Meditative Watercolor Painting

NEW CLASS! Explore the wonderful world of watercolors in a relaxed setting focused on development of the artist. You’ll learn to paint with watercolors through a range of different styles, techniques and subject matter. Class will be a time of instruction as well as open studio time to work.

Drawing II

NEW CLASS! Build upon your drawing skills through instruction, exercises and thoughtful practice. This class is designed for those who feel comfortable with the basics of drawing and are looking to expand their skills in an encouraging and positive environment! Drawing II builds on the skills introduced in Drawing I.

Abstract Summer Nuno Felted Shawl

NEW CLASS! Nuno felting is a technique designed in the early 90s by an Australian artist and involves working wool into a sheer woven fabric. You will create your own silk shawl measuring 6′ x 2′ with an abstract merino wool design. Your original piece of wearable art will be light enough to be worn any time, or could be made into a piece of wall art. Materials for the class, including several colors of wool, a piece of black silk for the background, are provided for a $50 fee paid to the instructor. This fee also covers the use of a palm washboard and all other felting supplies. You should bring two or three bath towels and a large bag to carry your work home. If you would like any color silk other than black, please call the Guild at 507.645.8877 one week prior to class start. Some experience with felting is helpful, but not required.

NEW CLASS! Both paint and dance in this unique silk painting class! You’ll create wearable art with Anna Chance as you watch the paint colors flow while swinging your hips and tapping your toes. No painting experience is necessary – it’s almost like the scarves paint themselves! You’ll even try painting with two hands at once! This class is fool-proof painting and all about the experience and making memories. Finished pieces will be washed, steamed and available for pick up after the class ends.

Painting at Parkview

Part open studio, part instruction, part experimentation, this class will meet your individual needs based on your creative goals. Riki Kölbl Nelson, an artist and arts educator, has taught students aged 9 to 90. She provides exercises designed to stretch the skills and creativity of the participants. You’ll be part of a facilitated group, gaining feedback and encouragement to take your art making to the next level for both beginning and advanced students. You can choose your preferred medium to work in – watercolors, acrylic, oils, pastels, or color pencils – and purchase your own materials for the class. This class can also be helpful for those who wish to add artwork to their memoirs. Some materials for the students will be on hand at the first session. This class takes place at the Northfield Retirement Community’s Parkview Center, 910 Cannon Valley Dr W.

Mother-Daughter Silk Painting

Introduction to Spoon Carving

NEW CLASS! Starting from the ground up, you will learn about green wood-carving with a knife and hook knife to craft beautiful, functional spoons. This class will cover carving grips, safety and instruction for tool maintenance. Finishing techniques and personal touches will be presented for you to complete your custom made utensil. You will leave class with the basic knowledge to pursue the craft on your own! All level carvers are welcome. There will be a break for lunch—feel free to bring a bag lunch or to venture out to downtown restaurants! There is a $20 fee paid to the instructor for materials. Ages 16+.

Birch Bark Basket Weaving

NEW CLASS! In this one-day workshop, you will weave a small, durable and sturdy basket out of paper birch bark and be introduced to the beauty and intricacies of diagonal plaited weaving. You will also learn the history of birch bark weaving and the harvest, as well as how to process materials and finish baskets. There will be a break for lunch—feel free to bring a bag lunch or to venture out to downtown restaurants! There is a $40 fee paid to the instructor for materials and a tool kit for you to keep! Ages 16+.

Design Your Own Silk Scarf

Open Studios

Clay Open Studio

This open studio is for experienced ceramic artists to come in and work. There is no instructor present. Punch cards include one bisque and one glaze firing, and use of the glazes. A 25 lb. bag of clay is sold separately for $15/bag. Prior to coming to clay open studio, you must attend an orientation.

Printmaking Open Studio

Join us in an open studio setting where you can learn all about the process of printmaking and grow your skills. Work independently while having the expertise of supervised studio time with students of all abilities. As least some printmaking experience is recommended. Punch cards include inks and paper. Other supplies will be available for purchase. Choose the punch card that works best for you!

Classes for Special Needs

Creating Community Club

Creating Community Club (CCC) is an art club for young adults on the autism spectrum. Create art collaboratively and individually this summer with CCC! This program prioritizes social connections made through the arts while simultaneously providing opportunities to stretch artistic technique and provide an outlet for personal growth and creative expression. Participants are encouraged to be “group ready.” Ages 14+. Interested in volunteering with CCC? Email Bridget at bridget@northfieldartsguild.org.
