Minnesota has a tradition of top-quality choral performance and choral composition.  Building on the foundations laid by F. The Guild is pleased to host the Choral Arts Ensemble’s performance in Northfield. \nTickets for Choir Country are $15 for adults and $10.00 for seniors & students.  Tickets are available online at northfieldartsguild.org\, by calling 507.645.8877\, or at the Guild’s Center for the Arts\, 304 Division Street South\, Northfield. \nThis activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a Minnesota State Arts Board Operating Support grant\, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.\nFor more information please visit www.choralartsensemble.org

SUMMARY:We Are the Willows: Free Music Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Come join the musicians of We Are the Willows\, a 6-piece orchestral rock band out of Minneapolis\, to discuss the creation of their album PICTURE (PORTRAIT)\, based off of 350 letters sent between lead singer/songwriter Peter Miller’s grandparents during World War II. Their correspondence inspired Peter to explore themes of family\, separation\, life\, death\, and identity in a time of national and personal crisis. The songs communicate complex ideas delivered with pop-sensible charm. This workshop is free! Participants will explore their own family histories and discuss processes\, develop creative habits and practices\, and explore songwriting and storytelling together.\n\nRead more about the band at www.wearethewillows.com.

SUMMARY:411: The Cactus Blossoms
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, October 6\, 2018 at 7:30 pm\n$25.00\nSOLD OUT\n“the duo’s gorgeous harmonies and ageless sound spell out just the beginning for these brothers.”\n-All Things Considered\, NPR \n“The group is led by Minneapolis-based brothers Jack Torrey and Page Burkum\, who\, despite different last names\, put their genetically encoded harmonizing skills and reverence for musical history to good use on the collection of energetic toe-tappers and emotionally resonant ballads — which all seem filtered through David Lynch’s surrealist lens. There’s no getting around it: You’re Dreaming is pretty damn dreamy.”  – The Rolling Stone\n“It’s an honest\, unvarnished\, completely engaging style that is clearly retro but in no way musty. Take some rockabilly\, add some melancholy bluesy swoon\, waltz time C&W and peppy folk-pop  and mix with natural\, innocent\, fresh faced vocals that feel as if these guys have been singing together their whole lives…  music guaranteed to make your day better.”  – American Songwriter \nRead more about The Cactus Blossoms\nVenue:  Northfield Arts Guild Theater\n411 Third Street W.\, Northfield\, MN \nWith Opener \nCannon River Currents\nFolk duo Delia Kain and Helen Forsythe play a unique blend of old time and bluegrass music on their fiddles and banjos with sweet vocal harmonies.\n  \n Many Thanks to our 2018-19 411 Concert Series sponsors:\n   \n  \nand to The Cactus Blossom Concert Sponsor:\n\n\n

SUMMARY:411: Davina and The Vagabonds
DESCRIPTION:  \nSaturday\, January 12\, 2019 at 7:30 pm\n$25.00\nVenue:  Armory Square\n519 Division Street S.\, Northfield\, MN \nwith opening act:  Laura Caviani Trio\nListen to Laura’s 1/4/19 interview with ArtZany!  \nTHIS CONCERT IS SOLD OUT. \nTHANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT.\nFeaturing\nDavina Lozier – piano & vocals\nZack Lozier – trumpet & vocals\nSteve Rogness – trombone & vocals\nGeorge Marich/ Andrew “Dizzy” Gillespie – alternating drummers\nAndrew Foreman/Chris Bates/Liz Draper/Keith Yanes – alternating upright bass player \nAbout Davina and The Vagabonds\nSince exploding onto the scene in 2005\, Davina and the Vagabonds have grown from a down-and-dirty blues band into one of the most exciting acoustic ensembles on the international stage. This high-energy quintet has established itself with a stellar live show\, a professional look\, and good old-fashioned hard work.  In recent years they have performed in 45 states\, 2 Canadian provinces and 12 European countries. \nWith influences ranging from Fats Domino and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band to Aretha Franklin and Tom Waits\, the band draws from the last 100 years of American music\, and is converting audiences one show at a time. So much more than just a blues act\, DATV’s shows are filled with New Orleans charm\, Memphis soul swagger\, dark theatrical moments that evoke Kurt Weill\, and tender gospel passages. Davina’s voice and stage presence defy category in a different way. Davina has been compared to Etta James\, Amy Winehouse\, Janis Joplin\, Billie Holiday and Betty Boop\, but comparisons don’t suffice. Sowers is a true original. \nFor several years the band has been on the road more than they are home in the Twin Cities\, but when they are home\, they can be found at the Dakota! One of the keys to Davina’s success is the band’s irresistible live show; when the idea for a live record was presented\, the Dakota became the obvious choice to do it at. Davina and the Vagabonds’ latest record\, Nicollet and 10th\, was recorded over two nights in early 2015 here at the Dakota. Like its predecessors\, 2014’s Sunshine and 2011’s Black Cloud\, Nicollet and 10th is the latest chapter in Davina and the Vagabonds’ New Spin on an Old Sound mission! \nWhat Other People Have Been Saying… \n“She purrs and growls\, whispers and wails. Sweet and seductive one moment\, she’s in your face the next\, and then she makes you laugh. Her voice is a complex\, expressive\, flexible instrument made of sugar and grit.” – Pamela Espeland\, MinnPost \n“Davina Sowers is a one-of-a-kind performer whose singing… has a sassiness bearing some comparison to that of heart-thumping blues queens Ma Rainey and Ida Cox.” – Downbeat \n“There is a timeless quality about this band that sets them apart from the masses but\, perhaps more than anything else\, there is an honesty here that is refreshing beyond belief. This band loves what they do and they do it well.” – Bill Wilson\, Reflections in Blue \n“Two things remain consistent at all her shows though: her throaty but cushiony voice\, which has a sort of hard-mattress comfort to it that’s part Bonnie Raitt\, part Etta James and a little Amy Winehouse; and her band’s rollicking New Orleans flavor\, driven home by dueling horn players and a bayou-thick standup bass.” -Chris Riemenschneider\, Star Tribune \n“Davina Sowers’ classically trained right fingers shimmy down the piano keys and meet up with an insistent boogie-woogie bass. Then she reveals her other musical talent: a sassy\, salty\, sweet voice that’s childlike at the top\, husky at the bottom.”– NPR / Marc Silver 2011 “Song of The Day” Choice song  LipstickandChrome \n\n\n\n\n2018-19 411 Concert Series sponsors:\n\n\n\nConcert Sponsor:\n \n\nAdditional support by our Media Sponsor\,\nour Lodging Sponsor and our Beverage Sponsors\n

