many parallels between the present and 650 B.C.E.

DESCRIPTION:Krisi Lillie: Tiny Impressions\nAugust 1 – August 31\, 2019\n \nIn the Guild Members Gallery. This exhibition features oil paintings by Krisi Lillie which explore the landscape of Southern Minnesota. \nArtist Statement:\nTiny Impressions reflects my interpretation of the natural beauty that surrounds us\, providing endless compositions to paint. I am especially intrigued by the moods of the clouds. My primary focus is to portray nature in a whimsical\, semi-abstract fashion as opposed to a more literal depiction. SUMMARY:"Baggage" Capstone Event
DESCRIPTION:Baggage: Immigrants\n\nby Isabella Rose\nAugust 1-31\, 2019\nIsabella Rose’s solo exhibition is a snapshot of her long-term project featuring mixed media collages inside suitcases interpreting personal interviews. This series features the life stories of three immigrants. She received a SEMAC Emerging Artist grant for this project. \nSEMAC Capstone Event: Friday August 2\, 6:30 pm \n  \nRose’s art explores what makes people who they are\, the parts we hide and the parts we share. The parts of people that seem inconsequential interest her\, the parts that are not perfect or pretty\, but add up to make them whole. Through her art she wants to share these facets of people unprocessed and raw. Her desire is to create unease by revealing the beauty in the imperfect and broken. She hopes this unease leads to reflection\, connection\, and empathy. \nIsabella Rose was born and raised in Northfield\, MN and graduated from the Northfield ALC in 2018. She has worked with numerous Minnesota artists in Northfield and the Twin Cities and currently lives in St Paul. She will be attending the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the fall. \n  \n\n \n  \n  \n  \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n2018-19 Gallery Season sponsored by:

During the evening\, nearly 30 area artists will continually create works in a variety of scale\, complexity and subject matter. Once an artist completes a drawing\, it is then hung on the wall for viewing\, and visitors can then purchase completed works of art for just $30 each. After intermission\, you’ll be treated to Kallman works in a variety of styles\, including jazz/pop/rock influenced music\, some of which have never been heard before. The final pieces will feature current high school age singers joined by alums from the last two decades. \n\n\n \n\n\nThe concert features Northfield connected musicians and is sponsored by the Northfield Arts Guild. Special artist and curator talks are scheduled at different location to help visitors plan their journey: \n5:30 (St. Olaf)\n6:15 (Carleton)\n7:00 (Guild)\n\nAdmission is free and all are welcome! \n  \n \nThe historic river town of Northfield is located just 40 miles south of the Twin Cities.  The community live up to its motto of “Cows\, Colleges and Contentment” by sharing its rich 150 year history with thousands of tourists each year\, supporting a rich and vibrant artist community\, and serving as the home to not just one\, but two acclaimed education institutions. \nInspired by the choice of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) to hold their 2019 conference in Minneapolis\, the Northfield Arts Guild\, Carleton College and St. Olaf College partnered to create thirteen unique exhibition of contemporary ceramic work. Falling under the general title of #claynorthfield\, each of these experiences celebrates creativity\, diversity\, and the important role art plays in our lives. This Northfield celebration of clay is truly unprecedented and designed for both visitors and our local community.  There are no admission fees and all are welcome!

DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an free Artist Talk (SEMAC Capstone Event) at 5 pm on Friday\, March 22\, where Paul will present on his grant project. Followed by a reception from 6-8 pm; refreshments will be served.\nCell Persona: Incarceration’s Impact on Black Lives\nby Paul Briggs\nMarch 21 – May 11\, 2019\n   \nArtist Statement\nBy addressing the impact of incarceration on black lives\, Cell Persona draws attention to an aspect of society that prevents the world from reaching Utopia and the “restless yearning for a more livable\, just\, and meaningful world.” Indeed\, Cell Persona is about the far psychological and civic reach of incarceration into the lives of persons and their families’ ability to participate in democratic life even after incarceration. The disenfranchisement of blacks due to incarceration is what Michelle Alexander explores in her book\, “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.” \nMy cells discover the fact that disproportionately black persons populate our prisons and the cell reaches beyond its interior. Again\, the exploration is two-fold in exploring the reach beyond the actual cell and the reach of incarceration beyond an individual’s prison sentence. The forms dramatize both the reach of incarceration but primarily my own personal\, emotional\, experience of working with families with incarnated loved ones. Under the present laws a literal felon label and a cell mentality becomes part of the life of freed persons and their families perpetually. \nPreceding the Artist Reception on Friday\, March 22\, Briggs will lead a Capstone Event at 5 pm discussing the ideas he explored in his grant project. \n  \n\nThis exhibition presented in conjunction with Claytopia\, National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) Annual Conference\, March 27-30\, 2019\, Minneapolis\, MN. \n\n\n\n2018-19 Gallery Season sponsored by:\n\n\n\nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts & cultural heritage fund.
