SOLOS

A monologue writing and performance festival

July 2020

In this time of physical distancing, SOLOS is a festival for anyone to participate from wherever they currently are. Between June 29 to July 10, writers (and anyone who may not yet know they’re a writer) are asked to submit original monologues. From these submissions, a review panel of Guild Theater committee members and community artists will curate a collection of at least 10 monologues to be performed and filmed remotely by local actors.

Specifics for writing and submitting are below. Writers are encouraged to dream as imaginatively as they’d like. Create any character, put them in any setting, and give them something to say (or make it a piece of only stage directions)! The sky’s the limit! In case you need a jumping off point to get you started, writing prompts will be posted throughout the submission period on the Guild Theater’s Facebook page.

Schedule

June 29: Submission form opens
June 29 – July 10: Writing prompts (should you choose to use them to jumpstart your imagination) will be posted periodically on the Northfield Arts Guild Theater’s Facebook page
July 10: Submission form closes
July 11 – July 16: Submission review period
July 17 – 30: Rehearsal and filming for actors
July 31: SOLOS Performance debuts online

Submission Specifications

  • Monologues should be written to be performed by one actor
  • Feel free to imagine wildly, but please remember that performers will be filming themselves from home
  • Dialogue/text may or may not be used (feel free to make a piece that doesn’t have any text!)
  • Pieces should be half-page to 2-pages in length (PDF preferred)
  • Format with 12-point font, standard margins, and double spaced
  • Please do not include your name or identifying information in the document itself
  • Authors should feel free to submit more than one monologue!
  • All submissions should be sent through the Google Form link below (if you do not have a Google account to submit through, please contact Jared at the bottom of this page)

Submission Agreements

By submitting a monologue, the author agrees to the following:

  • Author agrees that their monologue may or may not be performed, and authorizes use of it by the Guild and affiliated artists for the SOLOS festival
  • Monologues will be evaluated by blind submission with no names or identifying information attached
  • In virtual performance, author’s name and monologue title will be public
  • Author agrees that there will be no financial compensation to author for selection or performance
  • Author avows that the piece is their original work and no one else has a rights claim to it
  • Pieces will be performed by amateur actors volunteering their time and talent
  • Authors may indicate on the submission form if they would like to “sit in on” the rehearsal process with actors