Registration for the workshops is free\, but attendees should RSVP at http://downtownnorthfield.org if they plan to attend. \nAbout the Artists on Main Street Initiative and Partners \nThe Northfield Downtown Development Corporation was awarded a $30\,000 grant through the Artists on Main Street community development initiative in Fall 2018. The\nprogram is a partnership between the Preservation Alliance of Minnesota (PAM) and Springboard for the Arts\, with support from the Bush Foundation. The program explores the intersection of arts and culture\, downtown revitalization\, and historic preservation in eleven Minnesota Main Street communities over a four year period. \nMinnesota Main Street is an economic development program of PAM that uses a historic preservation based strategy to revitalize downtown districts in Greater Minnesota communities. The program works with communities long-term and provides training and resources\, including a Main Street Project Fund; to help community members revitalize their downtown. \nSpringboard for the Arts is a national leader in creative community development. Their approach is rooted in the principles of community organizing and focuses on a “lots of little” strategy that surfaces unrecognized leaders in communities\, builds public narratives from a multiplicity of perspectives and voices; and creates low-risk opportunities for collaboration. This equity-based model centers on the lives and experiences of the people in and of the place; values the relationships\, partnerships\, and creative capacity that artists and communities build together; and aims to build power and agency for individuals\, neighborhoods and communities. \nAbout the Northfield Downtown Development Corporation \nThe Northfield Downtown Development Corporation (NDDC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2000 to support\, strengthen\, and grow Northfield’s unique downtown district. It is made up of business owners\, buildings owners\, and engaged residents who value the role downtown plays in Northfield’s vibrancy. \nNorthfield\, Minnesota\, is a picturesque river town with a walkable downtown district along the scenic Cannon River. Northfield is home to St Olaf and Carleton Colleges\, and so is one of the upper Midwest’s best college towns. It is home to historic buildings\, a swirl of art and cultural activities\, state-of-the-art businesses\, a rich offering of hotels and restaurants\, and a sophisticated retail environment. \nThe program will help the NDDC to sustain a vibrant downtown by providing art and creative placemaking experiences that draw people to shop\, dine and connect in Downtown Northfield; enhancing the downtown’s aesthetics through the creativity of our local artists; and utilizing the arts as a springboard for improving diversity and inclusiveness in Downtown Northfield across all cultures. As the Designated MN Main Street organization\, the NDDC will coordinate the Artists on Main Street program in collaboration with the City of Northfield’s Arts & Culture Commission and the Northfield Arts Guild.

SUMMARY:Fingerstyle Guitar Deluxe ft. Pat Donohue and Jerry Kosak
DESCRIPTION:  \nSaturday\, May 11\, 2019 at 7:30 pm\n$25.00\nVenue:  Northfield Arts Guild Theater\n411 Third Street W.\, Northfield\, MN \n \n  \n  \n  \n  \nGrammy award-winning finger-picker Pat Donohue’s devotion to acoustic guitar has made him an American standard\, as he echoes the tones of Robert Johnson\, Blind Blake\, Merle Travis or Muddy Waters. Chet Atkins called Pat one of the greatest fingerpickers in the world today; Leo Kottke called his playing “haunting.” https://www.patdonohue.com/ \n\nThe music and playing of Jerry Kosak has incorporated the structure and complexity of classical\, the soul and passion of the blues\, the happiness and drive of Americana\, and the groove and swing of R&B and jazz. His music has been described as a fusion of rhythmic drumming\, grooving bass lines\, and thoughtfully disjointed melodies\, producing “a great reflection of many different styles” according to Kevin Barnes of KBEM Jazz 88. http://jerrykosak.com/ \nView Concert Trailer \n  \n \nJerry Kosak is a fiscal year 2019 recipient of an Artist Initiative grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
