Due to ongoing uncertainty around public gatherings and the advance planning needed to stage a play, the Guild will not be presenting Billy Elliot the Musical this summer. More information can be found here.

Set during the 1980’s British miners’ strike, motherless, working-class Billy Elliot dreams of being a professional ballet dancer. However, his father and brother want nothing to do with the so-called “nonmasculine” art of dance, and Billy’s teacher resolves to give Billy secret dance lessons so that he can audition for the Royal Ballet school. The winner of 14 Tony, Olivier, and Drama Desk awards, including Best Musical, Book, and Original score, Billy Elliot the Musical is an exploration of how we can find our place and passions in an unbalanced world. The empowering music is by Elton John, with book and lyrics by Lee Hall, who wrote the original film screenplay of the same name. Directed by Dayna Railton.

“Stephen Daldry’s production is a model of fluidity and intelligence. He constantly reminds us that the special power of the musical is that it can express a lyrical idea through physical action. . . it is the kind of effect that can only be achieved in a musical.” – The Guardian

“Much of the power of “Billy Elliot” as an honest tear-jerker lies in its ability to give equal weight to the sweet dreams of terpsichorean flight and the sourness of a dream-denying reality, with the two elements locked in a vital and unending dialogue. . . “Billy Elliot” never doubts that it’s the sobriety that endures in life. Which makes those intoxicating, fleet-footed flashes of art, where leaden bodies fly and discord turns into harmony, all the more to be cherished.” – The New York Times

Dayna Railton is a freelance director in the Twin Cities, and founder and Artistic Director for The Play’s the Thing Productions. She has directed over 100+ plays, which include 32 musicals since 2008. Her most current show is Heathers the Musical, which performs in May at the Lakeville Area Arts Center.
